Anyone planning on attending the week-long Quartzfest 2010 hamfest
(http://www.quartzfest.org) near Quartzsite, Arizona next week? I'll be
there Jan 15-23. If any other sat operators plan to be there maybe we could
meet up. I know there's usually a good turn-out from W6-land.

I'll be operating the FM birds from DM23vn throughout next week. If anyone
needs that grid square and works me just an email to 'my call' at amsat.org
and I'll mail you a QSL card if you're in my log.

Tom, K?TW

I have a weird one. I'm trying to help another ham out.

He has an FT-847 running SatPC32. He's trying to get Doppler correction
working.

SatPC32ISS works fine. The radio tunes as it should.

SatPC32 does not tune. When he hits C+, the radio will go into Sat mode and
preset the freqs, but when the satellite is in view, the radio doesn't tune.

He can manually tune the radio with the up/dwn button on screen.

Ideas?

Howard,

There is a typo in the last line:

LSB.REV >> LSB,REV

I don't know in detail how SATPC32 parses the Doppler file. This probably
isn't the source of your problem, but it needs fixing. Then restart SATPC32
with your fingers crossed. ;)

Does it matter if you rearrange the 3 lines so the default mode changes?

Drew,

You might check with the SEDS team at the University of Arizona.

It has been a few years since I collected any data from the satellite. At
that time the batteries were not healthily. Thus, the transmitter was not
active all the time. It could go days/weeks before you heard it. I would
have to check my logs, but I am guessing it was the 2003-2004 time frame
when I last actively collected data from it. It was about that time I took
my antennas down.

Hi!

Sorry for the delay in posting this report. Between fighting off
a cold and spending much of the weekend at work, I am getting
caught up with things like this.

The WestFest hamfest in Glendale AZ, a west-side suburb of Phoenix,
is the only indoor hamfest in the Phoenix area. Ever since it became
an indoor event, it has been popular. The ThunderBird Amateur Radio
Club, sponsor of this hamfest, has been gracious in providing a free
space for AMSAT at their hamfests for the past few years. I have done
presentations and demonstrations at 3 different club meetings over the
past 3 years, so I looked forward to the hamfest on Saturday morning.

I was still setting up my table when the first AO-51 pass came by in
the 1300 UTC hour, and I was talking to a bunch of hams through the
second AO-51 pass. I did go outside and work the first VO-52 pass to
the east around 1600 UTC. I heard WA4HFN in Tennessee clearly, but
he had issues hearing my callsign. Jim KE4KOL also worked me on that
pass, where I had my FT-817s in a duffel bag to illustrate the
portable nature of my gear.

I was outside for an SO-67 pass after this, but nothing was heard. I
thought that there might have been an issue with my setup, until I saw
KD5QGR's status page and AA5PK's report that he also didn't hear the
satellite. So I went outside to work the SO-50 pass around 1800 UTC,
near the end of the hamfest. This was the most productive pass, and
thanks to all the stations that called me.

I have to tell a quick story... Norm WV7K, a local ham who used to be
very active on the satellites, stopped by my table at the hamfest in
Mesa AZ last month with his son David. David got his license a few
months ago (KF7DRQ), and appeared to be interested in satellites.
Norm still has lots of his satellite gear, but they both were
interested in my demonstrations. We talked a bit at that hamfest,
and I gave them copies of a flyer to get started on the FM satellites.
Fast forward a few weeks to last Saturday, and they were both at this
hamfest. David had an HT, and needed an antenna to try the satellites.
A vendor had Arrow antennas, and Norm had a diplexer at home that could
be used with the dual-band Yagi. They bought the Yagi, saw my SO-50
demonstration at 1800 UTC, and a few hours later David made his first
satellite QSO using his HT and new Yagi on AO-51 with K4YYL in South
Carolina.

I apologize if anyone was looking for me on the passes I did not show
up on. Even with trying for 3 passes and working 2 of them, the
demonstrations were well received. The SO-67 pass where we heard no
downlink signals was also a good time with lots of questions and
answers for the crowd that followed me outside. As always, thanks to
all who called me during those other two passes, especially mentioning
your location along with your callsigns and grids to better illustrate
the coverage of these satellites.

73!

Mike,
the automatic Doppler correction of SatPC32 updates the radio frequencies
(only) when the Doppler shift of the higher one of both frequencies has
changed by a certain amount of Hertz (interval).
Your friend may try the following:
a. Select AO-51 as satellite (mode v/u = uplink on VHF, downlink on UHF),
regardless whether it is in range or not.
b. Set the FM interval in menu CAT to - say - 20 (default is 600),
c. Watch the changes of the Doppler shift of the UHF downlink.
d. Whenever the changes exceed 20 the program should update both radio
frequencies.

Does that work?

Control C must be C+, of course.

He should set the CAT baud rate to 57600 in SatPC32 (upper combo box in menu
"Radio Setup") and at the radio (menu #37), the CAT delay should be 20. For
detailed instructions he should read the "Hints for .... Yaesu users". The
text can be displayed from the SatPC32 menu "?", "Hints (Radio) for...."

Howard,
I tested that with the FT-817 as "Radio 1" and the FT-847 as "Radio 2" (I
don't have an FT-897).
My settings in menu "Radio Setup":
Radio 1: FT-817
Cat baud rate: 38400
COM port x
CAT delay: 20
Radio 2:
FT-847
CAT baud rate 57400
COM port y

Option "Autom. Rx/Tx change" checked, all other options in the menu
unchecked.
That worked flawlessly, also with HO-68.

The same test with the FT-847 as "Radio 1" and the FT-817 as "Radio 2"
worked also flawlessly.

In menu "Options" I have set the SGP4SDP4 model. The SGP8SDP8 model causes a
math error with HO-68 ("Ungultige Gleitkommaoperation" = "Invalid Floating
Point Error"). The reason: In the Keplerian data sets for HO-68 the value of
the element "bstar drag term" (line #1, col. 54 - 60) is 0. I have fixed
that and there is a patch file on my website, Engl. page "Downloads" ,
"Patches".

Hi

Just upgraded my station to a full set of movable antennas (m2), 5500, LVB
etc..

Being new I have a bunch of questions now and then , no doubt simple stuff
.,,,

Questions ranging from setting up on MacDoppler to perhaps a few general
question on the birds,,,

Phone is always a option but email is 'ok too' for questions.....

Hoping someone would volunteer to help me with some questions now and
then, by responding directly to me (not the list) .

Thanks

Going to Dayton '10 It will get better with
more support!
