Dan,
This is very interesting. Do you have any idea what the nominal cost is
based on satellites that we would target for this.

I see that both the Icom 746PRO and the Icom 910H have been discontinued,
and I am assuming that the Icom 9100 is the replacement for both of them.
Any word yet on when it will be made available?

But if you put it in a menu then you will, of course, have everyone griping
how the power control is in a menu, like they do for the FT950.

Just got my new ARR SP432VDG preamp in the mail today. Since I'm on a
budget, I opted to buy this unit rather than a mast mount outdoor amp.
It is still my intention to mast mount this preamp though. Advanced
Receiver Research themselves say that you can do this using a NEMA
outdoor electrical enclosure. The problem is that I've been looking at
outdoor electrical enclosures and have yet to find one that has
dimensions that the preamp will fit in. I have really only been looking
at outlet type boxes.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can use? The unit is about 3
inches tall including the N connectors and about 4 and 5/8
inches wide. I need something relatively cheap that will give reliable
protection.
Thanks,
Michael, W4HIJ

I used one of these for years. A diplexer and the same preamp fit
inside, and I used bulkhead female to female connectors to connect
through the side of the box, and a brass bolt for DC.

That looks *exactly* like the box my Balun Designs choke balun is mounted in!
I've also had good luck using Tupperware-type containers found at the
grocery store, or plastic storage boxes found at Lowe's and Home Depot.
I'm just finishing re-installing my HF vertical, and I used a plastic box
from Home Depot to mount the SGC-230 inside of.

Hello
I believe it's the IC756 ProIII that has been discontinued not the 746pro
and Is the 9100 actually a Satellite transceiver.
I havent seen any proof of full duplex operation and doppler control

I notice the RF control on the front of the rig. I HOPE they allow menu
control out RF output for each band. Otherwise you are going to have an
Icom 910 with HF/Six. The TS-2000 does a nice job of allowing various
power output levels to deal with amps, etc. It would be a shame if they
overlooked this important feature, for the second time.

Would you rather have it in a menu or risk damaging your various
amplifiers when you forget to adjust it for whatever input might be
required? This would be a moot point if you were going to run the rig
barefoot and rove with it. But, if you are a serious op who desires an
amp on each band, having to adjust the control from band to band is a
pain in the ass and a recipe for disaster.

Although there has been some talk about various models being
discontinued, both the 910 and the756ProII are still very much evident
on the Icom America website!
The 9100 is billed as a satellite transceiver (I mean it does has a
little button on it marked "satellite", so it must be....yes?) but in
essence its a TS2000 clone (a shack in a box) and my fear is that
because it has so many features packed in to it, its only going to be as
good as its weakest component.
I will wait for those operators with vastly deeper pockets than mine to
give it a thorough shakedown before I would consider trading in my
trusty 910 - after all, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Sometimes I think we are a bit guilty of being "rig tarts" (quaint
English saying meaning to be enamoured of the next shiny box that comes
along to the detriment of our existing gear!)

What about the new Kenwood? Anyone know if it will be sat capable? I
hope to have enough money after the first of the year to purchase a new
radio. Unfortunately, I think both the new Icom and Kenwood rigs will be
out of my reach. I've heard rumors of
3K + for the Icom price. . I liked the TS-2000X I had and was hoping to
get another new one before production is discontinued.

I'm making good progress to get my KLM and Cushcraft antennas mounted on the
roof.I think I'll be able to wrap it all up this weekend.
I do have a question about the polarity switch on the Cushcraft 30 element
440 antenna. The switch has one lead that seems to be intended go to +12vDC
and the negative lead goes to the boom of the antenna. Do I need connect
-12vDC to the coax on my feed line in order to complete this circuit? Seems
easier to just disconnect the wire from the boom and run it to a dedicated
-12vDC lead. My switch on my KLM is fed with dedicated leads for + and -
and it seems that would be the easiest way to deal with the Cushcraft.
Am I missing something obvious here? I have wires to spare and can so it's
not a big savings to me to run the -12vDC on the coax if that is the reason
why this was designed this way.
Pointers and suggestions welcome.

Michael,
I have used a 4 X 6 X 6 inch metal box for years and it has worked
out just fine. Available at Home Depot (or your other favorite home
improvement store). Photo with both 2M and 430 ARR preamps available at:

According to the AES website both the 746PRO and the 910H are listed as
closeouts, and Gigaparts doesn't even list the 746PRO for sale any longer.
The 9100 will up the ante on the TS2000 by doing dual receive and allowing
for optional roofing filters to be installed for HF/6m.

Hi David,
Happy to hear about your progress.

No .........run please a separate wire for the -12 volt DC

A dedicated wire for the -12 volt DC is best
My switch on my KLM is fed with dedicated leads for + and -

Yes, I agree

To run power supply to the above relay I have used a coax cable RG-58
The inner conductor for +12 volt DC and the braid for -12 Volt DC

A couple notes surrounding my AMSAT presentation in Torrance, CA this
evening.
1. THANK YOU to whichever AO-51 commander flipped AO-51 to V/U today.
It was scheduled to go to V/U at 00:00GMT on the 20th - which was
4:00PM on the 19th my local time. And the pass I wanted to work was
just 42 minutes later. And it was ON!
2. Don't know exactly how to explain it, but the pass today at 4:42PM
Pacific Standard Time didn't exhibit the "normal" silencing, then
faint voices, then stronger voices. It plainly BLASTED into
discernible conversations, and we we were able to work it much sooner
than "normal." We were not hidden behind foothills. It was a pretty
clear shot South to AOS. It really floored me - in a most positive
way. It was dramatic.
3. Thanks to KI6VBY Tim for showing up for the pass. He isn't a member
of the club I was speaking to. But he follows AMSAT-BB, and has
cruised my sat Web site, and wanted to meet me and work the bird
together. Glad he got to meet Carl Gardenias, too. Tim's no "newbie
amateur" - he has built several portable HF antennas for events, and
has a great, analytical mind. He's also served our country in the
military, and is working on advanced degrees in college. He had to
leave right after the pass today, in order to get some school study
time completed. When he has time, he'll be a valuable asset to
whichever club he joins.
4. Another thanks to ARRL Orange Section guru Carl Gardenias, who
helped me carry my bags to/from the meeting room. "I wanted to see
your show in person," Carl advised. He said he only cringed once at
my humor during the presentation ...
That's it for in-person presentations this year. I still have two
Internet shows lined up (EchoLink) in December. And a date in January
already made. Thanks for a great year, AMSAT-BB folks!
