is a low pass (1 deg) "over" Hawaii extending
to the western boundary of those states
bordoring the Mississippi to the west. 51

27 may be rought but I will give it a try if
anyone is interested in the attempt.

Folks, It was a worth a short on todays' 15:38 UTC AO7 Pass but no Joy!

Unfortunately we have had heavy winds in excess of 30 to 40 mph gusting to
50mph. The static levels on 2m receive are very high and I could barely hear
a few voices on the satellite. The only station I could barely make out was
KC7MG. I was looking for K8YSE, WD9EWK and several others, but I just could
not hear my own downlink. Strange because the day before I had pass all to
myself over the Pacific and I had all the SatPC setting correct and ready to
go for this pass. I could hear myself perfectly.

I also was pointing my antenna straight at a big rain cloud in the path of
the satellite and I am sure that did not help matters with the signal or the
QRN on 2m.

Sorry it was worth the try but tropical conditions are causing some
interesting attenuation and noise on AO7 and VU52 downlinks. FO-29 and
HO68 on the other work like a charm I can work those with 5 W and my Elk
antenna with no trouble. One could probably turn down the power even more
and get into those satellites without any difficulty.

Diving got canceled due to bad weather. I will take a look what I can still
work this afternoon. I will be out of dinner which means I can't make the
FO-29 passes at 03:26 or 05:07 UTC. Sorry. Last day here and I need to take
out my significant other to keep her happy.

Aloha from windy Kauai.

73, Adrian AA5UK/KH6

You have a good woman there, Adrian, for letting you 'play radio' while on
holidays. Mine only tolerates it somewhat. I do know that those folks who
did finally got to make contacts with you really appreciate your efforts and
all, taking away time from you and your xyl's time in the tropical, but wet
islands. Too bad the weather was not in your favor for some of it. Have a
safe trip home and again, thanks for the qso.

Hi All,

AO-51 was changed a bit early today, at 21:10 UTC 4 April. It is currently
in "normal mode", with 435.300 (145.920 uplink) running about 480 mW (and
435.150 running about the same). We hope to catch up on some telemetry
during this week. If we don't need any telemetry, it is likely that we'll
increase the power on 435.300. The schedule for the rest of the month should
be posted soon--sorry for the delay.

Beginning with May 2nd, periods of eclipse return to AO-51. We'll have to
watch the satellite carefully and make some modifications to what we've been
doing over the last several months. More details as we get closer to the
eclipses...

73,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

I think W6SP was active from there in Oscar 7 or perhaps OScar 6 days. I
heard him talk of being able to work many passes a day as that is near the
pole. I am not sure when you activated it, so I don't know if you were
earlier or not.

James, KK6MC and Ron, W6QZ have both mentioned John Browning, W6SP (SK)
as working satellites from Thule. Does anyone have more information on
his operation from here?

All my time in Kauai is rapidly coming to end.

Here are the last passes I will to to get on today:

April 5:
AO-51 02:05 UTC
VO-52 06:28 UTC
FO-29 06:53 UTC.

I am sorry I cannot make the FO-29 passes at 03:26 and 05:07. I will be out
for the evening for a last dinner.

Thanks again for the great contacts and effort to work me under difficult
wind, rain and static noise conditions.

Tomorrow I will be heading back to Oahu for a couple of days. More than
likely I will not be operating as there are mountains to the North and many
hotels blocking possible the path to the satellites.

Aloha from Kauai.

73, Adrian AA5UK/KH6

I worked OX3DB on AO-13 on 5th Jan 1990.
The card says the operator was Jan Nielson and his QTH
was Nuuk (Godthab) on South West Coast.

Hi folks,

Since starting my effort to work Europe on AO-7, I've found that the very
low elevation sigs vary significantly on different
passes.? Some mornings I can easily hear my downlink and start working
Europe at 0.7 degrees elevation, while other days I can't hear myself
until 5 degrees elevation, after the window to Europe has closed.? Not
sure if this is due to band conditions, satellite polarization,
obstructions at certain positions, operator error, local noise, or what.

Today I spoke with another experienced AO-7 op and he had an interesting
theory: on the bad days (when I don't hear my downlink until 5 degress), the
sat is in Mode C (lower power).? This seems to make sense, because there
does not seem to be any middle ground -- I start hearing my downlink at
either 0.7 degrees or 5 degrees, never at 2-4 degrees.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?? Are we able to predict when the sat will
be in one mode or another?? Or any other explanation for the signal strength
variations?

73, Bill NZ5N

Memories!!!

I'm in the 500 club I think it was called, got to 930 or so and stop

I decided to go out from the city on an open field of wheat that is no
longer in use, It was me and my son Kevin KJ6DDS, I just worked some
stations on AO-27 pass at 2045z, and I let Kevin use the station for the
last half of the pass, he was so exited he worked seven different station
and a new record for him, after we finish load the station we went back home
and picked up the rest of the family and hit food 4 less, we were
just across the cash register when a terrible 7.2 earthquake shake DM22 it
lasted for about 2 to 3 minutes, it was people running all over the parking
lot and cars speeding up, no power and no signals on the streets and when we
arrived home all people were outside. after that and by the time I'm writing
this message there has been 162 more ranging from 2.7 to 5.1, and they has
been more then 200 on the whole day. we got our power back but we think we
are not sleeping tonight, I talk to all my friends here over our local EOC
freq and everyone is ok, our death toll is only two people and around 100
injured, which is nothing compared with Haiti, we have several material
damages but we hope to recover soon.

73 to all and hope to catch you on the sats soon!!!!
