Hi AMSATs,
I am happy to hear that the PSLV-C9 has safely delivered all the new ham
satellites in their orbit. My congratulations to all the people who have
worked on this. Also to the ISRO team, as I met some of them in 2005.
In 2005 the PSLV-C6 was the rocket that brought my transponder onboard VO-52
into space, and now some 3 years later the Delfi-C3 added another Dutch
transponder in space. It gives a great feeling when after many hours of work
the satellite is safe in space and doing its job.
Even after 3 years the memory that is still clear in my mind is the actual
launch of PSLV-C6, with the noise of the engine and extreem bright light from
the flame that comes out of the rocket engine. Finaly silence comes back and a
trail of smoke is left. Then its waiting for the first sign of life from the
satellite, what seems to take ages hihi.
I just checked the orbit of Delfi-C3 and the interresting thing that I
noticed is that Delfi-C3 and VO-52 are in the same orbit, even the hight is
almost the same. This can be interresting as one can hop from one to the other
satellite when they are passing.
However, VO-52 is little faster in speed than DELFI-C3 and somewhere in
May/June they will be almost at the same place. Wonder how that will work out
hihi...
Unfortunatly I have QRL at daytime, but Wednesday and Thursday is QRL off and
will have my ear listen to Delfi-C3 and all the other new sats.
Good job to all the teams,
Delfi-C3, SEEDS, Cute1.7, Compass-1, AAUSAT-II, and CANX-2

Heard and sent only a couple of lines of TLM to the server
during the pass to the east of here, IO80SM, from 1940 to
about 1947 UTC.
Should be better prepared for the next pass.

All,
Delfi-C3 was heard again over the Delfi-C3 groundstation at 1843 UTC with
solid signals on 145.930MHz 1200bd BPSK, using the "old" TLE's which are
still on our mission ops page at:

Very strong signal from Delfi telemetry transmitter on 15:07 U.T.C 28 April
2008.
Maximum elevation was 58 degres but was unable to synchronize de telemetry
decoding software, will have to get use of the doppler shift which was quite
high
for this pass that was almost overhead.
Set up here is: Receiver: Yaesu FT-726R
Antenna: Cushcraft 10 elements Yagi, Azimuth and
elevation controlled.
The bird was at the rendez-vous using the kepler elements downloaded from the
Delfi
website. Have recorded the entire pass in wav format.
Good work and congratulations to the Delfi team!

Dear all,
just heard the satellite during the pass starting at about 19.35 UTC.
The sat was transmitting on 145.930, I have used RASCAL to try to decode
the signal, but It was very difficult for me, it was very difficult to
"Sync" the signal, and so nothing was decoded.
My setup:
- ICOM IC-910H
- antenna KLM 2x7 el.
- signal sometimes better in RHCP, sometimes in LHCP
- signal about S3-S4
I'll try again tomorrow ....

Hi.
Received good signals from DelfiC3 tonight in IO91TK 15km west of London.
Nice to hear another satellite on 2m. Just love that low path loss!
145.930
IC706 + 10m RG58 to roof mounted vertical. No pre-amp. Signals 18dB above
noise.
Nominal distance to satellite 1400km
The signal abruptly disappeared at 19:45 and 5 seconds. ( Command from
ground station?) This was not the usual transistion as a satellite pases over
the
horizon
Anyway, strong signals so very good news.
Well done Delft University of Technology.

Hi all,
we heard Delfi-C3 again on the 2115 pass over the groundstation and heard
the spacecraft boot during the pass when she got out of eclipse. Actually,
PA3WEG and I are sitting at home controlling the GS via VNC/Skype... worked
fine:) Strong sigs again.
We can confirm the earlier reports by G0MRF and G8ATE of the sudden dropout
of the TX at 145.930. We have observed this on previous passes, usually, the
TX comes up on again after a few secs but not so this time. But the "free
reset" we got when getting out of the eclipse that followed got it running
ok again.
We are receiving quite some telemetry on our server, thanks a lot to all of
you listening!!!
Time to go to bed now:), more updates tomorrow.

Just heard great signals of Delfic3 on 145.930.

LOS time was 21:24:21UTC
I was tracking Object B.
Also heard strong signals of seeds, but I switched to delfic3 when it switched

Having listened to a recording of the pass mentioned below, the chirpy
signal is crystal locked, but the doppler shift deviated significantly from
the auto-tuning, which suggests the keps in use need some refinement.
Unfortunately the two signals are only 300 Hz apart.

Apologies about jumping to the conclusion about the crystal.

Observations from the pass 1242 UTC to 1255 UTC, over VK.
Copied two CW signals on nominal 437.275.
One was very unstable and chirpy with slow CW, the other was clean, fast
CW, but quite weak in signal strength. The unstable signal drifted down the
band very quickly, definitely not crystal locked.
Also copied SEEDS on nominal 437.485, but may be slightly lower in
frequency.
Signal clean but very weak. Visible on Spectran but not decode-able.
This pass was in Eclipse.
Used auto-tracking throughout the pass, which may have been a retrograde
move.
Colin VK5HI.

Hi Dave,
for satellite tracking I use "orbitron". It's easy to use and freeware.
You can find it here: http://www.stoff.pl/
The Keplerian elements needed for tracking can be found on the Delfi C-3
web page:
http://www.delfic3.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=93&Itemid=122
Simply copy and paste the 2-line format in a txt-file and save this file
as *.txt. This txt-file can then be loaded into the satellite tracking
program, for example "orbitron".
Don't worry about Az/El rotor. I could receive almost every cubesat on
VHF with my general groundplane antenna. Even with my HT TH-F7E
reception in the field is possible.
You can also download the RASCAL telemetry decoding software from the
Delfi C-3 page. See here:

I would add to Jen's helpful comments that your antenna choice
decisions are somewhat different when dealing with satellites. A
high-gain omni antenna for terrestrial use gets its gain by keeping
the radiation angle low. For a satellite, though, that means that you
will receive poorly above, say, 15 degrees, and that might be the part
of the pass where your omni antenna would otherwise have a fighting
chance.
All to say that a crummy 1/4 wave groundplane might work better than
the jpole, especially if you can tilt the vertical element over a bit
to reduce the null overhead.
This is truly an experimental branch of the hobby: each bird has its
different characteristics, and antenna design is great fun. Have as
many different options at hand as you can and see what works best for
you.

Hi all,
I use Orbitron for satellite tracking and get my TLE/KEPS from CelesTrak
and/or Space-Track.
Whenever there is a new launch, I can never figure out which satellites are
"NEW" from the names
given on my list of satellites.
Does Celestrak/Spacetrak update their data as soon as the bird is
launched
our should
I do it manually?
Orbitron has a TLE-NEW.txt file that usually shows the space shuttle
launches
in a format that I know. (example...STS-123)
I hope this makes sense to someone. I'm not sure if I have made myself
clear. hihi
