Agreed. Sure your arm gets tired after a long pass from satellites like
HO-68, but half the fun is the simplicity and the other half being the
challenge. I doubt I would personally get involved with L/U on LEO's like
AO-51 because of the cost and complexity of having computer controlled
servos to track them just for a 10 - 20 minute window that you only get once
or twice a day depending on the LEO. Considering I work satellites mostly on
weekends the amount of use it would get wouldn't be worth it for me. I'd be
more likely to build a setup for working HEO's like AO-40 before building a
setup for L/U work on LEO's due to the simplicity, larger foot print, and
longer predictable window.
To be honest I would use FM on AO-51 as that is the most likely usage new
comers to satellites will most likely end up using. If you want to
demonstrate the raw rag chewing potential of satellites then demo a HEO like
AO-40.

For some us figuring out how to let the computer do all the work is a huge
part of the fun! It's like solving a big puzzle.

Presumably that's because very few people have L- and S-band equipment.
I'm guessing that many people are - like me - put off by the prohibitive
cost and requirement for overcomplicated tracking systems.
Working V/U with a handheld antenna is much more fun than sitting
watching a computer twiddle servos and tune the radio for you.

Hi!
With all the talk about the possibility of an L-band uplink and/or
S-band downlink on AO-51 since there will be at least 2 other V/U
FM satellites available during Field Day weekend, what about sticking
with the V/U frequency combination but go with something different
for the 2m uplink mode? Using SSB or even CW on the 2m uplink would
make AO-51 different than the other V/U satellites, yet still provide
a challenge that more stations could take on than L-band or S-band -
and the variety that Drew mentioned that the AO-51 group wants to
provide for Field Day weekend.
Just a thought...

The range of audio levels coming out of the SQRX on SSB is difficult to
match to the FM transmitter. If you recall we've had problems with too
strong stations on SSB up causing the FM transmitters to behave poorly
and overdeviate. I can only imagine it would be 100 times worse on Field
Day. It's a good mode when everyone behaves though!

Hi Pop, VU2POP
I am very happy to know that AMSAT India plan to launch a new
satellite with 2 linear transponders in a higher orbit covering a
larger foot print in comparison of the actual VO-52
VO-52 continually operating with its linear transponders during all
available orbits is a reliable satellite for the amateur radio satellite
communications and as well for educational purposes.
Congratulations to Amsat India and to ISRO

Well after some frantic construction last night and this evening I have got
my old trusted Cushcraft 14810S and 719B mounted on a cross boom angled up
apprx. 30 degrees and tilted to 45 degrees between H and V.
I see from here ISS will be up in just a few minutes and SO-50 shortly
thereafter so going to give them a try to see if I can (A) hear them better
than before, and (B) Try to make my first ever satellite contact.
Well, here goes nothing. . .

Well as I should have expected my first attempt with the full size beam
antennas did not turn out as good as I had hoped but it gave me reference
point to work up from.
Never heard anything on ISS repeater, but did hear a few people on SO-50 but
still not good enough to make out any callsigns but signals were louder than
before.
One problem I found in tear down was that when my experimental antenna base
mount turned it changed the up-tilt angle of the antennas from above 30
degrees to the west to 10 degrees to the east so my aiming was less than
optimal as well as I was doing armstrong method for spinning them and had to
run from deck to antenna and back as well as trying to make a qso if possible.
Also experimentation base is only a 5 foot tall piece of mast, angles were
eyeballed, I was tired. . .
SO, I am hoping to get this setup somewhat perfected as I am getting the
itch to take this dog & pony show up to my Field Day site with me as it is
at 2600amsl so the horizon is almost always below me and should make for
interesting fun as evening come around since I am running the 10 meter
station and it will die early if the LEO's are active.
See you on the air soon. . .

Hi Pop,
Great news on ur ssb/cw satellite!!
FM users, find yourselves some real radios, and get in on the fun..
I see loads of them on the various used markets, and at good
prices...they don't have all the bells and whistles, but certainly usable...
And now another satellite available...
Continued successes, Pop....

