Hi Joe,
Many stations do not have the grid printed on their cards. I also
collect counties, and many don't have the county, either.

But it is OK to look them up and write it in PENCIL on the back
of the card. I think that's in the ARRL's rules for VUCC. I got credit
for
all of those that I had to find it and write it myself.

Also there are a lot of folks that still don't know what grid they're in!

That's probably OK if they're at home, but it they're out portable
or mobile it could be a problem trying to figure it out later.

73, good hunting!

Hello All,

It was very close, to Joe K3SZH not made contact with Luciano, PY5LF via
AO-7. Joe could hear the call of Luciano, but Luciano did not answer the
called from Joe. The kick hit the crossbar, more is very close, very close
to a new record via AO-7. If the locator of the two stations are correct in
QRZ.com, the distance between the two stations is 7839 KM. We are looking
forward and hoping that soon, Joe and Luciano, can establish a QSO and
confirm this great distance via AO-7. But anyway, Joe was able to hear the
calls of Luciano, which proves that it is possible to make a QSO in the
limits approximate of the Footprint of AO-7. Congratulations to both

The FT-817 appears to be a popular rig among satellite users of the fm
birds. As they a all mode rigs I wonder how well they would work for a
linear transponder set up? Rigs for that use are a little hard to come by.
I am hoping to move in that direction some time. However it kind of needs to
be portable as I am surrounded by trees at my house.

<snip>

I set up my FT-817 for working the HO-68 linear transponder a while ago and
made some contacts last week. I had some problems in hearing responses to
my calls, so I corrected the settings for some of the memories.

Right now, the frequency increment of 500 Hz provides reasonable coverage
for the downlink. I switch between the memories and the VFO during a pass,
using the latter to check the satellite's location by tuning in the beacon.

I'll try again when the satellite's in SSB mode and see what happens.

Hi Drew!

Just got off SO67's 0310 UTC pass. Several stations on,
and nice not having to run the high PL tone. A suggestion...
could you please suggest an earlier
turn-on time for evening passes?
Here at 33.6 degrees North, SO67 did not turn on
until the halfway point of the pass.

Hi!

Thanks to the K4T group and their QSL manager, K5WW, for the nice
QSL card that was in the mailbox today - along with the new grid
EL84. Not only was the satellite operation top-notch, the way
the QSOs were listed on the card was perfectly done. Each QSO is
listed, including the satellite and the mode (V/U or U/V) along
with the other standard data - and it is all printed on the card!
None of the QSO data is written in, as some DXpeditions have done
in the past to deal with satellite QSOs on their cards.

Hi!

I'm still working through some scenarios for my travels and radio
operating while I am in Canada in just over a week from now. It is
looking like I will spend most of Sunday, 4 July 2010, operating from
somewhere on the CO60/CO70 grid boundary on Vancouver Island.
Depending on how AO-7 is operating at that time, I may possibly extend
that into Monday, 5 July, so I get an opportunity to work AO-7's mode B
from that location. If I can find a way to safely get into CO50 on the
far northwest end of that island, I will look for a spot at the
CO50/CO60 grid boundary as my first operating stop on Vancouver Island.
I still plan on visiting other grids on the island, but have not decided
yet how and when I will do that. I will not have a 4-wheel-drive
vehicle for this trip, so I will confine my travels to well-maintained
roads and highways.

There is a scheduled meeting of the North Shore Amateur Radio Club
(VE7NSR) in North Vancouver on the evening of Thursday, 8 July, that I
am planning on attending. I will only be a spectator there, but would
welcome the opportunity to meet any satellite operators in metro
Vancouver that might make it up to that meeting. More information about
that club and its meeting are available at the club's
http://www.nsarc.ca/ web site.

As I mentioned on my http://july2010.wd9ewk.net/ web page, I hope to be
able to stretch footprints to work stations in northern and northwestern
Europe and possibly even northern Japan. That web page has a map I
created, centered on metro Vancouver, with circles every 2500km. Since
I will have my all-mode satellite station (two FT-817s) with me, I will
look to work AO-7 (mode B) and FO-29 passes at every opportunity I find
a spot to get on the air. HO-68 as well, depending on its schedule
during the week of 4-10 July while I am in Canada.

If you are interested in making plans to try specific passes, please
e-mail me directly with your requests. I can't guarantee I will be able
to make the times you suggest, but I will try. After seeing what Adrian
AA5UK did on his Hawaii trip, and all the operating Jim ND9M did on his
long road trip through many US states earlier this year, I hope to get
many stations contacts with these grids while I am up in that part of
Canada.

73!

The 2010 Colloquium will follow the same format as last year, and will be
held again at the Holiday Inn in Guildford.

The formal programme will be held on Sat and Sun 31st Jul and 1st Aug. The
presentations will start on Sat 31st Jul at 10am in the Clandon suite (same
room as last year).

Last year, quite a few delegates arrived on Friday afternoon/evening and we
held an impromptu social gathering away from the hotel. We plan to do the
same this year, and also hold a beginners session on Friday afternoon,
probably starting at approx 4pm.

All the 'normal' events will be there, eg Saturday night Gala dinner, AMSAT
Shop, GB4FUN, auction, raffle, etc, etc.

All bookings and payments MUST BE MADE direct to the hotel, and you are
advised to book early, as the hotel will only reserve accommodation for us
for a limited period. The prices are the same as last year, ie ?128, which
includes attendance at the presentations, overnight accommodation on Sat
night, the Sat Gala dinner, breakfast on Sunday morning, and unlimited tea
and coffee during the two days.

There is also a two day package, same as above, but with accommodation on
Friday night and breakfast on Sat morning in addition. The cost of this
package is ?193. If you do not wish to stay overnight in the hotel, the
there is a day package for ?25 per day (?10 on Friday). Cost of Gala dinner
on Sat on its own, ?20. B and B for Sunday night ?75. (None of the above
packages/prices include lunch).

All bookings and payments must be made with the hotel. Please contact Emily
Morris in the Business Centre on +44 (0) 1483 784437 emily.morris@xxx.xxx.

We are in the process of putting together the programme, and Dave Johnson,
G4DPZ, has kindly agreed to do this again this year. Please consider
contributing a presentation or some form of demonstration, etc. Dave can be
contacted at dave.johnson@xxxxxxxxxxx.xx.xxxxxx e-mail address is being
protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

This next Colloquium will be our 25th, so please support this event, and
help us celebrate our 25th anniversary! For those who can remember that far
back, it seems a long time since Harrow School, where, I think, the first
one was held?? Anyone got any photographs of early events? It would be great
to have some on show at this year's event? Please email me if you can
contribute.

You can keep up to date with the latest arrangements and news, by checking
http://www.uk.amsat.org/content/view/704/283/

I, and the rest of the AMSAT-UK committee, look forward to seeing you there.

The Sumbandila team asked that we only request passes while the satellite is
illuminated. Currently, the evening passes are only possible after the
satellite has moved far enough north to be in the sun.

Once you get the hang of finding your own signal, it's a delight to use the
FT 817. I have two of them and I prefer the linear transponder birds over
the FM repeaters.

OK, thanks! For the time it was on last night, it was working well without
needing that PL tone. There were only 5 or 6 stations on that 0310 UTC
pass, and all were able to get through and make QSOs while I was able
to hear the strong downlink.

Have you heard anything about a schedule for the weekend?

73!

Thank you Patrick. I tried sending that to the -bb twice this morning, and
they are still hung up somewhere.
