Thank you Mike for the reminder about the .325 downlink! I've only
been listening to 435.225.

Maybe it will show up here after all.

One, we are setting aside time for CW only on Straight Key Night. Two,
there is many times more demand for voice, and mixing modes on a single
downlink is problematic.

Has anyone ever put a camera on their antenna rotators to track the moon ?

To check the pointing angle etc

Yes, at our school, the surplus 12 meter dish had a big camera
with an 8" lens. I restored it (40 years of dust and bird-poop
on it) and when zoomed in, the Moon would just about fill the
screen. Since our 432 MHz beamwidht was only twice the diameter
of the moon, this made an excellent visual tracker!

Drew - Can you expand on this? I got my start on AO-7 Mode A the first time
around ca 1980 using an old Ameco TX-62 I purchased for $40 at the TRW
swapmeet and made lots of cross mode CW/SSB contacts. As I recall, this was
common place and perfectly acceptable in those days, even encouraged, as
lots of beginners had CW only by keying the PTT on their 2M FM.

Have times changed? I realize that there aren't a lot of CW ops left these
days, but it is still a powerful mode and a good introduction to what can be
done with weak signals on a minimal investment. That 10 dB or so SNR
advantage really helps.

Don't misunderstand, I am not a CW forever guy and try to be mode agnostic,
but I do operate as much CW as any other mode. Having said that, I prefer
the linear mode satellites, but that is not a CW/voice issue, but rather
what I see as a greater utilization of available resources. But I agree that
the FM birds have their place, particularly in seducing beginners to the
joys of working others through satellites.

I too am getting back into satellites after a short hiatus, well maybe a
long one, I last worked RS12 on Mode A and K. But a new TS-2000X sits in the
shack and I am getting the VHF/UHF antennas back up. Listen for me on CW and
SSB. Maybe FM as well. Are any digital modes being used? I recall reports in
the AMSAT Journal of some successful Hell QSOs a few years back. - Duffey

And speaking of ARISS, I saw on twitter (from @xxxxxxxxx that there were
a total of 121 contacts with schools in 2009.

I'm not about to be lured into the CW/SSB debate. In this particular
mode, sharing a single frequency downlink, one really needs to stick
with a single common mode. In this case, this time, it's SSB voice,
except for SKN, when it's CW. To me, mixing CW and SSB on this
particular mode is like mixing SSTV, Voice, and Packet on the regular FM
repeater. That wouldn't go over too well either, as we have seen
recently with HO-68.

Linear transponders are an entirely different animal, and all your prior
experiences hold true there still.

I tried the 13:40-ish pass, and also feel that the audio was low...

I'm only working with a quarter-wave ground plane at the moment, and it was
only a 10 degree pass for me. I heard a couple of other stations, one of
which was off-frequency on the uplink. We'll see what it's like later on a
higher pass.

George, KA3HSW

PS - Luc: I heard you come back to me on HO-68 last night, but then there
was a deep fade and we never completed our exchanges. (It's a little hard
to concentrate on satellite operating when the Bears are actually WINNNG a
game...)

When is possible stay GG and GF fields on the HO-68 future operational

They are among the most dense in terms of amateur radio operators in

Anyway we are keep tuning even during beacon-only mode. These are some

I had been listening recently for this bird, based on the amsat page I
wasn't aware of the "other" frequency 435.325 MHz as it isn't listed
there.

Perhaps someone could update the page?

It is realy needed to reduce the power as much as possible.
On high angle 1W is enough.
Last pas over Europe was a mess. Many are trying full power.
Some guys trying in FM.
So try next time to reduce power. Take 5 or 10W over horizon and 5W or less
high
angle.

Hi All,

I've had a good look round the forums and on the net generally, I'm
coming into satellites as a newcomer, having spent
my past 15 ham years on HF/6M CW/DIGI modes. (with a bit of DSTAR
recently..!!)

So a few questions I hope you can answer and update me....

i) Generally what power levels are needed to access the birds...?

ii) Antenna's - I've read a lot about the arrow antenna - how good is
this antenna would you recommend for a new comer ?

iii) HT or Base Transceiver - How realistic is working satellites on an
HT with 5W ? & is base transceiver preferred ?

iv) Following on from the above - I've read about the FT-2000 or FT-847
which would be better suited to satellites or another rig ?

v) Obviously a rotator / elevator with a beam(s) will give a better
performance, but what sort of performance could I expect out of an arrow
on a tripod with an HT & 5W ?

vi) On the HT subject - is it necessary to use 2 HT (one TX / one RX) or
will just one do ?

vii) ....and finally...some have mentioned that not all the sats listed
on the AMSAT page are live - where can I get the most upto date list of
satellites that are active & their frequencies / modes..?

Thats it for now - hope you can help...chances are I may have some more
questions soon.....

Cheers

RH / G0TKZ

I'm a relative satellite newbie, and hence I don't have a base station set
up. I do have a 2m SSB rig and an HT capable of SSB reception up at 435
MHz, as well as an Arrow antenna. With that in mind, does anyone have any
tips for making contacts via the linear transponder on HO-68? Other than
keeping my antenna pointed in the direction of the bird/rotated to avoid
fades, how much do I need to compensate for doppler on the transmit and
receive rigs? If I only tweak the RX rig, is that acceptable? Also, how
much power should I use? Thanks for any advice this list might have!

Will do. For what it is worth, I didn't know about the other frequency
either.

Thanks, Drew KO4MA