Happy birthday to VO52 and congrats to the team for designing and
implimenting such a great satellite. VO52 doesn't get as much use as it
should in the USA, but it has an excellent downlink and is my favorite
linear satellite to use. I have a simple antenna (cushcraft A270-10S
dualband yagi) with no elevation and only horizontal polarization but I get
great signals from VO52 and have no problem making QSOs on it when others
are there. The doppler shift is fast but that is half the fun!
Heres to hoping it lasts as long as AO7!

I guess I've missed those passes you mentioned. The issues I've
heard working the cross-mode V/U passes tends to be centered
on stations aligning their uplink signals to be heard by the SQRX
receiver while compensating for Doppler. Even at 2m, that can be
a challenge with an uplink receiver that has filtering to pass - I
think - 4 kHz in SSB. Not the same as working FO-29 or HO-68
in SSB with the larger passbands.
It is interesting that an organization like AMSAT, one that is trying
to increase membership and raise funds for a new satellite, would
try to limit the usefulness of its prime satellite to a few dozen
stations (number based on WA4SCA's message from earlier today
regarding L/U activity during Field Day last year) during the busiest
on-air activity for hams across North America. Yes, V/U may
be chaotic, no matter if the uplink mode is FM or SSB for Field Day.
Work 20m SSB during Field Day, and that is also chaotic. We don't
try to have ARRL rule out using SSB or CW on 20m during that
weekend. Even V/U FM on AO-51 is a "good mode when everyone
behaves", ;-)
Again, just some thoughts and observations. It is good to see the
discussion about something related to satellite operation here on
the -BB. 73!

I have L band gear. When the bird is in L/U Luc and I have a great time
talking to each other. When the bird is in V/U I'll make half a dozen or
more contacts in a pass. I voted for mode L, because I didn't believe V/U
was an option and S band is becoming too full of interference.
I have a couple questions:
1. The folks who can't eek out a contact with the handheld and Arrow during
Field Day, have you practiced? It's how I have done it the last couple of
years without that much trouble, patience and timing are the keys :-). We
have a good Field Day location where I can see down to the horizon.
2. Has the single contact per FM bird rule really helped anyone? In the
old days a couple big stations got on and essentially ran the bird. Is it
fair? NO! but they handed out a lot of QSOs and we seemed to get more AMSAT
Field Day entries as well.
The one bird one contact has been a noble experiment, maybe it is time to
examine the results.
Hats off to the controllers for starting the discussion!

Keep in mind there will likely be three or four transponders birds, and
two to four other FM birds available that weekend!
It's been my perception that a good portion of AMSAT's sustaining
members leave and breathe the highest tech they can manage. Eight out of
eight satellites being V/U seems counter to that goal.
Mark and Bob both make good points supporting at least one area of
refuge for this portion of the AMSAT population. Personally, I think the
V/U FM experience on Field Day is a big turnoff to newbies, especially
since so many under-prepared, over-powered and out of practice
once-a-year sat ops fail miserably to get those bonus points on FM.
I bet someone in your area has 1.2 Ghz capability!

Has anyone tried one of the itfs mmds downconverters like this
one on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110523087399&ssPageName=STR
K:MEWNX:IT
for ao-51 s band downlink? 75 ohm out and looks cheesey but
less than $30 shipped. it's cheap enough for me to play so I
bought one to experiment with, maybe just to remove the
downconverter. I would welcome stories of your experience or
just advice.
Thanks

With a little more "push" is it possible to have just a slightly elliptical
orbit? I don't know what brand of batteries they put in VO-52
but they probably put a small pink rabbit in it as they don't seems to
bother too much with their power budget...
What's is funny is the commenting on the perf board model AMSAT-India was
showing couple of years before the launch of VO-52, some where
commenting on the jumper wire perf board modelling as if it was not
something who will never be able to work...
AMSAT-INDIA just doing an excellent and professional job on VO-52 they even
put 2 transponder in the same satellite "too strong never
broke". I'm convince their new orbit will cover quite some area on earth..
