Fellow Hams,
The University of Michigan's Radio Aurora Explorer (RAX) CubeSat Team is
excited to announce its launch THIS FRIDAY (November 19th) out of Kodiak
Launch Complex in Alaska! The satellite is a space weather science
spacecraft carrying a 9600 baud UHF transceiver that will transmit telemetry
in the amateur satellite bands. The satellite also carries a radar receiver
on board capable of 1 MHz I/Q sampling of select bandwidths between 400-500
MHz, including the amateur satellite bands. The primary objective of the
mission is to use the onboard radar receiver in conjunction with a powerful
radar station in Alaska to study the formation of a plasma anomaly known for
causing the scintillation of radio signals in the UHF and higher bands. This
scintillation effect is known to inhibit our space radar tracking capabilities
and ground-space communications. Studying this anomaly in this bi-static
radar configuration (ground based transmitter, space-base receiver) will
provide scientists with a better understanding of these anomalies that has
not been achievable with ground radars alone.
If you have an amateur satellite ground station, then we want you to be
involved with our mission! We are looking for amateur ground stations to
help acquire RAX's UHF beacon during the next few weeks of early launch and
continue to help collect telemetry throughout the mission. We also want the
AMSAT community to get involved with submitting proposals on how the radar
receiver could be used for amateur radio experiments after the primary
mission objective is achieved. We anticipate a call for proposals to be
posted to the AMSAT-BB in the next few months.?
For up-to-date launch information, LIVE launch video, tracking and beacon
information, TLEs, and beacon decoding software, please visit our website at
http://rax.engin.umich.edu. Please check this website regularly for TLEs as
TLEs will NOT be posted on the usual sites (Celestrak, Space-Track, etc) for
spacecraft on this launch.?
Thank you very much for your attention! Please email me with any questions.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, etc to get the latest updates on
the launch, acquisition, and science operations! (see RAX webpage for links)

Thanks and 73!

Speaking of rare grids, I'll be heading out to one of the
"orange/reddish" ones in Death Valley early next week. Will try to
work DM17dc and maybe even the DM16ex/DM17ea junction on Monday /
Tuesday (Nov 22/23). Look for me on all FM / SSB sats, I don't know
my exact schedule but I'll try to hit as many as I can.

We'll be interested to see if the rocket contrail is visible from

Hi all,

Somewhat a bit off topic to the birds but has anybody successfully combined
a Magellan Meridian Gold GPS unit to a VHF transceiver? If so, please
contact me off -BB.

BTW, a couple weeks ago I was in the midst of trying to get the TM-D710A
working with an odd split frequency, the ISS uplink/downlink to be more
specific. I'm still in the process of working on that and should have
favorable results soon. I'll keep you posted on that as well. Just wish I
had more time on my hands.

I fully agree with Domenico. BTW there is no website or a video presentation
known about the project FOX. Is this a "paper tiger" ?

If you want to donate for Phase-3E look at
http://www.amsat-dl.org
http://www.amsat-dl.org/p3e/donation-d.htm
http://www.p3e-satellite.org/

And don't forget KiwiSat:

This are projects from HAMs for HAMs with Linear Transponders. Sorry
folks, we have fairly enough FM repeaters in the orbit.

There were multiple presentations regarding FOX at the recent Symposium.
Feel free to pick up a copy of the proceedings until they get posted on

So is ARISSat-1, along with a new robust telemetry system, and several
SSTV cameras.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that soliciting donations for an AMSAT-NA
project on an AMSAT-NA list required your approval. You are free to
support whatever project you like, but you are IMO crossing the line of
good taste and manners attacking our project on our own email list. If I
were an AMSAT-DL or -ZL officer, I'd be embarrassed to have you
harassing an AMSAT-NA on their behalf. Personally I have donated to all
of the above mentioned projects. I also voted as a Director of AMSAT to
spend a large amount of money, a substantial percentage of what the FOX
launch will cost, to keep AMSAT-DL's lab open to continue work on P3E. I
also voted to spend an even larger amount of money on lawyers to try to
find a way to allow AMSAT-NA volunteers to work on foreign projects
without risking jail under ITAR.

David and I plan on working a few passes tomorrow from north of Jameson, MO
on the grid line (EN20xa and EN30aa). We will probably work from the same
location we did a couple years ago on Isle Ave west of hwy 13.

We are planning on working the HO-68 pass @ 1658z, SO-50 pass @ 1831z, AO-27
pass @ 1837z and HO-68 pass at 1847z ... weather permitting...

If you are looking for these grids and can work on of these passes... just
let one of us know if you want a QSL card and we will get it in the mail
asap- no SASE is required.

Hi all.

I am trying to find some information on P3E. I wonder if anyone can help?

Specifically, I'm trying to find the overall mass of the satellite and the
mass of the fuel carried for the 200N orbital transfer motor.

I can estimate it from AO-13, but I wondered if any accurate info was
available.

Many thanks

David G0MRF
