Anything less and you are being irresponsible with the public you are

Only because they have nobody on their staff who knows what an antenna is.
They don't pay high bucks for the fun of it.

Point well taken Clint.? We do have a communication link however there have
been occasional fades.? I am just a small cog in the big wheel.? I will
advise the powers to be accordingly.

I would not live in a community where my public service departments were
depending upon homebrew comms equipment for critical emergency communications.

This is not demeaning to the amateur radio community at all. Amateur radio
should DEMAND such respect and recognition in the emergency plans of their
communities.

Then get your radio vendor out there and see why this happens. Most vendors
will send a tech out to their commercial clients at little or no charge - to
maintain your business relationship. I performed plenty of site surveys and
diagnostics for my clients while working for a Motorola dealer.

It may be as simple as one feedline deteriorating ... or moisture in just
one connector - that is causing your "occasional drops!"

Do you also demand commercial quality radios?
Here, it's standard amateur transceivers, antennas and power supplies.

It is against FCC regulations in the United States to use amateur gear on
frequencies allocated for public service.

I don't think we're talking public service frequencies.
I think we're talking ARES/RACES/WARN backup on amateur bands.

The original poster used "fire department" and "EOC" comms in his original
post. That, to me, demands a "step up" in integrity of the radio system.
Those phrases, to me, mean that the safety of the public may be involved.
And that, to me, means no "homebrewed" ham antennas should be on the front
line.

If they are wanting "mission-critical" emergency comms, then they should
be staying off the amateur bands and using the frequencies assigned to
them and equipment approved for the task.

Ok! before this thread gets out of hand!

--A group of local hams has organized themselves utilizing our resources and
abilities to serve a back up communications in the event of a situation
where local authorities are overwhelmed be the event.? The local authorities
have purchased ham gear for this purpose.? We have a repeater, many
dedicated volunteers, and have regular drills in coordination with the
aforemantioned authorities.? We do not use ham gear on public service
frequencies.? One of my bumper stickers says, "when all else fails".? I am
sure someone can pick this to pieces.? However we're just volunteer hams,
not professional police, firemen etc.? When the crap hits the fan, we're
usually there, and we can and do "make do" with what we have.

End of thread

True but we're talking the US equivalent of RAYNET providing emergency

Over the past week or two I have noticed that SO-50
is changing frequency during the pass. Today at 2308z
I made some transmissions and then noticed that my
downlink was distorted as well as the station I was
working. A change from 436.790 to 436.795 for the
center frequency (not the doppler corrected frequency)
made the audio clear again.

This has happened to me a few times now and seems to occur
once the transmitter has been on for a minute or two. Has
anyone else noticed this?

Hi John
I have also noticed this deviation in frequency since a long time.
Already put up two frequencies in the Satpc32 CAT, and 346791.0 and
436795.0

Assunto: [amsat-bb] SO-50 Frequency Jump

Over the past week or two I have noticed that SO-50
is changing frequency during the pass. Today at 2308z
I made some transmissions and then noticed that my
downlink was distorted as well as the station I was
working. A change from 436.790 to 436.795 for the
center frequency (not the doppler corrected frequency)
made the audio clear again.

This has happened to me a few times now and seems to occur
once the transmitter has been on for a minute or two. Has
anyone else noticed this?

John K8YSE
