Gordon West and I are setting up a test/demo of the latest firmware version
of the Alinco DJ-G7 at the Orange County Fair later this week. It is the
only currently-produced true full-duplex amateur handheld radio.

Gordon West and I are working with local newspapers, CQ magazine, and
possible television coverage for a demo of working AO-51 at the Orange
County Fair (Southern California).

Thurs July 29 5:03PM PDT - GMT 0003 07/30/10
Thurs Aug 5 5:24PM PDT - GMT 0024 08/06/10
Sun Aug 8 5:04PM PDT - GMT 0004 08/09/10

Are any of these dates scheduled for NON-V/U mode? We need as much lead time
as possible for the media.

THANK YOU!

I have two questions. Is there a Droid app for satellite tracking?

I have the HyGain Oscar Beams that are about 20 years old. It appears that
one of the relays is shorted. Does anyone know a repair for this or do I
have to get the $65 replacement from HyGain?

Thanks

Folks (Droid-ers?) have shown it to me at my presentations - works great!

YES, there is a Droid apparently, it's called HamSatDroid. You can find it
in the Android Market, just do a search for ' amateur radio ' it works very
well.

Another thought about Duplex HT for Satellite.

A few full duplex HTs are equipped with 2 tuning knobs which allow tuning
either the primary band or the secondary without having to change bands.
This is a great feature for satellite doppler tuning with a UHF downlink.
Alternatively, I have chosen to use 2 HTs for satellite work to enable
tuning the doppler on the downlink and uplink without any extra steps. This
also eliminates the need for a duplexer. In my case, this is somewhat of an
overkill, because I am using 2 Full Duplex Yaesu FT-470 radios, each on a
single band. But this also allows me to be tuning the downlink doppler
while transmitting on the uplink. Most radios will only allow you to tune
the active band, requiring you to switch back and forth every time you need
to tune the UHF downlink. Typically, AO-51 requires 5 tuning steps on the
downlink for many passes.

With satellites such as AO-51, I have found that with a good antenna and no
obstructions, you can pretty much work the satellite from horizon to
horizon. I have made a home brew version of the arrow antenna (with arrows
for easy assembly / disassembly for travel and storage) with 4 elements on 2
meters and 9 elements on 70 cm. That being the case, I have also chosen to
use a tripod and constructed a tripod mount to hold the 2 HTs, a voice
recorder, and mount the antenna on a hinged support so that it can be
rotated to allow for satellite polarity. For anyone who hasn't already
discovered it, the downlink works best with vertical polarization for most
satellites.

A picture of my portable satellite setup can be seen on QRZ at N7JK.

Good luck on the birds,
John Kopala

Bob,

Yes there is an Android App called HamSatDroid available for free from the
Android Market Place.

Works well. Once you run a prediction, touch that pass and a sky radar map
view
will showup and give you a live overhead pass view. This lets you follow one
satellite in real time along the pass path.

I used it extensively during my KH6 Dexpedition in March-April.

I've been using HamSat Droid for a while now as its a nice little Sat
Prediction app. There are a few other Android apps for Hams out there and
many, unlike the iCrap, are free or donation ware. Some others that I use
are:

Amateur Radio Call Log - Self Explanatory. Just enter the call sign, signal
reports, and band your operating on. Quick and simple.

Compass - Best compass app out there. Not exactly a Ham or AMSAT specific
app, but its very useful for getting your bearings without having to bring a
compass with you to keep the load down. Also Digital mode makes getting your
bearings even easier if you're not familiar with how a compass works to get
your bearings.

DroidSat - This is a great little app that helps you locate and identify
where in the sky various satellites are including AMSATs. After you get your
bearings and pass info you can locate where in the pass the bird is. Really
useful if you started late in the pass or are having problems locating it.

Grid Locator - Self Explanatory. Push the button and it will use the GPS to
locate you and your grid square. HamSat Droid displays this as well, but
this useful for when you're not doing AMSAT work like VHF contesting.

Ham - May not be directly AMSAT related, but still somewhat relevant.
Displays Solar and HF/VHF propagation data.

Ham Radio Study - Studying for an exam? Take the practice exams for Tech,
General, and Extra on the crapper! ;P

IRLP Finder - Uses Google Maps to locate repeaters around you and the area
you wish to connect to that are equipped with IRLP.

Hope this gives you guys some ideas what's on the Android Market. There's
also plenty of other apps out there.

PocketSat for the iPhone and/or iPod touch is the best-available amateur
satellite tracking program available, IMHO.

But I guess because it doesn't meet your "free or donationware" criteria, it
isn't worth mentioning ... (iGrin).

Like everyone said, HamSat Droid is the app for Android platforms. Though
good companion apps are DroidSat, Amateur Radio Log, Compass, and Grid
Locator.

I'll admit I'm biased. I never liked the iPhone. To me its always has been
an over glorified iPod that's locked into both a sub-par carrier and sub-par
software (iTunes) I never liked. Also the latest debacle over the iPhone 4's
poor antenna design doesn't exactly gain it any points. If you want a better
iPod then get an iPhone, you want a better Phone then get an Android. That's
just me and my opinion though, take it with a grain of salt.

Hey - at least we're being honest with each other!

>> ... I'm biased ... never liked the iPhone ...

I don't have an iPhone, but rather a 3rd generation 32GB iPod touch. Coupled
with my Verizon MiFi 2200, I am accessing EchoLink and Skype and updating
the Keps for PocketSat ... and just generally enjoying the heck out of it.
