My .02 about why it was built.
The Powers That Be wanted something that could be
built relatively cheap, and take advantage of what
rides were available.
I'm not real happy with newcomers being introduced to
a flying repeater as "Satellite Operation" either, but
at least *something* got launched in a timely manner.
And like you, I'm pulling for another HEO linear bird!

Excellent. Just curious, where in the sequence are we now? I've lost track.

Actually, on busy passes of AO-51, I find phonetics best because it is often
quite hard to hear weaker stations over the "free for all" that can occur Not
all stations are full quieting into the sat, nor does everyone always have a
great signal on the receiving end. :)

On FM, in my opinion, there is no need for phonetics except for
calls with troublesome letters. Most calls can be heard easily
without using up time with phonetics.

I agree with Cliff. Tha same is true with terrestial repeaters.
If you expect a reply then the accepted term is "CQ" not "listening".

I think STS-123, the upcoming mission, is assembly flight 1 J/A on to
that animation (the Japanese Logistics Module - Pressurized Section,
or JLP, and Dextre, a pretty-freakin'-cool two-armed robot).

thanks and 73, Robert W6RQR
That's really tough Robert. Unless there is some sequencing going on inside
your radio then any RF sensing circuit will mean that the relay contacts
will be hot switched on transmit.
A couple of seriesed limiting PIN diodes may help, but with 100W across them
for a few 10s of milliseconds even that may not be enough to protect the
Pre-amp.
On the preamp side, the design that was published in the journal in August
(2006?) works well and has a noise figure of 0.5dB and is a no tune design.
Details are on g0mrf.freeserve.co.uk
Thanks

I have yet to hear a "CQ" on a repeater here in the US. The normal
practice here is to announce you're "listening", "monitoring", or just
give out your call sign.
I've also heard plenty of people reply to this. :)

John,
Any idea how long it normally takes for ON6MU to respond to requests for
registrations keys. In my case, it has been a couple of weeks, and e-mails,
but so far nothing.

That is difficult to say.
It depends on crew activities and any docking or EVA events. At this point, no
Shuttle or Progress launches are scheduled for that time in June. However,
that assumes that STS-123 and STS-124 launch on time. During field day we
should have Expedition 17 active with
Gregory Chamitoff, KD5PKZ on the ISS.
As we get closer we will hopefully know more.
Hope this helps.

Yes, and hardly anyone uses it...
> Why was [AO51] built??
Because lots of people like to use it from their mobiles, and
their HT's and it is a great way to get into satellites with
innexpensive radios that everyone has.
> Disagree: I learn....
There are lots of aspects to the ham radio hobby. Many people
like different things. Those who like AO51 like it and it is a
great assset for them. Those who like AO7 use it. There is no
need to try to force all users to like only one aspect of
Amateur Satellites. But one thing is certain, we need to reach
out to more ham radio operators and get them to appreciate how
easy it is to communicate via satelites. And every single one
of them has an FM radio.

RS0ISS-4 is the Packet Beacon ID and Digipeater (Sometime RS0ISS-3 depending
on the radio mode configuration). The simple way to use the Digi is use the
alias (ARISS) in your path name which works for both modes.
RS0ISS-11 is ID for the mailbox in the Kenwood D700. You need to have a very
good station to use it in high usage areas due to all the collisions from
ground stations.

I share the frustration of everyone trying to work
AO-51 and AO-27 on a busy weekend pass, but as a
relative newbie I think the FM birds serve a purpose,
in light of the huge cost difference between an FM
only and an all-mode VHF/UHF rig.
If it had not been so easy and inexpensive to work via
AO-51, don't think I would have tried to work any sat.
For me and probably many others, the good experiences
on the FM sats led me to upgrade and work via AO-7 and
VO-52, and I hope more like these are launched soon.
Judging from the crowded state of the FM birds and the
relative lack of activity on the sats with linear
transponders, it seems that, for all their
deficiencies, the FM birds are still a popular choice.
Just need to keep teaching the need for brevity,
clarity of speech, and proper power and antennas.
