Aloha
Does anybody know of any problems with
APRSWEST.net? For several days when
trying to logon via UIVIEW I have timed
out repeatedly. Oddly, even clicking on their
website (on another computer), the connection
does not occur? I have checked some
other servers in UIVIEW with no results.
For the moment anyway, my Satgate is
non-functional and there are no other Satgates
currently operating in Hawaii that I am aware of.
Typically, my problems are self induced hihi,
but I thought I would just check around.
I have made no configuration changes that I
am aware of.
Comments welcome. Mahalo.

Hi Andrew
I was thinking of doing something similar, looks like you beat me to
it! Very useful indeed, if you can get others using the page also it
will be a very useful reference point.

I just completed my first QSOs through AO-51 at 12:25 UTC on my new
DJ-G7 handheld and the Arrow antenna while standing on the back porch in
a snow storm in the dark and cold. Thank you KJ4MCZ in FN42 and N5AFV
in EL29 for being the first. I am now smittin.

I've heard/read about OSCARs I & II having their antennas deploy after
separation from
the Agena B, but from all the photos I have seen, it shows a fixed antenna.
There is
even a photo of an AF specialist installing OSCAR I into the payload bay,
and this photo shows
the antenna fully deployed. So on these first two satellites, I'm unsure.
OSCAR III had four antennae made of steel rule type material that were
fan-folded, or otherwise
folded and secured to fit within the assigned area. And Australis OSCAR 5,
as well as OSCAR 6 used actual
carpenter's rules as antenna material. They were tied back, and self
deployed when the satellite
was released.

That's why they have the shape that they do (looking like a segment of a
ring).
>But what about the antenna? Was it deployed after launch, or did it ride
into space already sticking out the side? An on-orbit deploy would have
been excessively complicated for that era (it's even difficult today!), but
I can't see something like that surviving launch intact, either.

A bit of a correction/addition to my earlier email. Don Stoner, W6TNS (sk)
described
the antenna of OSCAR I in a Feb 1962 article in CQ:
"The cover of the package contained a fixture for the 1/4 wave monopole which
used the case as a counterpoise. The antenna was secured to the cover until
after the
transmitter separated from the parent vehicle."

It might be an "Urban Legend" But I always remember that those early
birds antennas were simply made from tape measure like materials. And
they were simply rolled up when the bird was installed into the rocket.
Then after launch and the bird was spat out the antennas simply
"Twanged" out to their extended position.
