Yea PCSat was very weak at it's first pass this morning, so that is probably
the reason why.

Thanks

Nothing wrong with your gear. http://www.ariss.net/ shows no activity
for several hours for ISS. PCSAT is back into eclipse so unless it has
been in the sun for a good portion of the orbit before getting to your
location, it will be quiet as well.

Weird stuff today, I even checked my antenna to make sure it was up ,
frequency correct, but not nearing either PCSat or ISS today and last 2
passes were directly overhead.

Hello Kent,

Welcome to the satellites.

AO-51 was in L/US mode for the last couple of days.
Please check the schedule for AO-51 at
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/echo/CTNews.php

There is a link on the front page of the AMSAT site (top right) under Quick
Access to Project Pages for AO-51. This takes you to the main AO-51 page.
Select the link under the latest news to get there. There is a grid and and
a text page, we are in the process of changing the link to the text page
rather than the grid page. The grid doesn't support the current dual
downlink mode.

The transmit power for AO-51 will increase on Friday to 1W so it will be
easier to hear tomorrow (UTC).

WELCOME, Kent, to this wonderful aspect of amateur radio!

Because you did hear something earlier this week, tha means you're
close to perfecting your setup.

Check the ideas on my tutorial at...

Hello everybody.

I was wondering if anybody has experimented with the FLEXI RADIO Software
Defined Radios on satellites. I know the
SDR 5000 can do dual receive, but can cross-band full duplex be done as well?

Grateful for any wisdom.

Good Afternoon, Everyone.

Last month, a question was posed about the possibility of reconfiguring
LUSAT/Oscar 19 in the "bent pipe" style that AO-16 is currently in. As I am
writing this, both AO-16 and LU-19 are overhead...and both have stellar
signals.

Is there any news/update as to whether or not this can be accomplished??

Upon reading the Satellite Handbook, it appears as though 16, 17, 18, and 19
were pretty much similar. If I am wrong, then I will stand as corrected,
but if 16 could be converted in such a fashion, what prevents 19?

Wishing for Spring!

It should be trivial to do if you have the
transverters. The Flex5000 is capable of full duplex
"Out Of The Box", and the PowerSDR software has
provisions for use with more than one transverter.

Hello Piero,
Robin, VE3FRH has two Flex radios and is most impressed with them. He
did an audio -visual presentation at our Club in Australia a few weeks
ago and is convinced this is the way of the future. After hearing him

They are indeed very nice radios!

However, they are not working on VHF or UHF. The only option is to use a
transverter which is kind of funny since the whole idea was to get away from
"hardware" and do it in "software". I really hope Flex would design a VHF,
UHF SDR for satellite operation. That would be a fantastic.

Hi,

I talked with the Flex guys at Pittsburg about that. They were doing some
tweaks in the full duplex operation. You can used external transverters,
but I was told that fully integrated ones will be available 3rd qtr this
year. Needless to say, I am expecting to return from Atlanta with an order
number, if not a rig, if they come through.

My PC clock runs fast by over 30seconds per day. PC clocks are notoriously
inaccurate because of the quality of their base references. Make sure to
check the time vis the internet or other source(swiss watch), before trying
to use satellites, as even 30 seconds could put your automated
doppler-correction far enough wrong to be inaudible. The shift is very fast
on UHF downlinks and only gets faster on the higher frequency bands. It
will be somewhere in a 19KHz area on your dial, which is a big place to get
lost if your not sure which part of the pass the satellite is at any moment,
especially since your rig lacks a "tuning center" meter. The fact that you
heard the satellite before suggests that you started-out okay, so if you
haven't changed anything else, then this might be the most likely cause.
Also, double-check your TLE's(Keps) to see if they are recent, and ensure
that the tracking software has your physical location input correctly.
AO-51 has been in the same mode for a long time, and is transmitting strong
signals now in order to shed heat, so it's pretty hard to miss it now!

Mode L/US is a special mode they started using lately because they can use
two transmitters at the same time, trying to use up the extra electricity so
that it doesn't have to go to the heatsink of the charging-unit(batteries
full)(as I understand it, I might not be 100% acurate on this detail)
.
L=L-band uplink(1268.7MHz)
US= UHF downlink AND S-band downlink (435.300MHz)(2401.2MHz)

Hi Kent,

Modes on satellites are labeled by what bands they use. L/US means that the
uplink (what we transmit on) is on the L band (1.2 ghz), and the downlink
(satellite to us) is on both U (435 mhz) and S (2.4 ghz) bands. The exact
frequencies are on the Amsat site under "Sat Status" (click on the link for
the satellite desired). Many satellites have different modes that they can be
in from time to time, and AO-51 is one of the most flexible in that regard.
Always full of surprises (and challenges).

Greg KO6TH

Better still, get a program that locks your time to an Internet time
server.

John

Hi John,
Glad that you mentioned it - I was surprised that no one came up with this
comment which of course is the key player at the root of any tracking
programme.
I use "Atom Time Pro" - a free version (unregistered use ) is available for
those interested - - Yes I know that many other options are available for
this function.
Cheers

Dear Howard and Gould,

Thank you very much for replying to my query, and also please accept my
apologies for the delay in replying back as I was tied up with some urgent
matters.

I must say that the LVB Tracker website is really great, and the materials
(documents, pictures, etc) has helped me a lot when building the tracker.
Before asking on the amsat-bb, I was trying to source for a Hitachi LCD but
failed to find one. Since the complete kit that came from AMSAT-UK came
with a Powertip LCD, I was pleased that this was available on from RS
Malaysia. However, since the model number was slightly different and I
could not find any mention about the instruction set, I thought it will be
safer to ask here.

Thanks to both of you guys for the information about the Ethernet interface
too. The circuit seems simple, and when I have finish building the other 2
units, I will try this out. Of course, I would have to obtain the Lantronix
interface first. Thanks for the heatsink precaution too. I see that this
Ethernet interface will provide me flexibility when experimenting with
different software on different machines for satellite work in the future.

A special thanks to Howard for the effort in develop the LVB tracker and
make them available for us to use. I must admit that this is a very
affordable tracker that works very well. After building the first kit, I
was very pleased with its performance that made me build the second one to
use on my other rotator.

73,
Sion Chow Q. C.,
9W2QC.
