Hello to all,
Andre, ZS2BK warned on the satuday ( 7th ) that all the passages of the AO-7
Dean, ZD8DC will be active on Ascension Island in the AO-7 Mode B. He will
be operating in half duplex.
Good luck to the stations that have conditions of work of the Ascension

QST QST QST On the phone now with Neil W6FOG and he is well despite
quite the seafaring adventure!
Out of the blue the sea state went from calm and idle to truly ugly.
After fighting rolling waves and rouge waves for 16 hours Niel
activated the epirb. the coast guard sent the helicopter out to the
position south of Monterrey and monitored them while they turned north
(into the waves) and a coast guard cutter was dispatched from Alameda
Island to assist.
?The vessel Com Center sustained significant tiller and damage to the
stern but was still navigable as the cutter arrived (36 hours after
epirb activation) to take the vessel in tow to Santa Cruz. They
snapped three 1 1/2 lines during the 7 hour tow to port, but vessel
passengers and captain made it just fine!
?Three cheers for the Coast Guard, Real heroes in this as Neil was
truly exhausted and not able to be much help after his ordeal at the
helm.
He's reporting that today is the first day he's feeling human, again,
due to exhaustion, hypothermia and deep muscle fatigue. ?Repairs have
been swift and he just got his Sat pre-amp back up and is planning to
resume (weather permitting) on a Friday to Monday time window.
He and the hearty mate will enjoy telling you the full story on the
air and We all look forward to working them underway again soon!

Hello
We intend to schedule the FM V/U cross-band repeater on Sumbandila as follows
(all times in UTC; all activations 13 minutes duration):
Fri 6 Nov 2009:
21:38 (Eastern Australia / New Zealand)
Sa 7 Nov 2009:
02:05 (Western Asia)
08:17 (Europe)
11:40 (Eastern part of South America)
16:13 (Central Canada / USA)
The CTCSS tone for the transponder is 233.6 Hz.
Uplink: 145.875MHz
Downlink: 435.345MHz
Additional recommendations:
Use only narrow FM
Switch off compression
Speak softly (mic gain down)
Satellite characteristics:
All antennas are linear vertically polarized (1/4 wavelength)
Sat Tx power = 5W
Sat Rx sensitivity = -116.5dBm for 12dB SINAD
Max antenna gain = 4dBi
Note that the satellite is currently in a controlled sun tracking mode with
antennas Nadir pointing.
Apologies for the late notification, but we're still in the commissioning
phase and can therefore not guarantee the SA-AMSAT payload service far ahead
in time. Since we're using the same (shared) transponder for TT&C purposes
at present, we can unfortunately not schedule the payload over RSA on
Saturday.

Excellent 19 deg pass over VK/ZL at 2138 UTC. Very strong downlink signals
up to 60db over S9 for most of the pass. Could hold the transponder in at
less than 1 deg.
Worked Graham (VK2AYE) and no problems using the recommended technique.

Hello Jack,
the data line for SO-67 in the file SuBTone.SQF should look as follows:
SO-67,233.6,$01,36
The spelling of the satellite name must exactly match the spelling in the
Keps file.
The format of the first value (233.6) is used by the IC-910H and the Yaesu
transceivers FT-817/857/897, the 2nd ($01 = hex. 01) is the code of the
Yaesu FT-847 and the
3rd (36) the code of the Kenwood transceivers for the 233.6 sub tone.
With the FT-736R the 2nd value had to be $20 (hex. 20).

I hope the answers will be via the BB so that the rest of us can learn. I
also have the same question. My fallible memory says we load the tone
information into the 910 window before turning on the computer.

Loren......I use an Elk dual-band log periodic yagi with my FT-60R and works
great. Doesnt need that diplexer, like the Arrow, but the price is just abit
cheaper than the Arrow. Also breaks down into a nice package, and I made an
ABS tube for mine to carry it in. Sort of an overkill, but at least it wont
get crushed by an 18 wheeler. I used the HT/Elk setup on a 3 week vacation
last month to back into Georgia, and worked quite a bit of grids locations
and also stations with good success.

Hi all,
SO-67 worked great over Europe this morning.
The downlink signal is the largest I have seen for years :-)
I used FMN with mike gain turned down. That is far the best way
to work the uplink.
Some stations with a too wide deviation even made the downlink
change amplitude - or cut it off. I used normal FM on the receive
side.
Worked G3VZV and IZ1ERR. Lots of other stations on.
Thanks for a new satellite for us to use.

Hi Kostas,
If you do not have FMN on your radio, turn the mike gain down and/or
do not shout :-)
