This isn't going to help you much but I use two seperate radios so I can
have full duplex capability. Plus you don't have to fiddle with
duplexers and all that good stuff.

Congratulations!

I had been on for a couple of minutes earlier in that pass, so I could
work VE8EV and K8YSE/VE3. I didn't stick around after those two
QSOs since I was on my lunch break, and it was a bit warm here.
Glad you were able to get Robert, especially after seeing NH6VB's

Is there any reason why a future Amatuer Radio Satellite could not
include a small telescope and CCD imaging.
Would seem to me to be more productive and useful than just exchanging
contact details. After all there are
Weather Satellites.

In principal, no. In practice, how much are you willing to spend?
Perhaps the biggest problem that needs to be solved is how to get the
telescope pointed at the target you want. To my knowledge the best
pointing accuracy we ever achieved in an amateur spacecraft was AO40 at
about 1.5 degrees. And it was spinning, so we only took pictures of
bright things like the Earth where we could get an image with a short
shutter opening. To image stars, you'd probably want 3 axis stabilization
which is a hard problem to solve on an amateur budget. It's not
particularly easy on

ARRISSAT-1 will have a camera aboard, but no pointing ability at all, so
we'll be snapping pictures hoping the earth happens to be in the field of
view in at least some of them. It'll have a nifty Russian instrument
aboard to measure just how "hard" the vacuum is at the upper edge of
Earth's atmosphere. So it's about more than exchanging grid squares (not
that there's anything wrong with that).

THANK YOU to you folks who made this evening's demo in El Segundo DM03
nothing short of fantastic for my audience!

Although the temp was 20 degrees cooler in El Segundo than it was in my own
Riverside, our meeting place was a two-story building. So it was best to
leave the assemblage in the shade, while I initiated reception of AO-51. As
I detected quieting, I looked up at the 30+ in the group, and announced -

"Now is the time to start walkin' towards the guy in the Hawaiian shirt and
weird antenna ... "

(grin)

We worked South Dakota ... Lake Tahoe ... a couple of units in the San
Francisco region, northern California ... YOU know who you are. I do not
record these - too geeky even for me (grin 2).

As soon as we finished the pass, we walked into the El Segundo PD's EOC for
my presentation. The room was full of about 35 attendees.

THANKS AGAIN, AMSAT MEMBERS. My physician has told me to watch my blood
pressure ... but I still get excited by all of this.

Satellite spin and thumbling for some with a 10 minutes effective pass
make's pictures collecting in real time hard to download at 1200 and
even at 9600 bauds.

ISS was sending SSTV pictures at a rate of 3 or 4 per pass and it was still
pictures with a very good quality no spinning or thumbling and
camera was always pointed at the same point as iss is stabilized on 3 axis

An HEO or MEO satelite will be more suitable for this task but the next HEO
launch seems not to be for tomorrow.

Rick,

Thanks for your note--it's not really down. Please refer to:
http://oscar.dcarr.org/

I had intended to do a more complete update later, but here's the quick
version.

1) AO-51 is still in eclipses for the next 4-5 days. Soon we'll be
back in 100% sun (until the end of December.) That means within the
next several days we should be able to keep AO-51 transmitting all the
time. In fact, we'll need to in order to keep temperatures down!

2) In recent days I've had to resort to shutting down the voice
repeater in order to grab some telemetry files from the bird. This is
very important as we are nearing the end of the eclipse period and we
want some good data for current use and for future reference. We
keep the voice repeater shutdowns to a minimum and try to do it during
the AM passes over the eastern US. But they are necessary at this
time. Sorry for any inconvenience.

3) Currently AO-51 has been automatically turning itself OFF and back
ON because of the power budget. You'll see this more often as it
first comes out of eclipse and as it begins to enter eclipse. We
continue to fine tune this, but our goal is to keep it transmitting
when there is enough power--without having the bird shutdown until
manually commanded back ON by one of the command team members.

4) Come January, we won't see much of a break from the eclipse periods
for a long, long time (there is one short window of full sun, but it's
about 2 weeks long in late Feb/early March 2011). The command team
has been using the recent eclipse period to learn how to become more
efficient in the use of the power management code on board. This
allows us to get the most "bang for the buck" out of the available
power. It's pretty complex and versatile. We've learned a
tremendous amount this eclipse period, but still have more to learn in
the future. And there will be a future for AO-51 :)

I hope that helps to reassure you...that is my goal!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to see it was not a real problem. I'm
sure the batteries are getting tired this far into it's life. Too bad about
the upcoming orbit. Man, I sure miss AO-16.

Thanks,

Hello,

I am looking for any information on the following amplifiers:

1.) Watkin-Johnson WJ-6615-512 P1 (GaAs FET Amplifier), frequency range
marked on encasing is 1.0-2.6 GHz

2.) Watkin-Johnson WJ-738-3 (Low Noise Solid State Amplifier), frequency
range marked on encasing is 0.5-1.0 GHz

Both amplifiers have 110V AC power supplies attached to them. As I live in
Germany and we have 220V mains I would like to modify them and operate them
from a DC voltage. However I do not know the needed DC supply voltage nor
the necessary polarity. Any information is highly appreciated, especially a
data sheet.

Many thanks in advance for any help and best 55&73 from Germany

Matthias

Things didn't go quite as planned yesterday from CP39. The plane was late
and we arrived only 5 minutes before the start of the first HO-68 pass. I
grabbed my bags and quickly put together the Arrow and got set up. The
weather was warm and sunny but the wind was gusting to 25 knots. I had a
hard time hearing the downlink over the roar of the wind, I kept losing
the page in my log book, and I had to miraculously sprout a third arm to
keep the tripod, antennas, and radios from blowing over. To make matters
worse, I still have a loose connection on the uplink radio antenna jack
which needed to be held just right to get the RF up to the bird. Somehow
I still managed to get a dozen contacts in the log and about the same
number later on the second pass (which didn't go much better than the
first for all the same reasons). I finished my work and caught an earlier
flight home so I didn't make the AO-51 pass.

Things are still on for tomorrow from CP28. There's no option for an
early return so I'll definately be on for all the scheduled passes.

All,

John, K8YSE will be operating FM birds on Friday from Isle Royale. He
plans on activating EN58 and possibly EN57. He will be portable and on FM
birds only. He said he plans to be back on the road Tuesday and continue
his trip.
