Thanks, Andras, for this information. My original post was probably
not clear enough. I was looking for a way to get the signal-to-noise
and highest-volume-frequency *data* from an audio stream, like the
data that appears in on the screen in spectran.

For my micro-controller-based doppler tuning project, I'm trying to
work out formulas for deriving transponder uplink frequencies from
those of the downlink. (Davidoff (1998) is a bit less generous on this
topic than on others.) I created a posting on my blog which outlines
the math I've come up with so far. I'd be grateful if the members of
this list wanted to look it over and offer their wisdom and criticism:

Hyperterm PE version 6.3, which was a modest upgrade to the version shipped
with XP, is still available from various download sites. Hilgraeve has
started work on it again after an 8 year lapse, but they are charging for
the new versions. Google "Hyperterm PE 6.3" and numerous sites will come
up. Note that some make it sound as if it is a trial version, but if it is
version 6.3, it is a full version.

The trick about pulling off the EXE and DLL files is widely reported, but
can be iffy. A friend was looking for a terminal program to distribute on a
CD along with some other stuff for an APRS project. He took my suggestion
to do that, as it worked on my machines. However, some but not all Vista
machines choked on it with protection errors. The ones they tested when
they did the install worked fine, but that is not what they were looking
for. After some additional research, they went with PUTTY, which worked
fine.

Charlie,

I ran across the following info that looks interesting. 73 de Andy W5ACM

While Hyperterminal shipped with Windows XP, it however did not ship with
Windows Vista (Boo Microsoft, Boo!). However that doesn't mean that you
can't
use it. What you can do is rip the following files from a Windows XP disc or
installation;

hypertrm.dll

hypertrm.exe

Now all you need to do is place them anywhere in your Vista directory and
link the shortcut to

hypertrm.exe. Now you can launch it and it will first ask for Zip code and
state. Afterwards you can being to use Hyperterminal as usaual. If you don't
have a copy of Windows XP handy, you can download the file's I've ripped and
use it as well;

http://www.keithdmitchell.com/Downloads/hyperterminal_vista.zip

Side note, although I am using the Windows 7 RC1, I do see a placeslot of
Hyperterminal, but no application for it. You'll be happy to know that this
also will work for Windows 7 as well - *note, this works for 32/64bit Vista
and Windows 7!*

I am looking for a FREE Terminal Emulator app. as Win7 64 does not
include it as it did with XP. I want it to communicate with the LVB Tracker.
Can any one recommend one?

Thanks

Hi Nader

I saw your question last week, and the response that said the messages will
stay for 5 days. But I wonder if the messages are lost when the BBS is
switched? off??
Perhaps there is a timer to remove them after 5 days if it's left running.?
But at present I don't recall seeing any message lasting more than an?
orbit.

Thanks

My XYL and I are spending a few days in the Denver area. We'll likely resume
our trip and head south on Friday, 5 Feb.
Today (2 Feb), we're heading up to Cheyenne, WY (DN71) to visit family.
Along the way, we're stopping off at the Arrow Antenna shop. I'll be on from
there on the AO27 pass that rises here around 02/1938Z.

To make sure everyone understands this list, this is HO-68 transmitting.
Not any uplink stations. As you see, all listed below are TO stations. It
is
responding to BBS request.

A lot of the transmission are saying the BBS directory is empty. So, when
sharing a frequency with voice, the TNC on the satellite buffers the data
and
does a burst of buffered data when frequency is clear. So, if voice takes
more air time, the more buffered information is transmitted at one time.

This pass was quite the combination of voice and packet
traffic. KL4E was on from BP51 Eagle River AK at the end.
N7HYF in DN52 WY also made an appearance.

Below is the packet traffic I copied. The date/time stamps
were inserted by the TNC to show when they were received. At
times the traffic was intense.

Hello all,

I am interested in purchasing a functioning Paccomm Spirit-2 TNC. I
prefer the satellite model (with 38k4), but will consider the
non-satellite model as well.

Anyone wishing to sell such a unit can please reply directly to me:

Thanks,

I cannot find it but a recent post on EU-AMSAT group says it was normal as
the messages stays 5 days in the DIR and are erased after by the

Can anyone point me to the recommended TNC for adding to an FT-847 for
digital satellite work? Are there special modifications needed? What
connector does it use on the FT-847?

Thanks,
Mike

Has anyone been able to confirm if the PACSAT style BBS has
digipeat enabled liike it is on AO-51? This enables real-time
low-dutycycle keyboard comms within the footprint.

I cannot email the chinese operators directly to ask this
question, because our system is blocked from overseas access.

I can't speak to any specific "recommended TNC", but I've been using my
old PacComm Tiny-2 MK2 for years. It uses a 5-pin DIN (think ancient
AT-style keyboard connector) and I connected it the packet port on my
FT-847 (6-pin mini-din, like the slightly newer PS/2 keyboards) and have
copied the ISS using this. The connections were fairly trivial to make
following the manuals for the radio and TNC.

Years ago I used the same TNC with my old radio shack HTX-242 to post
messages to the BBS on the Mir.

With a different TNC, I could also do 9600, but I don't have that
capability at the moment. I'd think most any TNC should work.

Hi Mike,

You probably should specify which type of packet you are interested in
working; an answer to your question depends on that.

For 1200 baud packet, you can use just about anything, including some
software solutions (MixW, for example). Or, one of many MFJ TNCs you
find at hamsfest or on eBay.

For 9600 baud packet, you'll need to be more careful in your search.
For 38k4, you need to be even MORE selective, as there aren't many.

If you want a TNC that does all three--1200, 9600, and 38k4-- you
might consider a KPC-9612+ TNC. Never owned one myself, so I can't
comment.

For 9600 and 38k4, my personal choice is the Paccomm Spirit-2 satellite model.

I've never owned or operated the FT-847, so I can't comment on that
part of your question, either. But one thing's for sure--38k4 packet
requires modification of any radio currently in (or out!) of
production (well, except for the Icom PCR-1500/2500).

Mark N8MH

Hi,

Just something I noticed on the 1845 Ho-68 pass. For 2 days I have been
trying to download the directory without success. I uploaded 3 files
now, but still couldn't get the directory.
I then switched to voice mode with PL=67 Hz, and then tried again
and the directory came screaming down.
Very odd indeed.

There are some screen shots here.
