Hello Satellite Friends,
I'm very sorry to pass along the information below
about my dear friend Jim, W6ASL. Many of you may
have worked Jim as he was quite active on the birds,
using his indoor antenna setup.
I met Jim through the microwaves and will never forget
the 10 GHz QSO with him from Mt Shasta to his back yard (CM87).

de KB8VAO, Steve
RIP Jim W6ASL(sk)

Subject: [Sbms] Jim, W6ASL

I am sorry to pass along this information from
Jim Von Striver's daughter. Jim, W6ASL after a
short illness battling emphysema and pneumonia
passed away on Friday January 15, 2010.
Services are pending.

Jim was a true friend, a nice guy and always a gentleman.
He will be missed by many friends and family.

For those who are still dreaming for a HEO in the mean time just check
below you can have your own LEO/tube sat satellite for 8000$ launch
included payable with the major credit card and you even have payment
options!

I'm just waiting to see one of them on E-Bay

As they said "TubeSats are designed to be orbit-friendly. Launches are
expected to begin in December of 2010." Probably the replacing
solution for our aging AMSAT-NA satellite fleet? Anyone with 8000$ can own
his own satellite let me guess in a couple of years the same
repeater frenzy will also reach the amateur satellite world. No more need of
club or organization or IARU frequencies coordination .
The perfect world...

In the ongoing "discussion" about the new mailing list policy (kudos to the
BoD by the way), the "Life Member" label has been at the forefront as though
this adds gravitas to the opinion of the commenter.

Since we are going down that path, I just wanted you to know that when I
read "Life Member" I hear the words "cheap", "discount", "looking for a
deal", "old fart" in my head.

The fact that you paid a hugely discounted price twenty-five years ago for a
"life" membership and now lean heavily on that previous investment to
denigrate the organization makes your opinion considerably less valuable to
me than had you paid the "full freight" for those same years.

I realize it can be painful to discover that others have opinions too, but
if I have to read this constant drivel then you must read mine. I've been a
member since 1994 and have always paid the full membership fare, each and
every year.

In addition to President Club membership and associated donations...

So there!

What have YOU done for the hobby lately?

Jeff, KE9V

WOW! Bob, where was the satellite at the time? Over the North Pole? North
Atlantic? Eastern Canada?
