We have to create a "Hardest Workin' AMSAT Member" award, and give the first
one to Patrick. When I perform my demos, he's ALWAYS out there. When he
slides into his car, he is ALWAYS stopping alongside a highway to work a
satellite. (Did you see the video he posted yesterday? He is LITERALLY
stopped alongside a highway just to work a bird for our benefit.)

I have seen him in action at a hamfest in Arizona ... I hope some of his
energy and enthusiasm rubs off on us all.

I am working on my PACIFICON presentation for this weekend in Sam Ramon, CA.

At the Symposium this past weekend many people were recognized for
their efforts and achievements for the prior year; I think the Journal
will list them all in due time. Germane to this thread--both Patrick
WD9EWK and John K8YSE were appropriately recognized for their
incredible effectiveness with making contacts and promoting our niche
of the hobby.

Way to go, guys! The contacts these two alone have chaulked up is
nothing short of amazing...

A very good resource is the website of Mike, DK3WN, in Germany:
http://www.dk3wn.info/satellites.shtml

Daily reports on satellite reception are posted here:

Here is a video showing a recent satellite, HO-68, which has
a CW (morse-code) beacon you can easily receive:

Yeah, I have to agree! You AMSAT folks out there need to watch this dude in
action. His set up, his technique, tuning the radio ... the works ... teach
you something just watching him. Patrick's enthusiasm and operating skill
makes ya want to run out and grab your satellite gear and operate too.

Good luck to Clint this weekend too ... working at one of the big ones.

The amsat banner is not an item we sell as they are quite expensive. If you
are going to be at a hamfest with a table a wish to offer the amsat goodies
up as well as have demonstrations, then you can request from martha a goodie
box. It will come with a lot of neat stuff including a banner and member
applications to mention a few of the items.

Got my first QSO on this very strong SAT. Signal is at least 3 S units more
here than than the average pass of other birds. Very excited about working it.

But the audio on it did sound very "fuzzy" to me. Not the usual crisp clear
FM I hear on AO-27, SO-50, and AO-51 when tuned in to center.

I tried FM and FM narrow on my FT-857 and tried fine tuning with the VFO but
it didn't seem to help. Is this the nature of this bird or am I missing
something I need to change on my settings?

  Hi all,

Lately my LVB Tracker (USB) has been stopping in the middle of a pass.
It does not happen all the time, but lately it has been happening more
often.
When this happens I have to turn the G-5500 off/on then restart SatPC32.
Has anyone experienced this with their tracker? I wonder if I should
remove the USB chip and use the RS-232 port.

Thanks.

Clint,

I couldn't agree more. Add to all you and the others have said, Patrick is a
great Elmer. I first met him at WestFest in Glendale back in January and his
demo convinced me that I wanted to work the birds. He's been a great help
to me as I learn the ropes of working satellites. He always has the time to
answer my questions (and anticipate a few as well.

He's gonna be blushing when he get back home......:)

BTW, you're a pretty strong voice as well.

Greetings,

After one year of development, bug fixing and testing we have decided that
it was time to make a new release of Gpredict. This release features several
new features such as the rewritten layout engine as well as lots of bug
fixes.

The new layout engine allows any combination of views to be created in a NxM
grid, see an example screenshot:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/eF3tizT-Xj-az6VcykUzaA

The sky at a glance widget has been improved to look nicer and to be more
interactive. Moving the mouse over a pass pops up an info widget showing
infor about the pass. Clicking on the pass brungs up the pass details
dialog.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/anU9WhY4_40Gk-WVCP7ZWw

The info pop-ups have also been added to the map view and the polar video.
Moving the mouse over a satellite will show the current position of the
sattelite as well as time until next AOS or LOS. You can see a demo video
here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJC4A6onbBg

Complete list of changes:

- New layout engine that allows any combination of views to be created in a
NxM grid.
?Closes feature request 2821408.
- Sky at a glance is now more interactive. Show pass summary when mouse
hovers over pass and
?click on pass shows the details.
- Added satellite tooltips in polar view showing current Az, El and time to
LOS.
- Added satellite tooltips in map view showing current SSP Lat, Lon, Az, El
and time to AOS/LOS.
- Fixed bug 2877974: Incorrect uplink Doppler.
- Fixed bug 2918672: Trailing whitespace and newline in satellite names.
- Fixed bug 2914679: Unable to save Future passes.

The Sumbandilasat and SA-AMSAT team has released their tentative activation
times for this weekend, and it looks like North and South America will have
many active passes. Keep in mind that many Scouts will be active for JOTA
this weekend, so please make an extra effort to contact them and welcome
them to amateur satellites.

73, Drew KO4MA

PS Thank you to the Sumbandilasat and SA-AMSAT team, and also to Ed, N8BBQ
for calculating the pass times.

Hi Clint!

For the pass shown in the video from Saturday, I was out in the Holiday Inn
parking lot near the end of the lunch break working that pass. Adrian AA5UK
and another ham were also out there. Adrian was planning to listen to the
pass
and maybe work some stations, then decided to wander over to my setup. He
had the thought to roll the video about halfway through the pass,
something I didn't
think of at the time (I didn't consider this a "demonstration", even
though I had an
external speaker hooked up to my radio once I saw someone standing near me
to watch what I was doing.

As for stopping along the highway to work a bird, you heard me do that Sunday
evening when we had our contact on AO-51. I found a spot on the EN40tx/EN41ta
grid boundary north of Galesburg IL, along a county road surrounded by
farmland,
and had a good view to the west for that 6-degree maximum pass. I also worked
AO-7 and FO-29 after AO-51 went away Sunday evening, and a couple of early
morning AO-51 passes before making my drive back to O'Hare for the flight
home.
I will scribble more about the post-Symposium road trip later.

Hope to hear you next Saturday, when I'm at a hamfest in Tucson that morning.
More on that in a separate message. Now, back to getting caught up on the
paperwork and e-mails that accumulated from being out of the office for a few
days.

73!

P.S.: Thanks to all for the kind words in this thread and others posted in the
past couple of days. I'm not the only one that works hard on behalf of AMSAT,
so let's not forget the others. As mentioned earlier, a bunch of people were
recognized at the Symposium for their hard work on behalf of this
organization.
