Hmm, my TARDIS is down, so won't be able to make those ;) . Got my
satellite gear back on the air after a long hiatus, so looking
forward to throwing a bit of RF at the FM birds. :)
Missed the SO-67 test on Sunday, was out at the time. :(

At this time, I would not rely upon the web site for scheduling as it has
been in out of date for about a week. When it is updated it is often the
next day already.
Just monitor every pass you can. On spec I was monitoring on Nov 1, 2009 on
the 16:45 UTC pass over NA ( web site still had an October schedule ) and
managed a contact with Mark WA8SME ( EN19 Winnipeg to DM08 Lake Tahoe ). We
were the only 2 ops on that whole pass until my LOS.
I can confirm the excellent quality and strong audio but with occasional
cutting out. I had not learned about using FM-N and lower power and mic
gain to prevent that from happening. I have yet to try that throttled-back
configuration.
Enjoy...

I have both vertical and horizontal elements of my 70cm yagi coming into the
shack via separate runs of LM400. They meet in a box with bits of coax for
matching and phasing before going to the radio.
I would like to add a relay to make polarity changes quick and easy. Do I
need to use a specific type of relay or will a garden variety DPDT from
Radio Shack be sufficient?

Hi all!
I just uploaded my satellite QSOs from early July to now to the LoTW. A
total of 158 with a match of 10, or 6.3%. Not very good. I understand that
LoTW is good for DXCC and WAS, but not available to VUCC. This could be why
many satellite ops opt not to partake in this program. It's ashame that
VUCC was never implemented into the LoTW from the get-go. I've asked the
ARRL about this and never received what I would call a justifiable answer
but they did say they were working on offering LoTW to a non-ARRL award late
this year or early 2010. Just my observation.

Good day all,
I would like to know if there are *any* stations operating on the satellites
with linear transponders e.g. on AO-7, that use "fixed uplink, half duplex"
on a regular basis?
Is done, is it allowed or is it actively discouraged?
Feedback will be appreciated.
Kind Regards.

Half duplex, yes, with care given to run appropriately low power levels.
The fixed uplink part is probably being done, but it is counter to
preferred and recommended practice on Mode U/V satellites. It likely
will make little difference where the user load is light, but when the
transponder gets crowded, a fixed uplink sweeps across ~15 khz of
passband and can be disruptive to other users.
If someone is restricted to half duplex, computer aided tuning on both
the uplink and downlink really makes a lot of sense for their ease, and
for staying out of other QSOs.

Greetings All!
Some of you may have already seen or heard about it, but it appears ICOM
recently displayed a new "HF/VHF/UHF" satellite-capable radio at the Tokyo
Ham Fair.
Called the IC-9100, it sports a "satellite" button (just to the upper right
of the screen) so apparently it IS designed to work the birds. No word yet
on when (if ever) it will be sold in the USA....or the price.
Photos are at:

Looks like a nice rig ..... BUT considering the age of the hams today
maybe it is a bit small. I have noticed over the years the rigs get
smaller and smaller. Soon I will need a magnifing glass and a toothpick
just to push the buttons.
What happened to the impressive shacks of the 50's with all the Heath
gear. With the new mulitband rigs and their size, your shack is reduced
to a bigger handheld that you can put away on the shelf until you need
it.....
Sounds like the XYL's are driving the design maybe .....

For VHF/UHF you need proper good quality co-ax relays.
They're not cheap and those available surplus are often 28/48/110V coils.

I have an:
"OSCAR Polarphaser PH2/S 2 meters antenna control system" gathering dust.
Its the blue box type with SWR meter on the front and N type connectors on
the back.
Polarity, anti-clockwise, vertical, clockwise and horizontal, is continuous
via a

The patented design is by GZ HCG, whoever that might be.
Offers please.

Hi Dave,
I think you are referring to the late Bill Sykes G2HCG who used to run/own?
J Beam Antennas in Northampton and very good they were!

Hi Dave, G1OCN
The polarphaser for 2 meters was also described many years ago in OSCAR-NEWS
of AMSAT-UK but unfortunately I don't remember exacly the numbar of the
above issue.
In my opinion it is not easy to use a polarphaser because it requires two
coax lines coming down from the crossed yagi.
In addition using the actual LEO satellites the rate of change of
polarization is very fast during one pass and while operating you have not
the time and one more hand to rotate the dial on the front of polarphaser
to get the strongest signal.
By the way it was very nice to use the polarphaser in 2 meters downlink with
HEO satellites OSCAR-10 and OSCAR-13 because as they were stabilized the
rate of change of polarization was very very slow.
I suggest you to save your polarphaser for P3-D
