Thanks to everyone that responded to my for sale email. The OLPC is sold
(actually, if I had a stack of them I could have sold them all).

I respect the opinions each of you have voiced. With some, I disagree.
It seems to me that the problem is not that there are too many FM satellites,
or perhaps as some have suggested that they exist at all, but rather there are
not enough FM satellites, and the ones that exist have too few channels.
The situation is similar to terrestrial repeaters:
When too many users try to access the limited resource, more repeaters get
built.
When you run out of bandwidth, new repeaters get built on other bands.
Usually accompanied by lots of grumbling about the cost of additional
equipment, but it shifts the load from over-used spectrum to under-used
spectrum. Newcomers adapt, frequently in spite of insults and other forms of
"un-welcome". If a system does not attract enough newcomers activity will
eventually die off, which is fortunate.
When bad operating practice and bad manners get mixed with heavy use, the
control elements slap access limiters on the systems, knowing that if they
don't, regulating agencies will shut them down completely.
If someone doesn't like the way a system is operated, he or she is entitled to
form another group of like minded people to establish and run another system
as they see fit within the same regulatory, financial, and technical
environment. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they don't.
As far as I am personally concerned, I don't operate satellite. But given the
opportunity to help a someone or some group put on a satellite demonstration
to a Scout activity or a school, I would do so. I have the professional
background to know how aerospace vehicles are made; I understand some of the
physics of launch vehicles, orbital mechanics, and attitude control systems;
and I have an archaic romantic notion that it is possible to have fun while
you are learning something important.
This thread would take a lot of editing before I could use it to encourage
youth.

Bert,
Just downloaded your program and uploaded my log.
Seems to work OK, except that worked grids only show
in bold print. I am not seeing the colored-coded by
band boxes around each worked grid, as shown on your
web page. I'm using an IBM Thinkpad T42 with Windows
XP.
Does the program show the total number of grids
worked?
Thanks much for the program,

Thanks to Bert, VE2ZAZ, for posting the link to his Website containing his
Ham Grid Mapping Software on our listserv. I was easily able to download
the software, install it, export my data from my DXkeeper logging program,
and set up the bands description so the program could read the data. Great
result for a first version! Took less than ten minutes to get it
going...Thanks Bert.

This competition is open to all students and graduate students
registered at an educational establishment. Competitors are required
to design, construct, and measure a high efficiency power amplifier,
at a frequency of their choice above 1 GHz, but less than 20 GHz, and
having an output power level of at least 5 watts, but less than 100 watts.

Thanks for your opinion, but I really disagree. I often have trouble making
out call signs when people don't use phonetics. Maybe it's my tin ear or
perhaps I need better ear phones, but why not just use phonetics? It does
not take much longer, it helps during marginal conditions and it gets passed
tricky accents. By the way, I wish hams would stick to ITC phonetics,
especially when working DX.

On FM, in my opinion, there is no need for phonetics except for
calls with troublesome letters. Most calls can be heard easily
without using up time with phonetics.

I just added the following item to the AMSAT online store. It is the
long awaited 2007 AMSAT Symposium DVD. It is under CDROM's.
This is a must for anyone that was not able to attend the 2007 AMSAT
Symposium in Pittsburgh or those that attended who would like the
Symposium on DVD.
This DVD has all of the 2007 papers, PowerPoints and audio of the
presentations. Additional features of this DVD are the Symposium papers
from 2004 and 2005, ISS Columbus module video and much more.

Hi Andras,
I think there is a difference between the FM and SSB satellites. For FM you
need to be quick because only one person can use it at a time, and you're
trying to sneak in between other people who are also trying to use the
satellite. For SSB (including AO-7) many can use the satellite at the same
time, and in fact you can have two people calling CQ at other ends of the
passband at the same time for an entire pass, not knowing the other is there.
SSB also doesn't have a capture effect, so even while calling CQ you can hear
someone else tuning up on your frequency in preparation to come back to you.
FM and SSB are very different worlds.
FM: I try to slip my call sign in between people. Letters, no phonetics.
SSB: I call "CQ CQ this is ", maybe twice before a pause, but stopping
instantly if I hear someone key up.
Just my style,
Greg KO6TH

What about the 2006 Symposium in San Francisco? I was there, but it
would be nice to get the papers etc. in electronic form - and especially
a video of Bill McArthur's speech. Someone recorded that with a nice
camcorder, but nothing has been said about a DVD from that event.

