is there an easy way to do this short of programming the up and down link
frequencies into
separate memory channels? in other words can the radio handle a split that

channel?

Because AO-51 is the most reliable satellite in terms of actually
finding and working it. SO-50 seems to be almost impossible to lift,
and the linear transponder ones require extremely expensive radios. You
can work AO-51 with an el-cheapo dual-band handie and a homebrew
antenna, and you can work /P really easily because you don't need a
rotator or satellite tracking software.
I'm not going to rush out and buy a VHF/UHF SSB rig just to work the odd
pass, especially since I've never heard anyone on the linear birds. I
don't know if VO-52 works - I've never even heard its beacon - and AO-27
is only ever enabled over the US, making it useless for most of the
world. It would be great to attempt a QSO through AO-7 but again I'm
not going to go and buy a rig that costs as much as a car to do it.

What if we tried using SSB on the uplink and FM on the downlink as an
experiment sometime. If the uplink passband was left a little wide, several
stations could still be intelligible at once, assuming they weren't on the
exact same frequency, not to mention a cw signal or two off to the edges.
The DSP between the ears can work pretty good at separating signals
sometimes. Not a good mode for handheld operation but may be worth a try
just to see how well it works..

We run that exact mode sporadically, including just two weeks ago for
Straight Key Night. It works well for experienced portable ops, and SSB
capable base stations, but cuts out all the HT and Arrow guys. I think
those HT/arrow guys are the prime users and target audience for AO-51,
and the other groups can play on the often empty transponder satellites
anytime they wish.

Drew,
It could also cut out the HT/ELK people, I'm kidding but since Ray with ELK
gave me an ELK antenna for my HRU Forum, why not give him some "ink". I
also did some comparison tests with the Arrow at I'm able to receive the
satellite at AOS and LOS better with the ELK so far, more scientific tests
to follow.

You are correct Pete, Ray at Elk has really been a good friend to us.
The Arrow has just been such an iconic part of the last ten years or so
of satellite operation, it's sort of become like Xerox or Kleenex in the
vernacular.

Hi!

It is a good radio for FM satellite work. You get separate knobs for volume
and tuning on each VFO, so you don't have to switch between the VFOs
when it is time to adjust your receiver. My 8800 is one of 3 radios I have
that are capable of cross-band full-duplex operation (the others are an
IC-2820H dual-band mobile, and the new TH-D72A HT). The 8800's
receiver is not as sensitive as the receivers in the other two radios, but it
is adequate for satellite work.
One huge advantage for the FT-8800 over the IC-2820H is price. I think
the 2820 is almost $200 more than the 8800, and you don't get anything
extra with the 2820 like D-Star (it is *capable* of D-Star operation, but you
must buy the optional board for that - almost $200 more). The="iso-8859-1"

Hi Gordon , MM0YEQ
To work AO-7 mode-B as I actually do you need only any old
CW/SSB 70 cm TX and any old 2 meters CW/SSB RX wich cost
is not as much as a new car wheel.

SO-50 isn't impossible, but your receiver and antenna system need to
be able to deal with weaker signals than you hear from other FM birds.
SO-50 is transmitting at 250mW, and it gets regular workouts on passes
over here. AO-51 is now running with more power on the downlink than
usual, which will make the difference between it and SO-50's downlink
more noticeable. PL tones are also mandatory on SO-50, to turn it on
(transmit briefly with 74.4 Hz) and to talk through the satellite (67.0 Hz).

I would not characterize a Yaesu FT-817ND and Kenwood TH-F6A (outside
North America, TH-F7) as "extremely expensive" radios. Sure, these two
radios are more expensive than a single 2m/70cm FM HT, even more
expensive than the new TH-D72A HT, but not like the prices were on all-
mode 2m and 70cm gear were in years past. I regularly work the linear
birds with either two FT-817NDs or one 817 and a TH-F6A receiving the
downlink. With an FT-817ND, you also get a radio capable of QRP HF and
6m operation. The 817s have been in production for a decade, so you
could also look at picking up a used 8d out on the roof or trunk of a rental car, wherever I happen to
be. All of my satellite station, excluding antennas and items deemed unsafe
in a carry-on bag for air travel, fit in an old laptop bag. The antenna and
other stuff go in a duffel bag that gets checked for air travel. You don't
get
the numbers of QSOs on an SSB bird that you might on AO-51, but I have
fun with it.

This is incorrect. AO-27 is on for the same times on each orbit, meaning
it covers all the mid latitude northern hemisphere. If you look at
oscar.dcarr.org you'll see plenty of reports for AO-27 over EU.

Drew,
That's funny, I was thinking that too, we just associate Arrow with
portable Satellite operations. I was just so impressed that Ray would just
give me an antenna, and I didn't even own one, that was special.
As a result of the publicity of giving away an ELK antenna in my Satellite
forum, the room was packed and people outside looking thru the glass, but
they had a raffle ticket! Drew, at that point I knew that we don't get many
opportunities to talk about the work AMSAT does and the need for membership
and donations with bigger groups, I spent five valuable "satellite" minutes
connecting my talk to AMSAT and if I added value then you need to transfer
that feeling to your AMSAT involvement. I hope my message got thru to just
a few.

Hello,
I don't use LOTW for Satellite logging, however I logged quite a few
contacts, thank you, during HRU, Sunday. I would like to upload the file to
LoTW however I would like to know the exact header for the adi files so the
SAT contacts will be properly added to LoTW and eQSL, thank you.
