Hello Yanko,
For VUCC satellite credit I want to see on the QSL card:
1. the word "sat", or "satellite", or the actual satellite like AO-40
2. The 4 digit grid of each of the QSO partners. 6 digit grid squares
are OK too
3. Uplink and downlink frequencies or bands, eg 2M up, 70 cm down, U/S,
V/U, etc.
4. the normal QSL info like call signs, date, time in UTC,
5. signal report: RST for CW (eg.599), RS for SSB/FM (eg.59)
EME recognized signal reports would be OK for EME QSLs.
6. Multiple QSO's on a single card or sheet of paper are OK with all
required info.
If typed/printed I want to see the senders initials to authenticate
Multiple QSO's on a label, on a QSL card are OK.

Yes, not a lot of these awards awarded. Mine is #64 dated 19 November of
1996. Congratulations! :-) That is a serious amount of effort you have
put forth.
Good luck with the Sexagesimal Award and above all, HAVE FUN !
I am not sure if they are even available any more, but the USSR used to
have something called the COSMOS award, and the JARL had the FUJI
award.. also the South Africans had a nice award for 20 QSOs through the
LEOs.. no idea where to even begin looking for info on these now or even
if they are still awarded.
A long time ago, and many, many orbits....

Congratulations on the VUCC award. I got mine in 2004 and it is
numbered 135. Not alot of folks getting them I guess. I am surprised
what with all the grids being passed out on the FM birds now days.

Can't speak to the COSMOS award, but the other two you mentioned
are still available. The South African award is now handled by AMSAT-NA:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/awards/
JARL issues the Fuji award, at:
http://www.jarl.or.jp/English/4_Library/A-4-2_Awards/Award_Main.htm
I was able to have a JARL card checker take my application and fee
payment for the award at Dayton last year. JARL didn't have any of
those certificates at Dayton, so JARL mailed the certificate to me a
couple of weeks later. A nice certificate.
One of these days, I'll get around to writing out my application for a
satellite VUCC. I've got at least 350 grids confirmed at home, and have
not used my free time to deal with that application. More time for radio
and writing out QSL cards.

Hi,
More than 12 years after my January 1998 QST article, I recently acquired a
new Yaesu VX-3R mini-HT. While getting ready for Field Day, I thought I
would try it out on AO-27. With the same MFJ 1717 dual-band whip that I
used back then, the 2-watt VX-3R quickly worked three stations today: K6YK,
WC7V and N5AFV.
Congratulations to them, and of course to the builders and command stations
of AO-27, who've kept it going since 1993.
See you all on FD from our club station, WE7GV.

A little self promotion:
Few days ago I founded in my post office box the VUCC Satellite Award # 197.
Very nice piece of paper.
The next award project is AMSAT Sexagesimal Award. For SAT DXCC I must wait
for the P3E.

It was nice working you, Ray. I have used the MFJ-1717 with a W32A
HT for a hundred or so contacts.
I was working you from my home station using a cheap MFJ ground plane
with a pre-amp for receive on a Yaesu FT-817, and an MFJ Pulsar
dual-band antenna for uplink with a Yaesu FT-857. I firmly promote
the idea that you don't need to spend a thousand dollars or more to
work the birds.
Maybe we will work on FD - I will be using the KK5W call sign of the
Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club.

IARU International Amateur Radio Satellite Forum
The IARU International Amateur Radio Satellite Forum will this year be
held in conjunction with the AMSAT-UK Colloquium which takes place in
Guildford, England on the weekend of July 31 - Aug 1.
The forum, chaired by IARU Amateur Satellite Advisor Hans van de Groenendaal
ZS6AKV, takes place on the Sunday morning.
On the Agenda is a report back on the activities of the IARU Satellite
Adviser and his Advisory Panel.
There will be a brief presentation covering the ITU notification
requirements for satellites operating in the amateur service and the
requirement to be able disable transmissions should the signals interfere
with other users of the radio spectrum.
The forum is open to all delegates at the colloquium.

Stan,
What would you do with cards that only have the grid of the respondent?
Living in South Dakota I get lots of QSLs, and my grid is well displayed on
the card, but I have never bothered to look the other guy's grid up and put
it on the card.
I figured he put his grid on his card and I put my grid on my card.....

Following up on the Lithium polymer battery mention I Googled them and was
disturbed to find:
-high fire risk. One seller offers flame retardant bags to put the cells in
while charging them... for $25
-(as warned) high prices especially considering the more-unique balanced
charger / discharger devices at ~$100 and up being required in addition to the
cells themselves
-a hazardous materials uplift for FedEx shipment ranging from $25-$45
depending on destination, on top of normal shipping rates
All of that tells me they're "not ready for prime time" though the current
capacity vs weight looks very promising.
I will wait and watch, hoping the technology matures into something safer and
less costly as time goes on. Likely it will, particularly the cheaper part,
though it appears some safety issues have to be addressed meaningfully.
Thanks for the mention. It is interesting.

The most predominate problem is people using the wrong chargers for them.
They
think to themselves, "This is a rechargable battery, I can just use my
expensive
NiMh/NiCd charger I already bought". The problem is, of course, that the LiPo
cells have a completely different charging profile that is short-high and then
long-low, instead of the previous long-high, short-low of the other common
cell
types. Thus, people end up charging them for too long at High-C and boom,
they
overheat and catch fire.
The Radio Controlled Model industry has already gone through large failure
occurrences with the charging problem, burning up multi-hundred dollar/hour
investments, catching houses on fire etc.
Most people now charge LiPo batteries outside the models, and use a fired-clay
pot or other heat tolerant container just to be safe.
Using the correct charger goes a long ways towards nearly eliminating all
problems. You have to have a temperature monitor to really do it right, but
any
production battery charging facility needs that.

Li poly batteries are perfectly safe as long as one uses common sense
and follows basic safety procedures. The fire retardant bags and clay
pots are a nice extra bit of insurance but I haven't found them really
necessary as long as I pay attention.
I charge my batteries outside mostly or if I do charge them inside I
don't leave them unattended. As someone already stated, using the proper
charger is the key. With the proper state of the art charger it is near
to impossible to overcharge a li poly battery. I emphasize "state of the
art". A very good one called the Cellpro is made by a company named FMA
and is under $100 in price.
I fly electric RC airplanes and helicopters with Li poly batteries. I
order them online and I have never been charged any type of hazmat fee.
FWIW I've had numerous hard crashes with my heli and have never ever
had a li poly battery explode or catch fire.
These batteries have revolutionized RC flying. Along with brushless
motors, it's a whole new world. It's now possible to fly planes of the
size that used to take nitromethane or "glow fuel" powered engines with
clean quiet electric power.
