What an interesting question! As many of you know, I'm having fun
porting the G3RUH's Plan13 algorithm to the Atmel platform. One of the
first things you want to be able to do in programs like this is to
convert degrees to radians; and that means pi.

In the appropriate header pi is defined thus:
#define M_PI 3.141592653589793238462643
But I use 4-bit precision floating values. (This platform *can* use
8-bit, but because it is Harvard architecture, I come pretty close to
killing my stack if I do 8-bit math with the 2kB SRAM.)
With this ruby oneliner, I can see the resulting bytes:
>> [3.141592653589793238462643]].pack("f").each_byte {|c| print c.to_s(16),
' '}
db f 49 40
(This is using the ruby command-line interpreter 'irb').
By paring off numbers from the end, I can see that the my code is
actually using roughly the following decimal value:
3.14159265

The resulting accuracy can be attested in this (previously posted)
video, beginning at about 1:30
http://www.youtube.com/user/VE9QRP#p/a/u/0/TP_fq_frqKw

Here's something people might not know about the letter pi. It is
closely related in ancient Greek to the letter 'phi'. While, we (at
least the Western European 'we') pronounce phi as an 'ffff', in
ancient Greek it was a 'p' sound with a bit of a puff of air after it,
'p' + 'huh'. There was a similar relationship in Greek between kappa
and chi.

From memory, I believe the advantage that fractal antennas provide
is very wide bandwidth and reduced size for performance. Desirable
characteristics for hand-held communications. But as far as
radiation efficiency???

Hi Nader and all,

yes, I saw you and other stations on my WISP screen (e.g. DL8DR and SP8CGR)

Since only 2 European and 2 Russian stations were calling CQ. The many other
usual stations were not active.

I think this is a really good result.

Thanks for your fairness and your tolerance for other modes!

To my AMSAT friends........as some already know, I am having to move from
this QTH, where I had unrestricted antenna locations, but, having to move
into a fairly new subdivision , I dont have the room for these antennas.
Looks like I am going to be restricted on an Arrow on a RS Tripod at 6 ft.
Anyway, I have these older KLM Cross Polarized yagi's with Polarity
Switchers, the 2M-14CP and 435-18CP at the unbelievable price of $100 !! I
paid $200 for them last year. One stipulation though.....ah ha, here it
comes........you have to pick them up, no shipping, ASAP . The 2M can be
broken down into 3 sections and the 435 into 2, so a pickup can haul them. I
live South of Fresno, in the middle of California (sorry)... These yagi's
have been working well for me at an height of 15 ft above ground and the
Polarity Switching works great, especially on FO-29.

If you or you know of anyone looking for a great setup for the birds,
contact me ASAP , so we can set time/date. Attached is a picture of them in
the air........sorry, the AZ/EL system doesnt go with it...

Hi,

Some time in the dim past, I bought a Mirage/KLM APS-1 Antenna Polarity
Switcher from a local ham who bought a nice 1990 vintage satellite station
but never got on the air. They were designed to switch the antenna
circularity of KLM satellite antennas, plus provides a regulated DC output,
5-13 volts. Should work fine the an M2. The front has two push buttons
labeled 144 and 432 and a power switch/voltage knob. The back has two phono
jacks for the circularity, and two terminal jacks for the adjustable power.
It uses a wall wart with a standard 2.1 mm jack. The input power is 11-15
volts DC @ 500 ma.

It is over 20 years old, but truly looks new, with no scratches or dents.
The original parts list and instruction sheet are also included. The
original wall wart is NOT included, but there is a compatible one included
if desired. Pictures and a copy of the instruction sheet available on
request. This works perfectly, but is more of a vintage gear item.

$25 firm, including shipping, North America. Please contact me off list.

Not currently. It's only operational when scheduled, like HO-68, and is
currently on hiatus until they finish commissioning the primary payloads
(which isn't us!). Last I heard they expected to be back with us

Thank you for reading this.

I'm trying to devise an equation to correct the rotation of my non linear
rotator. It's correct in the middle of its range but out at both ends of its
travel. I asked this same question ten years ago and someone kindly told me
about a simple Window application that did exactly want I wanted.

I have searched through my e-mails back to 2000 and cannot find the reply.
Can anyone, once again, suggest a suitable Windows or a Linux application?

Yeah, Ancient Greek is an interesting language. Modern Greek too. We
native English speakers get taught the "Greek alphabet" in our math and
physics classes, and most of the letters are pronounced all wrong for Modern
Greek.

For example, all the letters ending in "eye" (Pi, Xi, Phi, etc) are
pronounced in Greek ending in "eee". So, Pi is not a big round thing with
fruit in a crust, but rather "Pea", the small orb-like vegetable. Sorry,
Pi-day folks. You're baking the wrong food.

To make things worse, the letter that looks like a "B" (beta) is not a "bee"
sound, but rather it's a Vee. Veeta, like the cheese. The "v"-looking
letter sounds like an "n". The "n" letter is actually an "eee" sound. The
"e" looking letter is, oddly enough, pronounced like an "eee", one of 6
"eee"s, counting some double-letter combinations. I don't recall any long-I
sounds at all, come to think of it.

And they say English is hard to learn...

The best summaries I've found are here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSpbpOtF9qI and
here: http://greekfood.about.com/od/glossary/a/alphabet.htm

I'm having trouble [re]installing satpc32. For reason I don't know,
satpc32 began could not open configuration files it needed upon
startup. Thus would not start.

So I uninstalled satpc32 and am trying to reinstall it. Setup gets part
way through the install and then issues error message #1925:
insufficient privileges to install for all users. This terminates the
install.

What should I do? I am logged in as "Admin" or as my personal account
which also has admin privilege. Same thing happens both ways.

My computer has Windows 7.

Hi Larry,
to run the setup program under Windows 7 right click on the file name
"Setup". In the list that opens choose the option "Run as administrator".
