Hi Hamsat Team,
Thanks for building this great Amateur Satellite it is always a pleasure
to hear and work this great bird. I think when somebody will ask me what
my favorite linear transponder Satellite is VO-52 will be the first one
that crosses my mind.
And as somebody already mentioned, lets hope it will be working for
another long time.
I'll buy some cake and candles to celebrate here birthday :))

Yes. I'm using a Keyspan USA-19W with a MacBook Pro, and running OS
X. Works great, never a glitch. Sorry, that's probably not what you
wanted to hear if you're stuck with Windoze 100% of the time, but I do
occasionally cross over to the dark side when I want to run HRD. I
also have a copy of Win XP on my Mac for those crazy moments. ;-)

Yes. I'm using an 8 port Edgeport device with my 847. I use three of these
in my shack two 8 port, and one 4 port. All work flawlessly. You can find
them on Ebay, see item 320523234316 . I paid $25 to $40.

No one is trying to limit the the usefulness. Exactly the opposite, the
idea is to pick the mode that is the MOST useful. It's a quantity versus
quality problem. On a typical V/U FM Field Day pass, very few contacts
actually get made, and most of the pass (at least on the east coast) is
nothing but a fragmented dogpile of pieces of calls, whistles, blowing
in the mike, etc. Some people enjoy that, others walk away in disgust,
and think "why would I want to be part of that mess".
It's my contention that we pick a mode on AO-51 that provides a more
challenging goal for the technically inclined portion of the hobby,
encourages clubs to actively seek help from their local AMSAT types, and
provides a more civilized environment on just one of the eight LEOs
likely to be active that weekend. Think of it as showcasing what amateur
satellites can be like on days other than Field Day. By limiting the
accessibility, we improve the quality of the experience for those
actively participating, and just listening. Again, AO-51 is one of many
satellites. If it were just AO-51, we wouldn't even be having this
conversation.
One option that hasn't been floated is trying a mode switch on the early
AM Sunday pass. We could go from L/U to V/U very easily. If we do this,
I'd like to work with Bruce and actually count the number of QSOs
reported per mode.

Joe,
My neighbors have several "wireless" devices that operate close
enough to our frequencies to raise my noise level or produce a series of
clicks and other noises. The worst offenders are a wireless network and a
cordless phone. During the AO-40 era I bought a cordless phone from a
neighbor that was very troublesome. I have since moved to a country
location, and find it interesting that I can tell what direction town is by
moving my antenna (pointed at the horizon) and listening to the noise level
on mode S.

Hi Joe
Your comment about Mode S interference interests me
I have not been on since AO-40
In those days there was no interference on mode S.
Unless it was another Ham.
Would you kindly explain?
Thanks

Wow, the famous 'cigar' antenna. At that price you can afford to play with
it.

Has anyone tried one of the itfs mmds downconverters like this
one on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110523087399&ssPageName=S
TRK:MEWNX:IT
for ao-51 s band downlink? 75 ohm out and looks cheesey but
less than $30 shipped. it's cheap enough for me to play so I
bought one to experiment with, maybe just to remove the
downconverter. I would welcome stories of your experience or
just advice.
Thanks

You will be astounded with the signal you will get from one of these
downconverters. I used this modification:

One option that hasn't been floated is trying a mode switch on the early
AM Sunday pass. We could go from L/U to V/U very easily. If we do this,
I'd like to work with Bruce and actually count the number of QSOs
reported per mode.

That's a novel idea! I would support a mode change. They kept things
interesting on AO-13 during Field Day.

I have one of these all-in-one units on my shelf here. The filter
construction is *not* identical to the Cal-amp models, but you can use the
same roadmap as in my article to figure out what is what. It will be a
little trickier to get to work reasonably at 2401. This is because the
input filter is a metal-ceramic (probably helical?) no-tune component that
is soldered and glued to the board. The frequency range 2300-2700 MHz
really depends on what it was designed for--some of the I understand some of
the Austrailian models work at 2401 right out of the box, but the one I have
(designed for MMDS service in the US) is probably 20-30dB down from its peak
around 2500 MHz. The front end filter appears to be the bottleneck. Like
other MMDS converters in the US, this one has a 2278MHz LO that gives you a
123 MHz IF for 2401.
Replacing that filter looks to be a bear, though it might be possible. If
anyone has figured out how to do this without destroying the thin PC board,
there would be many people interested. I imagine it would work acceptably
for AO-51 if you just bypassed the font-end filter, but if you have any PCS
stuff in the 2.1 GHz range you might have issues from the image frequency.
I did that for my first S-band contacts with a Pacific Monolithics MMDS
converter, using a horn antenna fashioned out of a large soup can it it
worked fine from downtown Rochester, NY.
