This is really neat. Now, if Howard, G6LVB, can come up with some ham

I'm reasonably certain I'll work him again, so there shouldn't be any
scandal in my VUCC.

And with that I will now withdraw from this thread.

I may be hated for this but I have to ask, if you make a contact and you
get the call wrong so you would not get a QSL card because you can't mail
the right person is it really fair to use another medium to search out the
correct call in order to secure the contact for award reasons? I always
thought the QSO had to be a successful exchange of at least the call signs
over the air to count as a contact. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Would this apply to using a digital voice recorder also, in your opinion?

I operate handheld (using an Icom w32a and an Elk antenna) I'm unable to
write down ANY information during a contact.
I'd hate to think I'm somehow disqualified from an award because I listened
to my recordings to log my contacts after the pass is over.

The OP only missed the call by one character, and they sound similar. I'm
not sure what equipment both parties were using, but I remember having a
very hard time making out calls with my gear. Especially on AO-51 pileups.
One of the reasons I quit for awhile is I got tired of competing with the
"big guns".

I've been off the air for about a year now. I'm looking forward to getting
back on the birds.

Hello

Since days I try to work the ISS DIGI, without any result ! There is no
respond!

It looks like the item: APOTC1
in the following string creates the problem for
the ISS DIGI.

HB9TSO/APRS/ARISS>APOTC1>UI,?,F0 (1199 baud):

Has
anyone experienced a simillar problem?

Are ther other tracker which work?

Terrestrical APRS is no problem.

Very nice

I personally use a recorder to record my contacts via the birds. I have two
hands, one holding the antenna, the other the speaker mic, I'd need two more
to hold pen and paper. I'd think so long as the QSL is two way confirmed
there's no harm. Regardless how it's logged.

Of course not, no more than writing it down would, but I think you know that.

PS If you want to avoid competing with others on satellite, may I suggest
the transponder satellites? Hope to hear you on soon.

It has been suggested to me that I try the transponder sats. My question is
what type of equipment would I need for this. I'm currently unable to run
any type of mast mounted antenna(s) and would prefer it be portable or
mobile if possible.

My current setup is an Icom W32-A handheld with an Elk antenna. Am I
correct in my belief that I can't work the transponder sats with an FM
radio?

Thanks

You are correct that FM is a no go for the transponder satellites, with
the exception of using an unmodulated FM signal as CW on the uplink. You
will need some way to transmit and receive on 2m and 70cm SSB or CW.

Personally I use a pair of Yaesu 817s and an Arrow while portable, or
sometimes a single 817 for the downlink and the 857 in my truck for the
uplink. The 817 is probably the most popular for portable satellite
work. There are also many fine, older rigs on the used market. I've seen
two 2m SSB rigs for less than $100 this week on the various swap boards.

For the receive side, you can use most anything that will receive SSB or
CW, including downconverters to a 10m radio, all mode scanner type
receivers, the forthcoming AMSAT-UK Funcube Dongle SDR receiver, or even
the all mode receiver in the Kenwood F6A.

It's even possible to use a single 817 type rig half-duplex, although
it's important to keep your power low, and really helps to have
automatic Doppler tuning set up when half duplex.

The transponders are a much friendlier, slower paced and more sane place
to operate, but there is generally not the activity or diversity of
stations as on FM. On the other hand, you can work some fine DX, have
longer QSOs, and it's more of a challenge.

As I recall, I used a "Y" adapter coming out of the headphone jack.
One side to my earphones, the other to my digital recorder. Made
a quick note of my start and end of pass times. I later logged my
contacts from the recording based on how far into the pass our contact
took place.
