I would be interested first in hearing what Bruce, KK5DO, thinks of
this idea, since he has the experience in both ARRL and AMSAT awards.
My initial concern is that this idea arrived in response to the LOTW
price schedule, which appears to have caused some sticker shock. That
is, it seems to have been conceived as a less expensive means of
achieving these awards.
Put more broadly, I'm not sure that the rate schedule of one
not-for-profit organization is a good reason to shift a task over to
another not-for-profit organization. These are not for-profit
businesses, who, in a capitalist model, should be encouraged to offer
the same service for better rates than their competition. Most of this
labour is volunteer in nature, and might be rather unsatisfying if it
were performed merely for the sake of a slightly better deal. Finally,
while some unique awards program obviously fulfills the part of the
AMSAT mission statement that reads "promote the training and
development of skilled satellite and ground system designers and
operators," I can't see how a duplicate WAS or VUCC program really
does so, especially since the years of experience with the ARRL awards
does not suggest, by the number of recipients, that they have been a
driving force in training these operators and designers.

I have been a league member since 1972,and am on the verge of not being
that.I see no justification for the monies that have been passed on to the
members on a lot of things. I dub it poor management on their part.We seem
to be getting less and less provided for us. Things that used to be free. I
do all the awards, collect cards for all of them. For my own satisfaction. I
will not pay those exorbitant fees ! Fixed incomes don't allow for such
extravaganza's and I think it hurts all way round. As far as previous
explanations,? you can put lipstick and a dress on a pig, its still a pig!
My 2 cents worth.

I have been reading about the upcoming Arissat-1 mission and have found lots
of good information. However, I have been unable to find any links to the
bpsk-1000 software that will be used for telemetry. All of the articles I
have read say that the software will be available before the suit is
deployed. But if I read correctly, this is coming up fairly soon. Any info

Hi Gary!

I have seen the same call from multiple grids in my LOTW QSLs.
Some of them have been selected by LOTW as the QSL for those
grids, and others are visible when I use the query tool to look for
QSOs or QSLs with specific stations.
I set up a "VUCC account" in LOTW, covering my activity from in and
around Phoenix within the 200km limitation. That rule shows me with
90 grids confirmed. Of those, here are calls that LOTW is showing
QSLs from multiple grids in that 90:
KD6PAG (9 grids from John in 2006-2008)
XE2RV (3 grids, when he lived in DL55)
W6GMT (3 from Brock, in 3 different states)
WC7V (3 grids)
XE2YBG (a couple of grids in northeastern Mexico)
AA5CK (a couple of grids)
I am not seeing a few others that I thought would be uploaded. I will
need to go back and confirm how the callsigns were put in the QSO
records from the other stations.

I agree with Jack and Tim, LOTW is great (albeit more complicated than it
needs to be).
For those who do not like the fees and complexities of LOTW, I'd like to
remind everyone of eQSL, which is a cheaper and simpler supplement to LOTW.
It's simpler because most logging programs will automatically upload your
QSOs to eQSL, you don't have to do a thing. It's cheaper because it's free.
The eQSLs are not valid for ARRL awards, but they are valid for CQ Magazine
awards and for eQSLs own awards.
The eGrid Sat award may be particularly interesting to those on this list.
It requires 75 confirmed grids for the basic award. The certificate is free
to download, or you can get a nice plaque, if you are willing to pay $85 for
it.
I use and recommend both eQSL and LOTW.

Hello Vince and BB,
Thanks for your interest.
We have working software to demodulate and decode the BPSK-1000 signal for
both the PC and Mac. We got a live stream of realtime data running over the
Internet last weekend.
The developers are refining the software and we expect to make this
available soon.

It isn't just LOTW price shock, it is also paper QSL price shock, as the
price for using QSLs for a VUCC award or endorsement is outrageous.
$40 or so for a basic 100 grid satellite VUCC? And we want to get new hams
interested in the grid hunt?

Hi Merle:
Actually, the VUCC fees are more close to what it costs to process an
application.
Most don't realize that for an average DXCC application (+/- 100 cards) the
cost is about $40.
VUCC, like DXCC, involves manual data entry just like DXCC and the time to
process is costly and time-consuming.
You'll notice that LoTW VUCC processing is less than the manual processing.
Using LoTW is what we would like to
see as it is less costly and no manual data entry by staff is required.
I believe this is the first ever price adjustment for VUCC since the start
of the program in 1983.
Had we done it gradually over the years it may have been easier to deal
with. We discussed this for some time before we made the change. The fees
are not meant to make money or break even. All the fees ever do is minimize
losses, just like DXCC.

Here is another question I am unclear about. If I want to get endorsements
for 2 VUCCs like 6m and satellite in a single card mailing, I do have to pay
the submission fee twice-once for each VUCC, or does the $7 fee cover the
whole bunch of cards and how ever many endorsements go with them?

Hello John,
There is current information about ARISSat on the front page of the AMSAT
Web site. We will use the AMSAT Web site as well as weekly ANS bulletins to
release information about ARISSat during the next three weeks.
Launch to the ISS 28 Jan 2011
EVA to deploy ARISSat on 16 Feb 2011. The transmitter will turn on 15
minutes after the safety switches are activated. The procedure is to
activate the safety switches then push the satellite away from the ISS.

One other organization that I can think of has already done this for WAS,
DXCC, and maybe other awards, I can't remember them all right off-hand.
MARAC, the Mobile Amateur Radio Awards Club (I think!) has
a mobile WAS, and Mobile DX award. The DX award is given in steps
of less than 100 countries. They're nice award certificates, the cost
is
reasonable. Maybe their process would be a good example for AMSAT to
follow?

Hi Gordon,
I don't recall that when I signed up. Unless they changed the setup or it's
"different" for DX stations, I'm not certain. So basically, they are
looking for a copy of your license, which has your address on it and say an
envelope with your telephone, electric bill or some form of "official"
business entity that can be cross referenced to confirm you and your QTH.
73,
Jeff WB3JFS
