All,

A quick question. I've been on the birds about a week now and have started
keeping a log and breaking out the QSL cards. So what do enter for the
frequency? The uplink or downlink or both? Or nothing since the frequencies
are well known (at least on the FM birds).

Thank in advance for the answers. Also thank to all who've worked me the
past week. It's been fun.

I had custom QSL cards printed for satellite operating. You can see
pictures at the URL below. On the satellite card, the box right below
the middle C of my callsign is "Satellite and mode". I printed the
satellite and operating mode - for example: FO-20 V / U. The next box
was the operating mode - for example: SSB. I made no attempt to print
the exact frequency - especially since it changed throughout the contact
(I spent most of my time on the linear birds).

David,

PA3GUO has described a homebrew switch on his website, http://www.pa3guo.com/

Because of Doppler shift, logging exact frequencies is kind of pointless.
Just note which band and mode (fm, ssb, etc) was in use for both uplink and
downlink, and you should be fine. Note that some call out the band letter
(v for 2 meters), some use wavelength (e.g. 2 meters), and some the general
frequency (145 mhz). I've seen QSL cards done each way.

Also, if you don't like any of the QSL cards that are orderable by mail, you
can make your own with any number of PC graphics applications. Mine are
done in Powerpoint (OpenOffice), and printed on card stock.

Enjoy,

Greg KO6TH

Hi All,

Anyone have any information on AO-51 being off the air the last two pass
over the U.S.?

Maybe Drew doesn't know about it yet.

I tried to restart it this last low pass, with no response, but that's not
surprising. Next pass is 5:42PM EDT where I'll try again.

Paul,
If you look at the webpage www.ao27.org you will find the schedule
of the satellite.
It has exact timings for when the satellite is on. Presently, according
to the site, it is in the "OFF" mode.
Check their sched often since it does change often.

i have also found that passes that are directly overhead are the worst
to try and copy because of the mismatch in antenna polarity. horizon
shots are slam dunk but overhead are virtually invisible (or deaf to my
antennas). you would think because they are closest to you and directly
overhead that you are good to go but this is not the case.

I did not hear the AO-51 435.300 downlink this morning on either the
12:13 Z or the 13:52 Z passes. Did I mess up or is there a problem with
the satellite? The schedule says it is supposed to stay in V/u mode.

Paul,

Just my $0.02....

I've noticed the scheduled time can be slightly off.. last time I listened
it went off air a full 8-10 minutes before it was due to.

An excellent resource for answering questions such as this is the
real-time reporting page at
http://oscar.dcarr.org/
Looking at it right now, I see that many people indicate 'not heard',
suggesting strongly that the problem is with the satellite. Of course,
this resource only works if people add information to it, so consider
posting a 'heard' report from time to time to keep the data helpful.
