Hi All,
Has anyone used SatPC32 with a netbook computer? I'd appreciate your
comments. Which netbooks do best? What ports do netbooks come with?

I just tried SatPC32 on AO-7 with an old Dell Inspiron 3800. It works well
controlling 2 FT-817s in the shack. When outside, using a charged battery,
it was very slow. I had to restart SatPC32 a couple of times, and, as a
result, lost at least 2 QSOs with Europe. Maybe it's time for a change.

Tnx and 73,
Tony, N2UN

I use an Acer Netbook to run SatPc32...has worked like a champ.

There's no CD-ROM drive but if I need one I just map to one on another
machine on the home network. There are no serial ports...I'm using the RT
Systems serial to USB converters...they work great (one for the rotator and
one for the radio).

Tony,

I have been using an Aspire 1 netbook, it has a 1.6G CPU with 1G RAM and
has 3 USB ports. SatPC32 runs very well controlling an Icom 910. The cost
was $299.

According to my prelaunch Echo manual, the S/C has black and silver kapton
tape along the edges to impart spin. The documentation mentions that the
earlier microsats used painted antenna elements to achieve the same result.

Given enough time, the equilibrium rotation rate will be the result of a
balance of the torque from the tapes, and "drag" caused by the internal eddy
currents. I am not aware of any data for AO-51, but normally spacecraft
passively stabilize in a matter of days, weeks, or rarely months. Since the
spin rate is falling slowly, it suggests, but does not prove, that the cause
is a decrease in the applied torque from the kapton tapes.

Kepton is widely used in S/C, but is subject to deterioration due to UV and
particularly atomic oxygen. Going back to the Long Duration Exposure
Facility and other tests in the 1980s, it was found that it and similar
"soft" materials had significant changes in their optical and mechanical
properties. Atomic oxygen levels have the usual exponential dependence on
altitude, plus a factor of 10-1000 variation due to solar and magnetosphere
conditions. Effects on kapton by atomic oxygen were of considerable
interests to shuttle, ISS, and HST designers, though the reason was
primarily optical and contamination. They of course have active pointing.

It would be interesting to know from the Olde Tymers whether similar changes
were found in much earlier LEO S/C, and how other LEO S/C using the same
system as AO-51 have faired recently.

Anthony,

I read the responses from K6CDW and KB1PVH, and I agree with them. I also
have used my Acer Aspire One to Doppler-tune two Yaesu rigs (either one
FT-857 and one FT-817 or two 817s) using SatPC 32, and it works perfectly
for me. You may be aware that there are offshore sellers on eBay who offer
USB-to-Yaesu-data-plug cables that are inexpensive and work perfectly -
here, at least.

As noted, the Aspire has three USB ports.

Best of luck with your station and a netbook!

Just a quick "THANKS" to all of those operators they made the effort
to work (us) me during my demo with the Delta ARC ham class last
night on S0-50. A little "cold" outside at that time. I think winter is
here.

73 to all,
Rick

  Hi All,

I will be doing a satellite demo on S0-50 tomorrow night from Memphis
for our current Tech. class. It will be on the Dec. 4th - 0250utc pass.
I would appreciate a few contacts to show them how easy it is to work
the "birds" with an HT and handheld antenna.

  Thanks in advance,
  Rick - WA4NVM

For my in-shack computer, I use similar technology in a shoe-box sized
desktop, the motherboard linked here:
http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/D945GCLF2-D945GCLF2D/D945GC
LF2-D945GCLF2D-overview.htm
often nicknamed as the 'Little Falls 2'. By using it to drive a large
monitor, you get the best of both worlds: low CPU power and the screen
real estate that satellite operations sometimes requires.

My dream mobo would be one of these Intel Atom ones with more space
for ram and with the virtualization features turned on so that I can
run linux images alongside the Win32 ham stuff.
