Hope you're planning a few hamfest this year for AMSAT. Been to quite a few

Tim,

As usual, very informative information on "The Grand Land", AO-7! Tim you
remind me of only a few professional athletes who respect the game, know
it's history and play it "correctly". Well, AO-7 is like an aging athlete,
don't put to much pressure on her or ask her to do to much. I'm
disappointed in a few operators who don't understand or care what too much
power can do to a linear satellites passband, if this was HF everybody would
be doing it, thank you for teaching all of us Tim.

I wonder if a robot operator would make a 2-way QSO from the ISS using a ham

Hello friends,

Some friends wrote that the batteries of the AO-7 will not work. However
when analyzing the data made available by Mike in your web site I saw that
the results of telemetry for the voltage of the batteries and its load are
different in each decoding ...

I am convinced that the AO-7 is not in Mode C and would make an appeal to
all users of the "Grand Old Girl" using only QRP until your ready
reestablishment.

Thank you all for answers and guidance.

AO-7 is definitely having problems. On the last pass at 00:00 4/15/2010, I
worked a few stations. The bird was very busy, lots of signals.

My downlink was very strong, above normal, even after lowering my power down
almost all the way on my 910H. I heard heavy distortion on my downlink.

This was a very high pass for me, about 60 degrees.

Leo, W7JPI also confirmed the distortion problem (not just on my signal).
He mentioned that had been happening all day.

I heard a couple of stations using CW, which also sounded pretty bad.
Signals were up and down. Sometimes very strong, sometimes they seemed to
disappear.

Once the bird was out of eclipse, the signals were almost normal, but not
for the entire pass. I also worked W7LRD for a few seconds at 5 degrees.

Hello

Just got off AO-7, it really sounds not too good.? Weak and distorted
audio.? Like not enough voltage from the 35 year old solar cells.? Heard
eveything from response to a CME event to being in mode C to being hit by
whatever.? The audio distortion does not depend on the uplink power, it
sounds distorted weather I ran very minimum power or more.? I know we are
simply "blessed" to have this old bucket of bolts for our enjoyment.?
Perhaps some our experts on the bb can shed some of their expertise on
what's going on with this old bucket.

AO-7 is in sunlight 24/7 at the moment. If it was in eclipse you would
not hear anything at all. It is however riding the terminator for a good
portion of the orbit. I need to run some predictions and see when/if it
returns to eclipses this summer.

It's likely that the orientation is just poor right now, and not much
power is being generated by the panels to run the transponder. It would
be interesting to see if when signals are poor on the Mode B
transponder, is the 435 beacon on?

Hello to all the people in the list,

I would like to know if you use any special setting to work the HO-68 sat in
FM, because I have tried for to two days to enter in the satellite with no
success. I have an icom IC-910H, with the pl tone of 67 in the uplink but
there is no way to enter in the sat. I have tested to increase the power or
decrease and tried to follow the sat the best way possible with my yaesu
g-5500 and my X-Quad wimo antennas with no luck. Do you have any
recommendation?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Dear Folks,

I am attempting to get myself back on the satellites and am having some
problems with SatPC32.

Although WinAOS gives me accurate satellite position data, SatPC32 does not.
Furthermore satellite AOS/LOS data is different between the two programs,
sometimes by a half an hour.

I have checked all the settings and have tried updating the Keps but can't
seem to get the program to display accurate data.

Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know if there way around this
other than re-installing SatPC32? (I'd rather not have to input all the
settings again if I don't have to.)

Thanks

I'm with you Ed there are a lot of new satellite operators including my
self, that are willing to contact the ISS, I give them I try every once in a
while since I get my satellite station , and no success.

Hi Roger,

Some things to remember and then check: nearly each program in SatPC32
requires you to enter your lat/long (or grid square and it will calculate
lat/long) and desired time zone. Also, be sure that each program is
referring to the same Keplarian data (also in the setup).

So--when I hear that two different programs are giving different results---I
suspect that the programs are configured differently and/or using different
Keplarian data files. Give that a good close look first before
reinstalling...

Mark N8MH

Thank you for reading this.

Ten years ago I built a pair of circular polarised aerials primarily for
satellite use. The UHF aerial has 12 elements in each plane while the VHF
aerial has 6 elements in each plane. My UHF received signal strength often
seems to be below that of other stations and so I'm rethinking how I have
set up these aerials. The received signal strength via VO-52 is S7 at the
best, without a pre-amplifier, and so I'm happy with that. The UHF aerial is
where the problem is even thought they are set up in the same way.

Both aerials are mounted in an X orientation. One set of elements is a
quarter wave ahead of the other set. Because of the X mounting I cannot
tell if the vertical set is ahead of the horizontal set or not. Each aerial is
fed via a power splitter via equal length cables.

My question is; does this sound like a correctly set up right hand polarised
aerial? Originally I thought it was now I'm not sure.

Phil

Roger,

As Mark said, it is probably either a QTH or a KEPS issue. Most likely QTH,
since by default they look at the same keps. I keep ITrack around to break
the tie whenever there is a discrepancy with other programs. That tells me
where to look for the glitch. While not as detailed, the real time tracking
feature on the AMSAT-NA web site can provide some information.

Good luck,

Hi Fran EA1JM and All
?
Many things can be the cause
1-Check up your receiving setup ! listen to beacon before you? transmit? .
2- some time the sat not changed to ?FM mode (happened few time ) instead of
the schedule stats so.
3- check the beacon to see which mode is on.
4-AFC in downlink shift the frequency so fast ,so deactivate it until you
hook with
strong down link signal.
5-Never Try to work FM satellite in IC-910 sat-mode .
IMHO IC-910 sat mode is perfect only for Xponder satellite.
6- check volume level! and check if the tone on the VHF and not on
UHF.(common mistake to mix uplink tone with downlink tone)

7-Check Main and Sub External speaker setting combination

Hope this help!

Hi Phil

Since one set of elements is a quarter wave ahead of the other and each
aerial is fed via a power splitter via equal lenght of coax cable then your
antenna is circularly polarized.

Depending to which side of each dipole you have connected the inner
conductor and the braid of the coax cable the polarization can be RHCP
or LHCP

If you remember how the inner conductors and the braid of coax cables are
connected the the rear dipole and to the front dipole it is possible to
determine if the polarization is RHCP or LHCP

By the way for general information if you add a 1/2 electrical waveleght of
coax cable to the fed line suppliyng the front dipole than the sense of
polarization reverses from RHCP to LHCP or vice versa.

In a separate email I have sent to you a drawing showing how both linear
polarized fields components of your antennas adds to generate a resultant
circularly polarized wave.

Since the drawing is made using two crossed driving elements one vertical
and the other horizontal you only must ideally rotate the drawing right hend
or left hend by 45 degrees and nothing changes in your reasoning.

By the way your antenna is circularly polarized for sure but without to make
the above analisys it is impossible to say if RHCP or LHCP

Have fun

Hello

Should I be so lucky as to connect with Arecib o this weekend, what is the
proper protocol for a QSO?
