I don't have experience with 3rd party controllers but the position
reporting is fundamentally different. Instead of potentiometers
indicating the present az/el, there are just pulses indicating when the
motors have traveled a degree.

So a little more work is associated with keeping track of the heading,
and I haven't heard of a compatible 3rd party controller, but I don't
foresee modifying one to do so as particularly challenging.

Hi,

A problem that I've had for many years is how to track when the
satellite's azimuth crosses across the rotator's end-stop,  ie. when the
azimuth changes from 0 to 359 degrees.

My rotator turns between 0 and 450 degrees, so it should be possible to
use  angles between  360  and 450  to  overcome a sudden  transition
from  0 to 360 degrees.

As the pass data is  available within the tracking program, it should be
feasible to deal with the problem in the program.   Do any tracking
programs include this feature?

A possible solution would be to use a small PIC between the computer and
tracker, which could modify the commanded azimuth.

I'm using a Yaseu 5500, LVB tracker, Sat_Explorer tracking program and
WinXP.

Any help,  suggestions or comments would be most welcome.

If you're running Windows, this won't help you, but MacDoppler does
this easily, and without operator intervention.  I'm using the same
equipment you are, but with a MacBook Pro laptop, and it works
beautifully.

Dave is correct about MacDoppler, it works a treat.

What Don (the writer on MD) and I do for GENSO is set a rotator dead
spot and indicate to the software that it should allow the
elevation to flip the rotators 180 degrees before the pass. The
prediction algorithm then knows that if the azimuth passes through the
dead spot during the predition, it should flip the rotators beforehand
and output the adjusted azimuth position.

I'm sure that some of the windows trackers do this.

AFAIK none of the existing programs allow for the 450 degree rotation.

Hi Dave,

A user of the LVB Tracker, SatPC32, and a Yaseu G-5500 *can* do 450 AZ
and 180 EL if they choose to.  It's all configurable.  The LVB Tracker
must be calibrated with either 360 or 450 for azimuth , and either 90
or 180 for elevation.  From there, the operator just has to make sure
the SatPC32 rotor setup "matches."   Users can pick and choose
whatever combination matches their station needs or desires (450/90,
360/180, 450/180, 360/90).

I tend to use 90 deg because it's simpler from a "coax hanging"
perspective.  And I also use 360; in my hands, the 450 seems to "lack
linearity" if that makes sense.    By that I mean, if I calibrate to
450, it's like 360 isn't quite really 360....   So, I just use 360 and
it's fine.

Flex is fully aware that the price of the V/U + the 5000 will limit the
sales of the V/U. For those already owning the 5000, the V/U together as
two sixty watt units with high performance and fully capable of full
duplex operation, and is CHEAPER than the same system assembled from
DEMI units. Now, you have to already have the 5000 to plug it in so it
is limited to the 5000.

The Flex equipment is fully capable of supporting external digital
programs and CAT. Both of these are supported via "virtual connections".
A pseudo sound card is set up and other programs connect to the pseudo
sound card to deliver audio to/from the radio. The same thing for CAT
control: a pseudo com port pair is set up, one at the radio and one at
the controlling program, to support control of the radio via CAT
commands. The radio has its own set of commands but implements Kenwood
commands as well.

I have the USB version of the LVB tracker and the latest model Kenpro
(5400A) with the relay control lines brought out to the plug. The LVB
plugs into that plug directly. This is good. I should have remembered
this because Brooks developed the KCT Tracker and Tuner with the
interface to Quiktrak at the beginning of our friendship. I used both to
command the Microsat's in the first days, I should have remembered and
should have realized that the plugin interface probably became a
standard when Kenpro did and Yaesu maintained it in the B model.

I sent you the following message off the list but my mail was returned by

SatPC32 supports the 450? range of the G-5500 (to avoid a full turn of the
azimut rotor when  the satellite passes your location in the North).
You can choose the 450?  in the menu "Rotor Setup". To make the option
available the max. elevation must be set to 90? and the rotor turning point
must be set to "N" (for
North).

The Endeavour is carrying a lot to the ISS, including the last module -
Tranquility - the 21-foot-long, 14-foot-wide module that will be mounted to
Unity, facing Earth. Tranquility includes an attachment called Cupola - a

In that famous photo of the entire payload of satellites that included AO-51
(where AO-51 is at about at the 6:30 position - with that largee Italian
engineering bird to its left), there's another satellite at about 02:30 that
looks exactly like AO-51 (size and visible panels are alike).

Whose satellite is that?

It was too cold to get out of bed at 4:30 am est today to see the shuttle
launch.

So here are some pictures of a Night Shuttle Launch, taken from Boston area
on March 15, 2009.

This is what the engines would have looked like for those of you that stayed
in bed like i did.
