I've made several contacts on FM over HO-68 using an FT-817ND at 5 W with an
Arrow dual-band yagi. I've yet to have a QSO over its linear transponder
but I'm working on it.

Keep trying. It's a great satellite.

Anyone have a good used 440 mast mounted preamp they would like to sell?
Needs to handle a minimum of 50 watts output. Ability to accept 12 volts
from the coax line is preferred but not necessary.

Please reply direct.

Those settings look correct to me. I made my first sat contact on HO-68
using just a Yaesu VX-7R ht and an Arrow II handheld yagi. So long as you're
homebrew antenna was constructed correctly, you're aiming for a realistic
max elevation (I usually aim for 30 degrees or higher), you're tuning your
downlink to compensate for the Doppler, and the sat is turned On during the
pass you should be able to establish a QSO. My biggest problem with HO-68 is
the scheduling. For me the sat is usually turned off during the good passes
I can use. If I'm lucky I may get 1 good pass with it turned on a week.

Good luck tomorrow and I hope all is successful.

Hello,

There will be an AMSAT table at the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club's
Hamfest on Sunday, June 6, 2010 from 9 AM to 1 PM in Bethpage NY, at
Briarcliffe College. This is a large Outdoor location with over 600
tailgate spaces to be filled.

WB2OQQ, Pete will be available to tutor new operators and discuss Amateur
Satellites and the benefits of joining AMSAT. I will also be doing
satellite demo's on the FM satellites as time permits. If you are in the
NY, NJ, CT areas please stop by, if you only go to one Hamfest a year this
is the one that you should consider, thank you.

Hi!

After a 3-hour drive from Phoenix, I am in eastern Arizona in
advance of the White Mountain Hamfest in Show Low, Arizona. I
will have an AMSAT table at the hamfest tomorrow morning, and
demonstrations planned for several passes:

1338-1349 UTC on FO-29 SSB (maybe)
1349-1411 UTC on AO-7 SSB
1542-1602 UTC on AO-7 SSB
1613-1626 UTC on VO-52 SSB
1714-1730 UTC on HO-68 SSB
1730-1744 UTC on SO-50 FM
1750-1801 UTC on VO-52 SSB (maybe)
1913-1924 UTC on SO-50 FM
1937-1944 UTC on AO-27 FM

The hamfest site is in grid DM44xg, and officially runs until
2000 UTC. I hope to hear K8YSE and KD8CAO at their hamfest in
Michigan along with N2SPI at the Rochester NY hamfest and KK5W
operated by N5AFV in Texas. Lots of activity tomorrow morning.

After the hamfest, I will find someplace in DM54 for passes in
the afternoon and evening. I have already tried to find a spot
on the DM44/DM54 grid boundary. Trees and "No Parking" signs
have ruled out some places I've already surveyed this evening.
I found a spot north of Show Low that might work. I may be able
to get on the AO-27 pass at 2118-2125 UTC from DM54 or possibly
DM44/DM54. After that, I plan on attempting the following
passes from somewhere in DM54 or on the DM44/DM54 boundary:

2256-2311 UTC on AO-7 SSB
2315-2329 UTC on AO-51 FM

I have 3 passes that overlap in the 0040-0110 UTC period:

0043-0105 UTC on AO-7 SSB
0053-0107 UTC on FO-29 SSB
0054-0108 UTC on AO-51 FM

I am leaning to working one of the SSB passes, probably AO-7
since it is the longest of the 3 passes. I might work the
first part of the AO-7 pass, and then switch to AO-51 for the
west-coast operators that may be looking for DM54. Please
e-mail me if you are in the western US or Canada, and would
like to try for a QSO on that AO-51 pass.

After that, SO-50 comes by at 0206-0219 UTC. Then FO-29 and
AO-7 pass by around 0237-0257 UTC. I'll probably start on AO-7,
if I am still outside working the radio at that hour (approaching
2000 local). I don't want to stay out too late tomorrow night,
since Sunday morning will start very early, for the 3-hour drive
up to DM56 in time for mid-morning passes.

As with my other road trips and hamfest demonstrations, I will
be happy to QSL all contacts made with WD9EWK from the hamfest
and wherever I end up in DM54 tomorrow. Just e-mail me with
the QSO details; if you're in the log, I'll send out a card.

73!

Thank you for reading this.

Not long ago I remember reading, on this list, about someone running
mmsstv under wine. I've had receive only capability for sometime but after
recently receiving good sstv from Seeds my interest in transmitting sstv has
been reawakened.

I have the extfsk dll installed in the same directory as mmsstv and its
dialogue box opens to show that the ptt is on during transmit, however, the
transmitter is not keyed. The port option in mmsstv is set to extfsk.

The extfsk dialogue box has a status indicator the reads "Status:NG". This
possibly means "no good". The status reads the same under Windows, so
the problem may not be specific to Linux and wine.

By the way, the rts line does key the transmitter while using native linux
applications.

To add to the discussion the July/Aug 2007 Amsat Journal has an article
covering some gain comparisonmeasurements I made between four
13 turn (2.88 wavelengths) 13cm antennas with different square solid
aluminum reflectors.
The sizes were 0.56 wavelengths, 0.84 wavelengths, 1.0 wavelength and 1.4
 wavelengths.
There was no difference between the 0.84, 1.0 and 1.4 wavelengths but the
antenna with the0.56 wavelength reflector had 1.5 db less gain.

However for my 70cm helix antennas I followed the Satellite Handbook
minimum
size of 0.6 wavelengthsor slightly over 16 inches. I used 1/2 inch hardware
cloth
mesh to keep the weight and windloading down.
These antennas have performed well however it appears that they would be a
bit better with a somewhat larger reflector.

A brief description and picture of the 70 cm reflector is in the
November/December 2005 Amsat Journal article on
The Development of a Quarter Wave Match for helical antennas.

Hello,

I was in contact with the ARRL, after I read 7.3.7. and 7.3.7.1. in the
Field Day Rules. I mentioned to the League that I would like them to point
out where in those rules it would prohibit scoring the same call on multiple
Linear Satellites. They listened to my point's and agreed that even though
the rules refer to satellite contacts as a separate "band" there is nothing
in those rules that prohibit the aforementioned scoring. In conclusion
Field Day and the AMSAT scoring are now in agreement, have fun.

That should make it much easier for everyone as you don't have to do one log
and then strip out the unwanted calls for the other. Thanks Pete. I am glad
that the two minds (ARRL and AMSAT) have become one.

Subject: [amsat-bb] FIELD DAY SCORING
