My congratulations to the CAMSAT people with the XW-1 satellite.
Now we have another interresting satellite to the list of OSCARs.
I can not work the satellite for the moment, but when my station is active
again I sure will make some qso's.
Still my congratulations to the people who worked on this satellite.

Landwehr 70 cm preamp for sale.
This unit is weathered, it's been on a roof tower for many years. Some of
the mounting hardware will have to be replaced. I haven't actually used it
in several years but it was working the last time I tried it. I don't have
the equipment to test it, so I'll offer a 30 day money back guarantee. $60
plus shipping from 14063. Pictures are available at: www.johnahansen.com.

Hi Everybody,
After a 15 year hiatus from being an active satellite operator, I am in the
process of pulling my satellite ground station together to operate the
various LEO birds that are available to us today. While almost all of the
equipment I have is new, I have one vintage item that I would like to put to
use in my shack but I am going to need some help. While I was working at
SSTL back in the early 90s, I purchased two of the JAMSAT TrakBox kits
developed by JA6FTL, JG6MCG, SM0TER et al from AMSAT-UK. As I understand it
the kit was made available by TAPR here in the states for a while as well. I
built one kit up at the time and sent it to my Dad, KB5ZPK (SK) for him to
use in his newly acquired store-and-forward ground station here in Texas.
Since I was operating from the Command Center at the University of Surrey, I
put the other one aside for use at a later time. Well, the later time turned
out to be now and of course since that time the world has dealt with Y2K and
all of the associated software upgrades and changes that had to be done. It
miraculously appears that I haven't lost any of the components for the kit
so from a hardware standpoint I think I am set but I am concerned about the
availability of post Y2K software to run in the system. So my question is,
can anyone tell me if there is any post Y2K software available for the
Trakbox and if so, how can I go about getting a copy of it? While I realize
there are now other options available for autotracking, for sentimental
reasons I would like to get my kit up and running so any help that I can get
would be greatly appreciated.
I look forward to working many of you on the birds once I become QRV.
Thanks for reading my note.

It amazes me, the number of people who, every time a new
satellite/radio/rotor/interface etc appears, have to ask how to
configure SatPC32 to work with the new equipment.
I've never seen this with other software, other than the HRD suite.
I've not used SatPC preferring Orbitron or InstantTrack.
Does SatPC not have a manual or instructions?
Are we breeding operators who cannot read or understand the language?
What's going on?

I think it's because more people use SatPC32 then any other satellite
tracking program. The majority of SatPC32 users don't have a problem. Also
the experienced users of SatPC32 don't mind helping out the new users of the
s/w simply because it is the best satellite tracking package in use today,
hands down...

Nigel, just my thoughts but I feel that many people just want a quick answer
rather than taking the time to dig the information out of the book/help
file. I'm not suggesting that there's anything wrong with that. Time spent
searching for configuration data procedures is time that cannot be spent
doing more useful projects.
I gave a quick (and uneducated) effort to adding XW-1 into my .SQF files
from what I read here on -bb. No success. But no problem. I'll get back to
worrying about XW-1 eventually. In the meantime I have other more pressing
things to do.
Rather than all of us reinventing the wheel each time a new satellite is
launched and operational, why not have one of the 'experts' make the
additions and make the subsequent .SQL files available to all somewhere on
the Amsat web site?

Or encourage the author of the software to write a utility/menu item that
will update all the required files just by the
user inputting data into a few boxes.
If the user can't intuitively update the software then the project isn't
finished.

"HOPE-1" sounds really fine in EL29kq.? The following information is
assuming that my SatPC32 is configured correctly for the "HOPE-1".? My keps
read the 36th orbit, an ascending pass at a height of 1196. I picked HOPE up
at 0109z?on a heading of?97 degrees az from EL29kq, less than 1 minute?after
AOS and copied her until 0121z at 10.2 degrees az.? I lost her signals at 1
minute after LOS.? My copy was made with and without the sp432vdg preamp in
line and using a 17 element yagi in vertical position. Her signals were very
readable un-amplified.? there was some fading on two occasions with out loss
of signal.? My fourth string of copy was: BJ6SA XW XW AAA TTT AA6 ABT ETT

One possible source of confusion is due to the fact that amateur.txt
is not the only possible source of keplerian elements. If you call up
the window that appears with the 'Satelites' menu, on the far left you
will see a list of files in the SatPC32/Kepler directory. Clicking on
any one of these will generate a list of satellites whose orbits are
defined in that file, and from there you can select a subgroup to be
displayed in the main program. As a result, if you edit the
'amateur.txt' file, be sure that this is the file you have selected
under the 'Satellites' window as well. Also note that when you update
the keps from the web, you'll clobber the file that you edited by
hand.

It is only necessary to restart SatPC32 after editing any of the auxiliary
files.... not the whole computer.

It would be nice if someone could convince the powers-that-be at Celestrak
to add newly-launched amateur satellites to the amateur.txt file sooner...

Doug,
The TAPR site lists software versions after Y2K
http://www.tapr.org/kits_trakbox.html
http://www.tapr.org/software_library.php?dir=/software_lib/sat/trakbox
You can also find it here:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftpsoft.html
under Firmware near the bottom of the page

P.S. Keep me posted, I have a kit that I hope to finally assemble this
winter.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Help for an old timer
