From what I can read they are using ISM rules, for earth bound
transmitters these would indeed be licence free *but* I do have my
doubts if ISM transmitters are alowed in space crafts.

Answer in the radio regulations:

1.15 industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) applications (of radio frequency
energy): Operation of equipment or appliances designed to generate and use
locally radio
frequency energy for industrial, scientific, medical, domestic or similar
purposes, excluding
applications in the field of telecommunications. (Emphasis supplied.)

So, no ISM for long distance work and, in fact, no telecommunication at all
for ISM devices.

Seems pretty clear.

I hope this helps.

Having a D-Star repeater on 145.800 operated by the Italian Amateur Radio
association is a slap on the face as an Italian, as an ex-ARI member and as
an ISS/satellite enthusiast. (Not to mention the fact that D-Star is not
even to be considered ham radio, but that's another story...)

I have already written an email to the responsible ARI section (Chiggia,
near Venice) and to the ARI headquarters in Milan. In a few days I will give
maximum visibility to this matter on www.issfanclub.com.

It's a shame, happening right when we have an Italian ham onboard. It won't
be tolerated...

Thought I'd give this pass s go even though it was only 9 def. Max el from
my QTH.

I heard one station, but couldn't pull his call out of the hash before the
bird went behind my neighbors house. Just wondering who it was. (no, I'm not
going to log it, just curious)

Hi Alain, IZ6IYY/WW3WW

Since you are not anymore an ARI member you have not the right to
complain with ARI about the D-Star repeaters problem in Italy.

It's ARI to have received a slap from you when you abandoned the
only one Association affiliated to the IARU Region-1 in Italy in
condition to do someting to solve the unlegal repeaters problems in
this country.

Damon,

Back in March or so, I ran into VE1SKY, and NL7VX talking about starting
some kind of "after the pass" type net on I think 40 Meters. I'm not sure if
that ever materialized or not.

Hi!

I will be at the Thunderbird Hamfest 2011 on Saturday (8 January)
morning in Glendale, Arizona, with an AMSAT table. The hamfest
starts at 7am (1400 UTC), and should run until midday (1900 UTC),
more or less. More information about the hamfest is available
at:

http://www.w7tbc.org/Hamfest_2011.html

Although this is an indoor hamfest, I plan on going outside with
my portable satellite station and have demonstrations throughout
the morning. If you hear WD9EWK on a pass, please feel free to
say "hello" to the crowd. If you work WD9EWK and would like to
receive a QSL card for the contact(s), please e-mail me directly
with the QSO details. If you're in the log, I will happily send
you a card.

73!

Rather than moaning about the lack of HEO sats and linear transponders,
we should be concentrating on getting as many LEO flights as possible.
That way we can implement this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_bombardment

... on our LEO sats to take out these errant repeaters and beacons in
the sat bands. I've got a couple of crowbars and some fire-door release
magnets out in the shed, if anyone wants to whip up a quick prototype...

Hi All,

I am having problems trying to use the LVB Tracker/G5500 on the Serial
Port. My box will not communicate. Mike Young sent me another box with
the MAX232 chip and I am not able to communicate with it either. I can
control the G5500 via the LVB faceplate.

I am using COM Port 1, 9600, 8-N-1 None and CAN communicate with
hyperterminal with a loopback plug. When it is plugged to the LVB box I
am NOT able to communicate via hyperterminal or SatPC32. The SDX Server
is set correctly to COM1/9600, has been saved and SatPC32 recycled.
Still no go.

My original box, when the USB chip is removed and a MAX232 chip
installed appears to communicate with the G5500, but when the G5500 is
powered off, both meters on the G5500 peg to the max. Very strange.
Still not control via Serial port.

Anyone have any ideas? Mike & I are stumped on this one.

73,

Bob Herrell AJ5C
