Anybody know for sure if an Elk antenna is an acceptable carry on luggage
item? Disassembled, and rolled up in a bag, for example.
Or am I going to have to check it in?

As long as it fits inside your regulation size carry on bag.

THANK YOU all for the public and private messages on this topic! A
compilation of your suggestions -
>> ... Henk, PA3GUO ... [several Web sites cited] ...
Henk - those are all excellent reference sites. Beyond what I am doing "now"
with my quest to get new folks into working the birds - but I have added
them all to my personal bookmarks, and will recommend to more "seasoned" sat
communicators.
>> ... a link to the AO-27 Java schedule lister site ...
That's a great little utility! I *do* have links to the control team and
official status pages of the "easy" birds. And I tell folks to bookmark 'em
al, and refer to them regularly for updates. But I will mention this app in
my presentations for more "advanced" communicators.
>> ... Proper satellite names, not these senseless ZO-99 type designations ...
A tough one. Yes, the proper nomenclature and history of the topic is
important (remember my "Is the "O" in OSCAR "orbital" or "orbiting?"
discussion last year? 'Cause I can cite for you about as many mentions of
either in literature ... ). But I want entry-level folks to get info quickly
and easily - and the tracking software and Web tracking sources seem to
have "dumbed-down" to the abbreviated designators.
>> ... Maintain current email address on QRZ.com ...
I demonstrated the importance of this last night during my presentation at
the Los Angeles Maritime Museum K6AA group - I wanted to email a contact in
Central CA, but his email address was not posted on QRZ.com. I asked the
group - most of whom do maintain their listings on QRZ - if they have ever
felt that their posted info on QRZ caused them any grief (spam). No one
replied that they had. I am sure I can find his email address via Google
search (and i did - I found him to be a board member of his local club). But
until I hear that QRZ has sold out and was responsible for spammers to
access and mis-use their data, I think it is a good source for us to be able
to reference.
>> ... You need to be able to hear the satellite before transmitting!
Of course, already stressed the importance of this during demos,
presentations, and in my tutorial.
THANK YOU ALL for your input.

SpaceTrack, where we should be encouraging people to get keps from, only use
the full proper names.
It's only the likes of Amsat, ARRL etc that replace them with the
abbreviated designations. Tracking software uses
whatever designation is in the keps.

When have you last done this Nigel? Thats a good way to loose a
not-so-cheap antenna at the whim of a TSA flunkie. Check it Mark. I've
had to re-check an arrow, and had to get a supervisor to allow my AL-800
through inspection.

Furthermore, Spacetrack actually has several names of older satellites
wrong. Sometimes those names are confusing too. I sure loved working
Informator-1 and still like using Eyesat and Saudisat-1c. I wonder when
Techsat-B will be back on the air?

Hello Colin,
Thanks so much for the information. I am sure it has something to do with
the frequency turning. Next time the bbs in up, I will try it again.
As for the deviation, I have use this same rig and tnc with GO-32 and AO-51
when it was in V/U mode. The deviation seems to be fine. I will listen
again and verify this with my HT. Service monitor is not available. Lost it
in Katrina.
I really miss using the bbs. Love to download the pictures and talking
with friends around the world.
Anyhow, thanks again for the tips.

The only time I've had to opportunity to take my handheld station along on a
trip that required air travel, I didn't even try to carry on my antenna. I
checked it, and carried on my HTs, spare batteries and an AL-800. I flew
into International Falls, MN, from Atlanta. TSA in Atlanta breezed me
through security on the way north. On the way home, however, TSA in
International Falls totally unpacked my carry-on to inspect every
radio-related item I had.
Mark, I think you'll be OK checking your Elk. I'll do it the next time I fly.
73 to all,
Tim - N3TL

Mark,
I would NOT bet on it. I gave the tech test to a couple of TSA agents two
weeks ago.
I can call them and see what they say. Anything that you could stick
someone with is
probably a no no.
Have fun next month in EL84,

I got approved without further question and I was living in another country.
You just fill in the form and e-mail it.
Given a new bird, Space Track has the keps a couple of weeks before Amsat
bothers to include them and has much more choice.
Whilst I agree that there are more friendly places to get them from, lets at
least try to encourage people to help
themselves and not rely on some other agency to obtain, sanitize and
distribute keps for them.

You have gotten several answers, already. The rule is one bag that
will fit in overhead or under seat plus a personal carryon. I would
guess your Elk is probably too long to qualify for fitting in the
overhead. Check it inside a hard tube or box.
I have flown with ham gear several times since 9-11 (one, two
times/year) and never had any notice by TSA agents in Anchorage,
Seattle, Minneapolis, Detroit, Cincinatti, Atlanta, Dallas-FW,
Ontario-CA, and maybe others. I have taken a FT-817, keypad mic, 45w
linear, mag-mt whip, DC cord for cigarette lighter, coax cables in my
carryon suitcase with my clothes.
MY wife got the royal full open your suitcase turn your pockets
insideout because she forgot about her small pen size jackknife on
her key ring.
I have not tried taking my Arrow since 9-11. I use to carry it on in
a 2 x 25 inch pvc tube with caps. I suspect they figured it to be my
fishing pole.

Hi Mark,
Stick it in your suitcase and it will be fine,
Last time I was in the USA on business I brought one back home to VK
with it stuck diagonally across in my suitcase and I had no problems
with customs etc.

I'll soon be flying. I have made one of those Tape Measure antennas
http://home.att.net/~jleggio/projects/rdf/tape_bm.htm
<http://home.att.net/%7Ejleggio/projects/rdf/tape_bm.htm> just for the
trip. IMO, it works as well as an Elk. It certainly is easier to fit in
the luggage. I'll even keep my Pryme Al-800 in the luggage but I will
take my Smiley antenna with my radios on board. Simply, in the worst
case, the Smiley can also be used for LEO satellites.
The Tape Measure antenna is easy to put together, the way I made it, all
parts are held by the coax, so none will get lost.

Hi Mark,
Tks for the note and the QSO today. My XYL and I have already penned in
tomorrow for looking around across the border. We don't know what time we'll
cross back, but I wasn't planning on doing any sat ops on Sunday.
Meanwhile, AO27 and SO50 will do just fine while AO51 is in V/S mode.
Tks for the heads up though, and especially for the continued ops support!

Hi Jim,
The AO-51-Modes team has enjoyed supporting your Grid-xpedition!
It is likely that the V/S mode change will not occur on Sunday evening, but
ather on Monday morning or Monday evening (due to command station schedules).
o, you might get an extra few passes, if that is of benefit.
73! Keep up the great work, and travel safely.
On behalf of the AO-51 Command Team,
Mark N8MH
