Graham,
Please take the FT817 with you and op on AO7 and VO52. You will have no
problem working those birds with that radio and antenna. Not to mention,
Those of us on those birds will have a opportunity to work you. :)
Thanks,
Dave, kn4ok

Hi all,
Later this month I hope to be trying some satellite operation from a boat
rom the seas around Scotland, Norway and up inside the Arctic circle.
I have my trusty Kenwood TDH7 and Arrow combination for possible FM use but
ave been wondering whether to take an FT817 for SSB transmit and perhaps a
H-F6A/F7E for receive.
I would appreciate any advice on the suitability/practicability of the
atter combination..it has the advantage of being already available!
thanks
Graham

We plan to work as many of the passes in the attached schedule as possible
from the AMSAT Demo Area at Dayton Hamvention this weekend, 14-16 May 2010.
The times shown are in UTC. Please note that a few of these passes are just
before or just after Dayton Hamvention's posted hours. AO-51 will be in
Mode V/S for this weekend and we will attempt to work as many of these
marginal passes as possible. There is a very low elevation pass of HO-68 on
Friday evening during the AMSAT/TAPR Banquet that we may try to work from
the Banquet Area. It has very good European coverage. Other passes of
HO-68 in FM mode will have the NW portion of Europe in the early part of the
pass. All of North America and part of South America will be in the
footprint later in the passes. We hope to work you on the "birds."
If you are attending Dayton, please come by the AMSAT Demo Area for an
"Eyeball QSO" and a look at the hardware and other demonstrations.

Thanks all for the many many replies, (almost too many to count) both
here and off-list, to my post about PC time being in error. After
considering many, I have taken the advice of Mike DK3WN and Alan VE4YZ
and performed the registry edit they both recommended. I have my PC now
updating time once every hour, a 3600 second delta. So far, my PC time
is no more than one second off compared to WWV time. I do not like
messing with the windows registry, but in this case, it was sound
advice. Tnx and 73,

Hi Reid,
I believe PCSat32 will run an FT-897 to work a linear transponder.
Of course you can also use the old InstantTrack with InstantTune
just tell it you are using an FT-817.

Hi Larry,
I know PC clocks are not all that accurate, but we're talking seconds per
month. Needing to update a clock more often than that probably isn't due to
the PC hardware. I've never had one be off this much unless the clock
battery was dead, and any PC new enough to run Win-7 isn't going to have
that issue. I would suspect that there is a some software you are running
that is messing it up. Back in the DOS days, this was a common occurrence,
and I'm surprised to hear about it under something more modern, but my gut
feel tells me that is what is happening.
Maybe a device driver or something else low-level. Try booting something
else (a "Live" CD of Linux, for example) to prove the hardware is good. Go
back to Windows piece by piece. If you can figure out which it is, then
this whole idea of applying bandaids can go away.
Just a thought,

We made the mode change this evening to V/S on AO-51. I and the rest of
the command team are a bit concerned that we may not have enough battery
capacity now to sustain operation through eclipse in V/S mode. We cannot
PTT the transmitter with PL like the UHF transmitters, nor is there any
way to lower the downlink power on S. If the battery voltage drops too
low, the voltage watchdog will shut the S transmitter off and it will
remain off until commanded back on.
If we cannot make it through eclipse in this mode, we can try to use the
automatic scheduler to enable the S transmitter at a predicted time upon
exiting eclipse each orbit. We've not tried to use the scheduler this
way before, so there may be some time required to get things
working. This approach will require daily intervention to keep things
running.
The next four months are going to be challenging keeping AO-51 as
available as possible.
Please either email me directly, or via -bb, or post to
http://oscar.dcarr.org/ reception reports for V/S. Send those reports in
this week please!

Greg,
During the process of getting a serial port interface that worked
properly with W7-64b, I experienced a myriad of system crashes. This is
possibly why my clock got off by about +30 seconds. I often check my
PC's clock against the WWV clock on my wall, especially when tracking
birds. It's now on to within a second. If it got off by more than 2 or
3, I'd want to corrected it; the problem is not Doppler, it's a near
overhead pass (that's when I discovered the PC time error). Plus, I
want correction automatic and not have to mess with it for a long time.
I believe the once-a-week default in Win7 for syncing PC time with
Internet server time is too loose. Once a day or even once an hour
seems better to me.

Hi!
Thanks to all the stations that made QSOs with WD9EWK yesterday,
while I was down at the DM32xx/DM42ax grid boundary near Maricopa
AZ. I parked along a road, a couple hundred yards/meters south
of the spot where four grids come together (those two, plus DM33
and DM43). I logged a total of 50 QSOs on 7 passes - 2 each on
AO-51, SO-50, and AO-7; plus one FO-29 pass - in just over 3 hours.
I was unsuccessful on an FO-29 pass with maximum elevation of 8
degrees from that location a few minutes past 0000 UTC, south of the
Southern Pacific transcontinental railroad line and near a Nissan
automotive test center. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon,
a warm day in the central Arizona desert - around 95F/35C outside
when I started, but comfortable for the last pass I worked at
0220-0240 UTC on AO-7 at sunset.
I have written out cards for anyone who requested confirmation for
QSOs made yesterday. Those will go to the post office tomorrow
morning. I also wrote out additional cards for stations that I've
never worked from DM32 before, some with SASEs if those stations
are new for my log, since DM32 is particularly rare on the satellites
(most of the grid is a military bombing range, with a small part
extending into northern Mexico). Please e-mail me if you would like
to receive a QSL card for a QSO from DM32/DM42.
Since the northeast corner of grid DM32 is less than an hour's drive
from downtown Phoenix, this is a location I visit periodically. If
you need DM32 for your satellite log and missed me yesterday, please
let me know. We can make arrangements for a quick stop down there
even in the summertime to make a QSO.
73!

Hi Bob W7LRD
The AO-51 S band antenna is linear but the satellite is slowly thumbling so
that the antenna can appear to you as oriented from any possible position
and with any possible squint.
Switching polarity from RHCP to LHCP or from linear vertical to linear
horizontal is complicated in S band and make very small.
Probably it is better to use a linear feed as a dipole in the focal point
and
be able to rotate it very fast by 360? in 10 seconds or less using a small
DC motor with a gear box as many EME operators uses to compensate
the polarization change due to Faraday rotation.
A bigger dish complicates your life for very small because the satellite
traking
becomes more and more critical.

If anyone has a bad/junk K5GNA, I am looking for the dipole ( white piece
in a cross configuration). A fellow ham has K5GNA with a diople that is
broken.

Hi,
perhaps you have already seen this music video from the ORBITER 2006
computer game community, good simulations nonetheless!

If you wish, please circulate it to your colleagues elsewhere for bringing a
bit of enthusiasm to their jobs and hobby life.

Hi Drew,
I monitored the "S" band downlink for the UK 1536 hrs pass at my location
here in Wales.
The max elevation was 33 degrees with some screening due adjacent trees
Even with my moderate equipment I heard a number of European stations whom I
pleased to report were quite strong, some 5 -9.
Glad to report the good news following your switchover, a big thanks to you
for all of the time and effort that
you put into keeping everything ship shape.
Regard to all.
