Hello All,

Quick note--I'll be turning AO-16 ON in voice mode during the 2020utc 30 Dec
pass. It probably won't stay up very long, but if anybody is around and
would like a QSO or two, give it a shot! I'll probably not be on voice, but
rather standing by in digital mode in order to start it up when it goes
down...

Mode FM Voice Repeater (Downlink is DSB)

Uplink: 145.9200 MHz FM
Downlink 437.0260 MHz SSB (pick one! USB or LSB will both work...)

It will be OFF at the end of this pass, most assuredly...

Happy New Year!

73,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

Preferably with 50R N type connectors.
Whilst weatherproof, good quality PL259s are available, most dealers don't
stock them and thay are NOT 50 Ohm.

If you like building antennas, you might look at the Lindenblad which
performs similarly. I am finishing up my dual-band pair and may get
them installed, today:
http://www.kl7uw.com/LBant.htm

I will fill in more info on this page in a day or two (just a few photos, now)

HO-68 SSTV Report
=================
Dec 30th, 17:53 UTC 20 deg pass

During a low elevation pass, Mike DK3WN and Henk PA3GUO made
the very first SSTV contact via the HO-68 ? linear transponder.

A few images were transmitted between the two radio stations
in Germany and The Netherlands. Signals were transmitted via
HO-68, which was 1200km above earth and about 8000km distant
from both radio amateur stations.

See the images here: http://www.dk3wn.info/p/?p=10478

Same here. Heard it loud and clear including the initial packet and then
your signal, but didn't stay up long enough for me to try and work
through it. Hopefully in the future the temperature and bird will
improve enough to have it back for a while as we once did. Good try anyways!

A practical alternative is to build the QFH from the recent QST
article. I have just finished one of these, and it seems to work
reasonably. As luck would have it, I just posted notes on the process
on my blog at

http://ve9qrp.blogspot.com

This is the RHCP version provided in the article. I found the downlink
from VO-52 to be rather more weak than, say a vertical or dipole. I
attribute this to the difference in circular polarity. I, too, am
interested in switched circularly polarized omnidirectional antennas.
I think I might make a AA2TX lindenblad for the corresponding LHCP
unit.

Does anyone have recommendations for RF switches suited for 2m work
and N-connectors?

Attention
Drew Ko4MA
This mornings pass @xxxx UTC orbit #28925 AO-51 was back to normal to my way
of thinking USB up and FM down, no funny going carriers and signal strength
was normal again I.E. S7 to 9, originally we down here thought the
interference was caused by our northern neighbours as they cause a lot of
havoc on AO-7 mode B as it goes South east to north west, thank you for
every thing.
Alex VK5ALX with the MP3 recording showed it as we hear it.
As aside we here in VK/ZL look forward to AO-51 in mode V/S and each month,
more are getting there gear up and running

Great article!

But a question that has always nagged me... Perhaps someone on the BB knows
the answer?

I understand that the early Oscars got their ride into space by replacing a
piece of concrete (or similar dead weight material) with our satellite.
That's why they have the shape that they do (looking like a segment of a
ring).

But what about the antenna? Was it deployed after launch, or did it ride
into space already sticking out the side? An on-orbit deploy would have
been excessively complicated for that era (it's even difficult today!), but
I can't see something like that surviving launch intact, either.

Anybody know?

A camera on the cross boom is useful for lots of things. I have had one on
my setup for years. It was really useful for knowing where AO-40's S-band
downlink was in relation to the many trees that surround my house. It was
also a bit scary to watch the whole rig moving to the wind of a storm, and
comforting to know that the antennas were still aligned properly after the
storm had passed.

But, I presume you had some protection for those times when a satellite's
path crosses within camera view of the sun, right? I rigged up a
solenoid/spring driven shutter in front of the camera lens, as protection,
reminding myself to only energize it when pointing in a safe direction.
What did you use?

Hi David!

I must have worked you the day after that first QSO. I have
a QSO with you on 30 December 2008 at 0129 UTC. I was
south of Phoenix standing on the DM32/DM42 boundary,
and you questioned how I could be in two grids at once. I
did not know at that time - and didn't know until this e-mail -
that you were just starting out on the satellites at that time.

I was not on the pass where you made your first QSO. I
have the audio from the pass where we worked for the first
time, and could send you an MP3 if you'd like a copy of it.

It's been fun to work you in SSB via satellite, along with the
many QSOs on the FM birds. Hope to work you more in
2010.

Happy New Year and 73 from the desert....

Today in the Mail, I received two QSL cards from November of 2001. One was
from Belgium and the other from Japan both contacts I made via AO-40. Boy do
I miss that Bird! Satellite DX is now limited to Canada and Mexico for my
location.

I guess I do not totally understand why it took 8+ years to receive cards
from "The Bureau", but it was a welcome surprise!

Happy New Year

Patrick,

I remember that QSO and remember scratching my head and wondering what you
were going on about being in 2 grids at once!?!? Thankfully you were (and
are) a great elmer and took the time to bring me up to speed.

I'd love to have a copy of that QSO...go ahead and send it over.

73, David
