We in Alaska, who experienced the Exxon-Valdez Spill (many, like me,
worked on the cleanup), are sympathetic. I am, however amused, when
with media statements like "there is 100-miles of shoreline
impacted". Exxon-Valdez spill contaminated 1100 miles of Alaska
shoreline from Cordova to beyond Kodiak Island.
In time, the impact of the Gulf spill will easily eclipse that of the
AK spill. Alaska shore is almost entirely wilderness, while the Gulf
and Atlantic coasts are mostly inhabited - fishing or resort
industries. Much more impact.

Nominations for the AMSAT Board of Directors must arrive at the AMSAT Office
no later than June 15th. A nomination requires either one current Member
Society or five current individual members. Three directors' terms expire
this year.

Hi Mike,KB8ZGL
First of all reverse the elevation wires E4-E5-E6 with the azimuth wires
A4-A5-A6 on the rear of control box.
If the Elevation motor is OK then pushing down switches Left and Righ
the Elevation motor should run Up and Down and if not it means that
the Elevation rotor is damaged somewhere or the command cable is
intermittent.
One possible cause is the starting capacitor C35 100 uF 60 volt AC into
the elevation rotator that is probably dry or open circuit or probably the
limit switches SW8 or SW9 are defective.
In any case reversing the wires as above if the control box is OK then
pushing the elevation buttoms UP and DOWN the azimuth rotator must
run Left and Right.
In a separate message I have sent to you the schematic diagram for the
G-5500 rotator.

Hi all.
This seems to have slipped below the amsat radar.
Good luck Elon.....
Friday 4 June 2010
Launch Window Opens: 11:00 AM Eastern / 8:00 AM Pacific / 1500 UTC
Launch window lasts 4 hours. SpaceX has also reserved a second launch day
on Saturday 5 June, with the same hours.
As always, weather will play a significant role in our overall launch
schedule. The weather experts at the Cape are giving us a 40% chance of ?no
go?
conditions for both days of our window, citing the potential for cumulus
clouds and anvil clouds from thunderstorms.
If the weather cooperates, SpaceX will provide a live webcast of the launch
events, presently scheduled to begin 20 minutes prior to the opening of
the launch window. Click _here_ (http://www.spacex.com/webcast.php) to
visit our webcast page which will also be accessible from our home page the

Hi All:
I am rebuilding a 440 MHZ Helix that I built several years ago . It worked
very well, but I would like to reduce the size of the reflector to a more
manageable size than I had before. The only reference to reflector size I
can find is, "minimum 20" ". I may be looking in the wrong places. I would
appreciate it, if someone would steer me in the right direction.
Thanks,

According to the W1GHZ antenna book at :
http://www.w1ghz.org/antbook/conf/Helical_feed_antennas.pdf
"The ground plane diameter is typically 0.94? in diameter" or about 25.25"
for 440 MHz.

Hi Pete,
Take a look at this article on helix ground planes:
wnloads/Helix_Letter.pdf
It is also possible to make a helix with no ground plane.
This was a cover article of the IEEE Antennas magazine in 1995.
Search for the article
Kraus, J.D. A helical-beam antenna without a ground plane.
IEEE Ant. Prop. Mag., 37 (2), 45, 1995.
at
<http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/guesthome.jsp>http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xp
lore/guesthome.jsp
You have to buy this one from IEEE if you are not an
APS member.
Best of luck with your projects!

Craftsman makes a small strap wrench that I have used to remove elements
that were stuck by the use of too strong locking compound. It sells for
around $5.00 There should be other manufacturers of strap wrenches that
could be used.
Apply the strap near the threaded end of the element, not farther than a
half inch from the boom. The threaded insert should prevent collapse of the
tubing. I recommend not using a pliers, it will chew up the outside of the
tubing. Proper use of the strap wrench should apply enough torque to remove
the element.
The recommendation of the use of copper particle anti-seize compound is
good.
Any other suggestions ?

Thanks to all who responded.? It
is an ELK, NOT Arrow, that is stuck.? I am now in
Europe with no antenna, will try to get on the sats anyway somehow.
At least one day, I will work AO-7 from the spot where Slovakia, Hungary,
and Austria touch together, thus 3 countries for one qso.

There will be an AMSAT table at the Hudsonville, MI,
hamfest on June 5th from 8am to 2pm. Doug KD8CAO and
John K8YSE will be on hand to discuss satellites; AMSAT
gear will be available for purchase. If you live in
West Michigan, please stop by and say hello.
There will be a satellite demo during the hamfest starting
with an AO-51 pass at 1203 UTC. We will try to work AO-7
at 1345z, SO-50 at 1555z, VO-52 at 1611z and HO-68 at 1713z.
We will be using a mobile setup with a TS2000, an Arrow UHF
7x7, 5 el Mosley on 2m, G5400b rotor with SatPC32 controlling
the rotor and radio. Hopefully we will have a good view of
the sky. We may be on some Friday evening passes during the
setup and pot-luck event. Check our position on www.aprs.fi
and search for K8YSE-8. We would appreciate contacts during
the demo, especially from other hamfests.
K8YSE/M will be operating on Friday June 4th en route to EN62 from
EN91. Hopefully there will be places to stop during passes on
the way. I will try to operate on the way back on Monday, June
7th as well. Check aprs.fi for our position.

Clint,
VUCC goes by grids, not necessarily who you work on what bird. It is the
grids that matter.

10.66 inch diameter loop Reflector. His antenna was designed for
437.1 MHz so you will want to adjust size to your operating
frequency. If you doubt the performance of this antenna, mike
detected MGS at 10 Million km from earth. MGS signal output is
approx. 1w EIRP.
http://af9y.com/helix.htm
I made an 18-turn version of Mike's helix, but did not have my 432
converter completed in time to receive MGS. I used a 15-inch
aluminum pizza pan for my reflector. In general one uses a 0.5 to
0.6 wavelength reflector (diameter) (13.6-16.3 inch at 440-MHz) (Not
withstanding W1GHZ's findings in his Antenna Book)

Starting June 9th thru the 30th, we'll be on another vacation roadtrip, and
like last year, will be taking the FT-60R and Elk yagi along for working the
FM satellites at various stops. The only planned stops are in Yellowstone
NP, Cody, WY and Mt Rushmore in SD, otherwise it is driving to other spots
that look interesting. Possible other states to visit are ND, MT, ID, WA
and OR on the return loop, but that isnt set in stone. There is a
possibllity that we'll make a trek into Nebraska, so I can pick up my Gulf
Alpha's that are ready, but not sure yet. More than likely I will be on
passes early AM or sunrise and early PM or dusk. Hopefully I will be in
some grids that are needed by some, and if so, just send me a QSL card (no
SASE required) or email and I'll return a card.

Hello,
There will be an AMSAT table at the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club's
Hamfest on Sunday, June 6, 2010 from 9 AM to 1 PM in Bethpage NY, at
Briarcliffe College. This is a large Outdoor location with over 600
tailgate spaces to be filled.
WB2OQQ, Pete will be available to tutor new operators and discuss Amateur
Satellites and the benefits of joining AMSAT. I will also be doing
satellite demo's on the FM satellites as time permits. If you are in the
NY, NJ, CT areas please stop by, if you only go to one Hamfest a year this
is the one that you should consider, thank you.

We have tried coffee mugs before. They are difficult and costly to ship.
