That's kind of late, though if there's any one out there it nice to have a
bit of a chat. Did you transmit the with the 74.4 PL to turn the bird on? At
that hour, it may not be on.

I try to work late passes on SO-50 when I can. The pass you tried to work
was too far east to work from Phoenix, DM33.

Hope to work you soon, FN42 & MA would be a new grid & State for me.....

Was anyone working SO-50 during its pass over FN42 at 12:25a Eastern / 05:25
UTC?

I just finished constructing a WA5VJB yagi just a few hours ago. Was
listening on the downlink during the pass but heard nothing. (Didn't try
transmitting.) Maybe no one was on, maybe the downlink is shifted off
frequency slightly (I see a note of reports of this in the AMSAT Status page
for the bird), or maybe my setup is just broken (very possible -- it's all
new and I don't know what I'm doing!).

In any case, I'll be trying some other passes of FM sats tomorrow.

I've not had any problems bringing the bird up during the late passes such
as the one in question. Between 2200 and 0600 eastern, SO-50 is usually dead
and I find myself talking to myself H-I.

If you'd like to make another attempt I'd be willing to work a schedule with
you to test your gear and ability to work the bird.

Though I'd find it hard to believe it's your antenna... Truth be told I work
the birds on one of two antenna's depending where I am at that particular
passing. If I'm at work I'll work birds over 40 degrees on my mobile rig
with my dual band vertical mag mount. It works and watching my tracking
software on my iPhone I'm able to tell when the bird passes into my blind
spots as it passes. If I'm at home I use nothing more than a 2 meter 3
element beam and an HT in my back yard. SWR are low on 144 and 440 bands,
though my reception could be better I'm sure. However; to this date it's
worked. I've successfully worked AO-51, SO-50, ISS, and HO-68 (Hope-1) with
the set ups above with no more than 5 watts (I don't believe in using big
guns, conserve resources!).

As Rick said, FN42 and MA would be a new grid and state for me as well.

PS: I too have read what AMSAT shows for the frequency shifting, however I
haven't experienced it yet myself, I still tune on the coordinated
frequencies without issue.

SO 67 will be active over the US on 13, Nov. Saturday for one pass only
starting at 1542 Z per request and confirmed by John Lochner of the SO-67
team. Looking forward to seeing you on the bird from a demo at the North
Hills Prep School in Irving, TX in support of an International festival with
a booth hosted by local Scout Troop 606. Should be interesting time with a
chance to promote ham radio to a diverse group of non-hams.

Cubesat Oscar 66, CO-66 SEEDS-II SSTV downlink will also be available at
about the exact same time on Saturday, Ending at about 1555 Z See copied
e-mail below from the SEEDS-II team at Nihon University in Japan. They
downlink an SSTV image with the satellite call sign. Thought it might make
an interesting demo as well but now see the time conflict due to the above
mentioned SO-67 pass. Apparently the time frame is limited so the next pass
they will be back to a CW beacon.

See you on the birds.

I followed the pass of CO-66, SEEDS II this past saturday at 1650ish
on
Saturday, 6 November from my location in Irving, Texas and copied
the CW
beacon. I see that the satellite does periodically output an SSTV
image but
I wonder how to tell when this action will happen. On your web site
you do
show SSTV as an activity at your university receiving station but
can we
receive it in other parts of the world and if so can we tell when.

This Saturday the 13th November I will be doing an amateur radio
satellite
demonstration and would love the opportunity to download the image.

Thank you very much for your help.

I use VQLog by EA6VQ. You can find it here
http://www.vhfdx.info/vqlog.html. It is very satellite friendly. It
will even list individual sat names and the modes. Tracks grids with a
map or tables. And like most logbooks it will track awards. Very
reasonably priced.

Hello All,

Just a reminder that we'll be running a few days of 38k4 packet
beginning Sunday afternoon/evening until Thursday afternoon/evening,
as per the schedule below. Note the voice repeater will be OFF.

Please keep in mind that receiving packet at 38k4 requires more than
your "stock" FM receiver and TNC. Generally speaking, folks are using
a Symek board installed in their satellite radio to tap the IF which
is then fed to a high speed TNC. Other options for a receiver include
a PCR-1000/1500/2500 in FM mode with filters set to 50 kHz (NOT
Wide-FM) (I think that's the right filter width).

Please remember Douglas Quagliana's KA2UPW soundcard decoder (as
presented in the AMSAT Journal a few issues back) that can be
downloaded here: http://www.quagliana.com/ Look for Willow and
Sabins. I suggest you get the software and test it once the
good old UoSat days:

Receivers capable of 38k4 (up to 76k, actually):
TS-2000x with Symek IF board
TS-790A with Symek IF board
Icom PCR-1500

For decoding:
Paccomm Spirit/Sprint-2 Satellite TNC models with 38k4 filters installed
Willow

My preferred combination is the TS-2000x with Symek IF board feeding a
Pacomm Sprint-2 satellite model. I seem to get the best performance
out of this combo.

Here's a reminder of the schedule:

November 14 (late UTC)
38k4 Baud PBBS Operations, L/U
Uplink: 1268.705 MHz FM at 9600 baud
Downlink: 435.150 MHz FM at 38,400 baud

November 18 (late UTC)
FM Repeater, L/SU
Uplink: 1268.705 MHz FM (no PL tone)
Downlinks: 2401.200 MHz FM *and* 435.300 MHz FM (at low power!)

73!

Hi Mark,

Do we know what the BBS power output will be increased too??? With my busy
schedule I will be unable to upload pictures before hand. Hopefully there
are some on the bbs before Sunday to download at 38.4k.
