Hello Auke,
Thank you for your report.
You may remember that the current status of AO-16 is that a hardware
failure causes the satellite to reset itself (which turns off the
transmitter). The issue appears to be related to the internal
temperature of the satellite. When the satellite is in continuous
sunlight (no eclipses), the bird warms up and will support continuous
operations. When the satellite cools down (during periods of
eclipse), it resets itself and turns the transmitter off. Th
satellite is, and will be for the next several years, in an orbit with
substantial eclipses, so the bird is cool and unable to sustain
operations.
What you were hearing was me commanding ON a transmitter in AO-16,
and then hearing it shut itself OFF. The satellite will not turn
itself ON; it has to be commanded ON. Sadly, it will shut itself OFF,
as it has been doing for the last few years. The satellite will stay
up for only a few minutes at best. The duration seems very random,
but it's always short...
When AO-16 is commanded ON, it defaults to the digital mode (1200
BPSK), so you'll hear it "humming". It takes another set of commands
to configure the satellite into voice mode. Often the satellite turns
itself OFF before it can be configured into voice mode...
I do keep testing the satellite every few weeks to see if conditions
have improved or if the satellite has changed in such a way that would
result in its continuous operation during orbits that include
eclipses. So, if you are near the east coast of the US, you might
"catch" me testing out the bird and hear it turned OFF and ON. To this
point, nothing has changed for the better. We can keep hoping :) It
will something like 10 years before the orbit of AO-16 will have no
eclipses...
73,
Mark Hammond, N8MH

Hello All,
Today I noticed AO-16 buzzing over NA this afternoon, with it's signal
abruptly
cutting off, and later back on a few times for several minutes, as it
aproached
the North Pole.
I've no idea of the signifigance, if any that this behaviour indicates about
it's declining health... or perhaps a command station was working with it at
the time?

This last AO-7 Mode A pass at 1412utc wasnt too successful for me. Heard a
couple of weak CW signals and I think Glenn AA5PK answered my CQ, but heard
him for just a second, when the bird was off the tip of Baja, and that was
it. I could just barely hear my own signal coming back to me. My G5RV
antenna isnt the best for 10 meters, and that isnt saying too much either.
When the weather gets better, I will make up a wire turnstile dipole of
sorts and see how that hears.

Hi Patrick,
My note is addressed to everyone over the rainbow, i.e. in Canada, Alaska
and th Northern USA,
I very often call CQ W VE when on AO7 -usually in CW. Why CW? Because CW is
made for DX!
In other words real dx can made in DX only.
I usually get no reply.
What happened to telegraphers there?
I can hear myself well when AO-7 is above Greenland!
Then the footprint of AO-7 buries the Whole Northern part af the American
continent!
It would be a real pleasure to hear answers to my CQ calls!
By the way, there are many other stations have been trying this from the
neighboring countries. (There are great many around us.)

Really great! Thanks for building this. I was thinking it would be a great
thing to have.
Wish list:
1) Sort by callsign as well as bird. This way I can see what my reports were
in one chunk. Maybe break apart call and location?
2) Add field for grid.
Thanks! I really like it.

Keep the suggestions coming
I learnt to do this a while back when I was learning PHP and MySQL
I will make it so you can click on the column header to sort.
The default will be obvoiusly time.
I have been meaning to split call and country
Grid - is that like QG63 ? what is the format ?

Elan,
RS38 is the satellite Universitetsky 2 alias Tatiana 2, that was
launched on September 17 from Baikonur, together with Ugatusat.
Initially it identified itself as 'RS28'. But reports from Moscow
called it 'RS38'. Now the satellite also has started to identify
as 'RS38'.
A couple of weeks after launch the kepler sets were mixed up.
Initially RS38 was 35868, 2009-049D. But now RS38 is 35869,
2009-049E. (Probably Ugatusat is now 35868.)
RS38 can transmit CW and various digital modes on a number of
frequencies between 435.260 and 435.490 MHz. The digital modes
are probably only active when the satellite is within range of
the command station in Russia. The CW telemetry recently showed
up mostly on 435.490 MHz.
Happy new year.

Hi,
I am looking to get my station automated again. Years ago I was running
WISP, FT-736, Yaesu Az-El rotor and TAPR Trackbox. It was a really cool
system watching it completely automate the message transfers to the
satellites. Then came along the internet..........
I now use Orbitron and a TS-2000. Still have the same rotor. The TrackBox is
sitting in the garage, but could be brought back to life. I never changed
the proms for Y2K!!!
So, what is the current equipment being used to tie the tracking software to
control the rotor and radio these days?
I am not tied to Orbitron or the Trackbox, if I need to get something else
more up to date that is fine.
Thoughts about integrating my station together again?