2008
Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2008 04:42:18 +0000
The MicroHAMS Digital Conference is almost a month from now, so I wanted to
send out a reminder and some updates about the conference. I've attached the
full announcement (please forward to any mailing list which seems appropreate)
at the bottom of this e-mail. The announcement and online registration are
also available on the MicroHAMS website: http://www.microhams.com.
Updates:
1. I have finalized the list of speakers and topics for the conference. A
full agenda for the day is included in the announcement at the bottom of this
e-mail. I'm very excite about the talks this year, there is something in
there for everybody and just some really cool topics are going to be covered.
2. The location of the conference has been finalized. We will be in Building
122 on the Microsoft Campus. This building is actually on the West side of
Hwy 520, but is still in the general area of the main campus. If you have no
idea what Building 122 means, don't worry. I'll have full directions, GPS
coordinates and a map posted in a couple days to the website.
3. We had a small technical problem with the online registration page for the
first couple days it was available. If you were using the Firefox browser and
went through the registration process, you were never directed to the page
with the Paypal link for paying the registration fee. This was fixed and I
contacted everybody who appeared to have gotten caught by the bug.
My final note is just a request to please register via the online form if your
planning on attending. This is really important so I can get the food order
right and it will really speed up the sign-in process Saturday morning if
everybody is already pre-registered.
I hope to see you all next month!

The talk would cover these basic differences between modulation, protocol and
a mode; give a review of what a "stack" is, and present specific instances as
illustrations. The goal is to
equip hams to be better able to discuss digital communications.
Registration Details
Due to the requirements for hosting the event on the Microsoft campus, we are
required to register all the vehicles that will be parked on the campus. To
make the registration process easier this year, we have a web-based
registration form available at http://www.microhams.com/digitalconference.
You will be able to register for the conference, provide your vehicle
information and pre-pay via the MicroHAMS website. On site registration will
be available if space is available for the $15 at the door fee.
Hope to see you at this year MicroHAMS Digital Conference.

What effect is using a thicker plate have on the antenna. Say going
from .010 to .032.

Hi Sion Chow
Sorry, I only just noticed your post.
Putting my finger in the air, the LCD you suggest should work as it looks
like it uses the standard Hitachi parallel interface.
Regarding the Lantronix Ethernet adapter, exactly as Gould suggests,
essentially it's simply converting Ethernet to a logic level UART interface
just like the FTDI device does. Like the FTDI device you need to install a
virtual COM port driver on your PC.
I wrote up some (very) rough notes a few months ago.
It consists of a 3.3V LDO and some resistors to do 5V to 3.3V conversion
from the PIC to the Lantronix device. The PIC inputs are compatible with the
3.3V levels provided by the Lantronix: this is why there are two unused
TO-92 transistors on the board that I originally thought would be necessary
to do the voltage upconversion.

The Lantronix takes a lot of juice so you must adequately heatsink the 5V
regulator on the main LVB board. I don't think that a simple clip-on
heatsink is sufficient if you adhere to the "too hot to touch" rule of
thumb. The LDO doesn't need a heatsink.

Hello Sion Chow,
I have placed information on LCD selection for the LVB Tracker on the
LVBTracker.com . These were generated from problems we experienced in
selecting LCDs for the complete tracker box.
The ethernet interface has only been tested by building a handmade interface
board between the Lantronix part and the 28 pin Tracker box socket. The
Lantronix software driver does essentially what the FTDI software does for
the USB module - it converts the serial data between the LVB processor and
computer serial port (real or redirected) to either USB or ethernet
communication. The computer tracking software thinks it is taking out a
standard serial port and the LVB Tracker processor thinks it is taking
through a RS232 serial port.
If you have a special program on the computer to generate rotor data into a
USB port or Ethernet port you can use the modules. Essentialy you are just
faking the computer tracking software into thinking it is still talking
through a serial port and using a USB or Ethernet connection between the
two.
