Bob. It happens all the time on both the high seas and in the air. Both
planes and ships try and cut the corner as tightly as possible and sometimes
"nick" it...most of the time it is just people who unintentionally got a
little close. Both the FAA and USCG are usually pretty forgiving about it.

The Ares 1-X is part of the latest attempt by NASA to develop a shuttle
followon. There have been quite a few attempts in the past, this one has
gotten farther then most.
The Ares 1 will (if it is built and that is iffy) have a 5 segment solid
rocket booster as its first stage and a second stage with a modified J-2 on
it (the Saturn third and second stage engine).
The 1-x is really a "test" vehicle. The only active part of it is an old
Shuttle SRB (which is a four segment solid), a dummy fifth segment and the
rest is all boilerplate. The flight will last under 2 minutes. So far it
has cost over 600 million dollars. The entire project to date has consumed
9 billion more. The actual vehicle will be as expensive as the shuttle to
launch. (if that can be believed)
There are a number of "what ifs" ...no one has ever human rated a vehicle
with a solid first stage. The USAF looked at doing that with the MX and
figured out that the thing would shake the crew very badly. But the "rocket
scientist" at NASA are smarter then everyone else and they think that they
ahve the pogo issues solved. Some good guesses are that the vehicle will
have pogo of about 10 percent of thrust...that would be a pretty tough ride.
Of course the USAF is not for sure that it wont hit the tower on launch...so
who knows.

I used a small radio shack board, a couple of transistors, and 2 DPDT (could
be SPDT) 5V relays
to duplicate the interface in the G5400B controller in the KR-500, including
the DIN plug connection.
The LVB tracker should easily interface to the G5400B Yaesu rotor controller.

don't see which path loss you assumed, but for 1 AU (149 mill km), I
calculate 286 dB @xx GHz.
Also 3000K seems much to bad.. assume 300K.
So let's add up for 1 AU:
40 dBm (10W) +2x56.4 dBi -286 = -133.2 dBm at RX input
1 Gbit/s assumes 1 GHz bandwidth. 300K is roughly -174 dBm/Hz.
1 GHz = 60dB worse = -116 dBm.
So you end up with -133.2 - (-116) = -17.4 Eb/No.. not good.
If you add 20dB you end up at 2.6 dB Eb/No. Not brilliant, but close.
20dB means 0.1 AU instead of 1 AU = 14.9 Mill km.
I think your result was 4.6E9 m (!), not km.. which is 4.6 mill km.
Should be it, if getting back to your assumed 3000K RX.

Bruce's recent experiments with the AVR port of Plan 13 has reminded
me that I should make a public release of my Python implementation.
I keep thinking that I am going to get to making improvements, but
somehow I never seem to get around to do doing it, so rather than just
delaying, I'll toss it out in its current state and let people
experiment with it. It currently includes a plan 13 module, a module
for converting maidenhead grid squares and a couple of example scripts
(most notably an "elements" script, for fetching elements, and a
"nextpass" script that can be used to find details of the next pass of
a satellite, mostly useful for LEO sats, but which illustrate the use
of the plan 13 module). Feel free to download and use this code for
your own experimentation: it's under an open source license whose only
significant feature is to acknowledge Miller's original Plan13 code.
The code runs under Python 2.5, and can be found at:

I'd be interested in hearing of any adaptations, extensions or uses of
this code.
