Hello Kevin,
Glad you are finding information and sharing it.
AMSAT does offer a publication specifically to assist the newcomer "Getting
Started With Amateur Satellites", available at the AMSAT store. It has
yearly updates and many years of input that cover most everything that those
new to satellites need to know.
It is offered at a reasonable price and AMSAT receives all the proceeds.

Is anyone else in Northern California having interference on the SATS
from PAVE/PAWS, particularly on the downlink for SO-50?
I notice some S3+ modulated noise blocking all weak signals. If I'm
lucky, I hear the Sats at S3, so the noise is really squashing at
least that Sat and others on passes to the north.

Gould,
Your book got me interested and gave me plenty of information I needed to on
the birds. It's well written and organized. And as you mention the price is
right and goes to support AMSAT.
I also recommend the Sattelite Handbook from the ARRL. A great follow up to
your intro.
I'll save Clint the chance to post about his most excellent site as well. He
got lots of good reference material, geared toward the ham just getting
started on the birds:

Hi Jake,
Oh, so THAT explains it! I heard you on SO-50 last night, called you
back a few times but it didn't seem like you ever heard me. No one
else was on the bird at the time -- my duplex downlink was full
quieting at the time so I knew I was making it in as well. I was
intrigued by your CM88 grid (same as mine) and wanted to know where
you were -- after the pass I looked you up, saw you were just south of
me, but couldn't find an email with which to contact you.
Anyway, you were solid into SO-50. I didn't hear any noise whatsoever
on the sat during the pass, but occasionally I hear a "popping" noise
about S3-S4 on the UHF bands either locally (Fairfield) or even as far
away as Mt Lassen when I go QRP-portable.
Best regards,
Dave KB5WIA / CM88

Hi Patrick,
You are the go-to guy for any Kenwood HT questions - have you owned/used all
of them??? ;-)
The toggling between VFOs was not as big of an issue for me (like you say,
small price for a full duplex HT), but the receiver seemed weak. I know I
commented a few weeks ago about the 8800 having a weak receiver, but I think
after using the G71As for so long, I got spoiled with the receiver in it.
The s-meter is also practically useless on the D7. You have to toggle back
and forth between bands to see it, and it also never goes above approx.
s3-s5, on a good pass. It makes it difficult, especially when a bird is
quiet, to tell if you are on it or not. You need to have keen ears to tell
whether you are listening to the carrier or noise.
I didn?t use the D7 for much satellite work before I went back to the G71A
for receive, so I probably need to try the full duplex again and give a more
accurate observation.

If someone is looking for a single HT for full-duplex satellite work, I
would
recommend the D7 despite having to switch VFOs for Doppler adjustments.
I have the TH-D72A, which works the same way as the TH-D7 regarding
the need to jump between the two VFOs to adjust the receiver. It's a small
nuisance, but a small price to pay for not having to deal with two radios
when working full-duplex on FM satellites. I've picked up a couple of old
D7s (one appears to be a TH-D7A(G), and the other may be an original
TH-D7A), that I hope to get new battery packs for and make a couple of
FM satellite stations when combined with Elk antennas.
Your TH-G71A is a good dual-band HT. Not capable of full-duplex operation,
but worked well for me using groups of memory channels for FM satellites.
The receiver was pretty good, and some would notice that I changed to a
different radio from my normal radios when I used that HT.

Hi Ron,
According to his QRZ page under the "detail" tab, he responds to direct
only - no eQSL or LoTW. I don't know how current that info is, so things
may have changed. I am planning on sending a request along with an SAE and
IRC to his Germany address, and we will see what happens.
I am forwarding this to the BB just in case someone else has heard
different.

Here is an article I saw about the US Army's recent Nanosat experiment.
Reading this I remembered how cool it was in 1990 when we hams enjoyed store
and forward email messaging with a global scope thanks to PacSat and LuSat.
It may have been simple and un-glamorous, especially in light of today's
internet and cel-a-phone capabilities - but it was certainly way ahead of
its' time. I'm glad the Army is getting on board with the cubesat vision,
I'm sure they can make good use of the capabilities...

