Kevin,
My personal best on an LEO is Norway to Japan - (FO-20 in 1997).
Depending whether you classsify AO-7 as a LEO bird - (with an orbital height
of 1400Km) - the current record there
is 7500 - 7700Km, by several stations.
You may have been only interested in FM satellites, to9 which I have no
idea.
Hope that helps somewhat.

Hello all,
UO-11 heard in the UK on the 09:20 pass.
I have a recording of the middle one minute of the pass (6 minutes after
AOS). It's not brilliant but someone might be able to decode it.
Let me know if you want the wav file.

Luc,
The ARISS VHF/UHF antennas were funded entirely by AMSAT-NA and some
volunteers. Would you you like to join the ranks of those who contributed?
If so you know how to contact Martha.
What are you implying here?
Of course you seemed to miss the part about the V and U antennas and the
"and volunteers" as opposed to the L& S antennas which were a separate
project conducted by the ARISS Europe team. The L & S antennas were
especially difficult since they had to withstand the launch environment of
the Shuttle payload bay. I think the ARISS Europe team overcame very
difficult obstacles including technical and financial. They are to be
commended for their work and tenacity. The operative thing here is
performance and achievement rather than talk.

Ramsey actually has a pretty good low noise preamp for 70 cm and those are
cheap. Takes about 15 minutes to assemble the kit. I do recommend
replacing the fixed capacitor across the coil with a variable. That way you
don't have to "fiddle" with bending the coil to tune it. You just "set" the
coil and then use the variable to adjust the actual frequency.
I bought one of the 70 cm kits and one of the 222 MHz kits several months
ago. Both of them work very well. The 222 MHz has a slug tuned coil but
the 70 cm is fixed and you are supposedly to tune it by moving the turns
around. But, MUCH easier to adjust if you replace the fixed capacitor with
a variable.
I am almost sure that they ship internationally. The kits are less than $15

Look at SSB or ARR -- both good but SSB has slightly better reports from

can alert the VK's and ZL's its time to have some fun !!!!!
Cheers from McMurdo Station Antarctica KC4USV

Fantastic - well done.
At this, the anniversary time of the fateful AirNZ flight so long ago.
I'll send your message around.

cheap. Takes about 15 minutes to assemble the kit. I do recommend
replacing the fixed capacitor across the coil with a variable. That way you
don't have to "fiddle" with bending the coil to tune it. You just "set" the
coil and then use the variable to adjust the actual frequency.

ago. Both of them work very well. The 222 MHz has a slug tuned coil but
the 70 cm is fixed and you are supposedly to tune it by moving the turns
around. But, MUCH easier to adjust if you replace the fixed capacitor with
a variable.

Hi Glen, K9STH
But how do you adjust the input of your low noise preamplifier for the
lovest Noise Figure ?
To do that you cannot just "set" the coil and then use the variable to
adjust the actual frequency for maximum output but you need a Noise
Source and adjust the coil and the variable for the maximum S/N ratio
and this can be done manually or automatically using a Noise Figure
Meter.
This is why to build a low noise preamplifier without to have a Noise
Figure Meter or a SINAD meter is like to walk blindly.

Thanks to all who provided the info on the GSFC 2 line elements that I used to
receive in my mailbox every few days.
I currently update all my software through the satellite element update
feature within satpc. I download
the keps, and run a little script that updates my other tracking programs
(and as we all know, one can't
have too many tracking programs!).
I recall now that I used the GSFC mailings for Amateur, as well as weather
satellites for APT reception.
I remember that I was pretty familiar with the interpretation of the 2-line
format, and could type them in
fairly quick. Don't ask me to repeat this feat today! Was it tedious? I
guess you could say yes, but remember that
feeling you had when you loaded, then ran a tracking program on your home
computer for the first time - that computer
being a Sinclair, trs-80, coco, VIC, C-64, Apple II, Osbourne (insert your
favorite here)? Remember the elation of printing out, sometimes
in the matter of just a few minutes, batch prediction output for the whole
week? Oscarlocator was a fine method that worked
well for us, but Wow! A home computer in my shack! Then we sat and imagined
a day when we could get our computers to aim our antennas,
and compensate for doppler.
Thanks to all who filled in the details on my little digression down memory
lane. I'm sure there are those of you
on the list who's lane goes down much farther than mine, and I'd like to
hear the stories. Thanks!

Ah yes... I remember that! It did look as if an old teletype was chugging
these things off
from some dark corner of a GSFC back office. And yes, I remember a limit of
ten, although
I think I had separate mailings for WX and Amateur satellites, at least
until I started updating the
amateur sats from the journal back pages.