Hello group, I need help interpreting the following VUCC rule.
For VUCC awards on 50 through 1296 MHz and Satellite, all contacts must be
made
from locations no more than 200 km
apart.
?
I'm I correct to interpret it to mean that all one's operating locations, QTH
and portable,?must be within 200 km of each other on QSO's submitted for this
award?
?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Not exactly Until the past 3 months, I have not owned any
Kenwood gear since the mid-90s. The G71 was my ex-wife's
HT, and I used it for some satellite work a few years back. A
nice radio. I've bought two new Kenwood HTs since November,
a TH-F6A I use for my SSB work and the TH-D72A I've written
about here. Good radios.

I haven't tried out the D7's I picked up recently. I need to get
new battery packs for them, and then I can try to work the
satellites with them. Pair the D7's up with an Elk antenna, and
I'll have two stations ready to go for FM satellites. And ready
to be left somewhere, for someone else to use...

For most FM satellite work, the S-meter is an amusement at
most. You're working based on what you hear, since the
downlinks are generally weak. If you hear the ISS, the S-meter
may be pegged due to that downlink's strength.

Give it another try, and don't worry about S-meter readings.
Most of the time on any of my radios, I see no movement on
the FM passes. On SSB, that can be very different.

Again, this is an area in which I was spoiled by the G71A. On a typical
AO27, HO68 and SO50 pass the s-meter generally peaks S5-S7, and on an AO51
pass (with it running over a watt), it is almost always S7-S9. With the ISS
it is obviously S9.
Time to pull the D7 out and give it another try.

might be wrong? Are there places to have them fixed if I can't shoot the
bug? Thanks. Bill K3SV

Hi,
Reminder - I will be at the EN90/EM99 grid boundary tomorrow for the
following passes:
AO27 1952z 21* (west)
AO51 2011z 20* (east)
AO51 2149z 47* (west)
I will be operating from the same spot I did last time.
You can track me via APRS here - http://aprs.fi/kd8ksn-9 The D7 will be off
during passes.
I will QSL everyone in the log, so no need for requests/SASEs.

Change of plans.....
Instead of working 2 eastern passes and only one western pass, I thought I
would switch it around. Here are the corrected pass/times:
AO27 - 1952z (favors west)
AO51 - 2012z (favors east)
AO51 - 2149z (favors west)
I will only be running 5w as usual, so please have patience, especially if
the activity on the birds is anything like it has been the past month.

Subject: [amsat-bb] KD8KSN/8 EN90/EM99 Next Saturday (29th)
Hi All,
Due to the fact that several stations that wanted either EN90 or EM99 or
both did not get to work me last time since I went during the week, I have
decided to make another trip out to the boundary next Saturday (29th) from
about 1800z ? 2030z. I plan to be on the following passes from this
boundary:
AO27 ? 1817z
AO27 ? 1952z
AO51 ? 2012z
This trip will be a little shorter than last time, but passes should be a
little more productive since it will be on a weekend.
I will have the D7 beaconing in between passes - http://aprs.fi/kd8ksn-9 I
will only be running 5w, or 6-7w if it is plugged into the vehicle, so I may
not be on the internet depending on were I am in relation to a digi.
I will QSL everyone in the log as I did last time, so no need for a return
card/SASE.
I will post a reminder as the time gets closer.
73!

Bill,
Start by checking the connections in the shack at the controller. If they
are good, then disconnect lines 1, 2, and 3 on the elevation side and check
the _cables_ with an ohm meter. You should read 500 ohms between 1 and 3,
and something intermediate between 1 and 2, and between 2 and 3. If the
antenna is parked, one of them will be close to 0 ohms, and the other almost
500 ohms, so it is better to point the antenna at 45 degrees or so. You can
see a clear difference, and eliminate a shorted or open line. If this
checks good, then the problem is inside the controller.
If you don't, then you either have a bad connection in the cable or
connector at the rotator, or the reference potentiometer is bad in the
rotator. The easiest way to check this is to swap the connectors at the
rotators. The systems are electrically identical. If the problem follows
the connectors, there is a problem in the cable or connector. If not, it is
in the rotator.
Fixing the rotator pot is messy but straight forward, requiring only
mechanical skills, and there have been several reports on how to do that.
Fixing the controller depends on what is wrong. In either case, Yaesu will
repair them for a "modest" fee.
Let us know what you find.
Alan
