Hi guys, must agree with Tom we should all be looking at small pv setups!
here i run 1KW PV charging my stand by bat ! which is some 1500amp ! and 3kw
inverter! ...look about its amazing what is abt on 12v dc!! i also run solar
hot water pan...to heat the water ....paul (2e1eub)

Agree, but think in terms of big panels if you want low cost. I have
Eighteen 1 foot solar panels on my car that produce 215 watts total, but the
cost for small panels was $2400.

Now the cost of a single 3.3' by 5.5' house panel is only $600 and it
produces 225 watts. A 4 to 1 cost savings. So you can get a lot more watts
per dollar by getting a large panel. Though it is a 30 volt panel good for
a 24/28 volt battery system. You can still use it for a 12v system by
charging the batteries in series and using them in parallel or getting a
24VDC to 12VDC converter available at any truck parts store.

 >The grid is vulnerable as a system. We have to stop always thinking
about being connected to or relying on the utility grid. Think in terms
of building an independant 12 volt DC system (low voltage) for the
average dwelling to operate independant of the grid by charging
batteries from solar or wind and utilizing the energy real time or
later from the batteries. It seems everyone has visions of large
expensive rooftop systems but starting small and building up over time
will reduce the utility bill by substitution.
We need to be energy independant on a small scale as well as looking at
the big picture. Small systems can easily run lights, TV?s, radios,
even a small refridgerator for essentials. You would still need the
grid power for large loads like heat, large refridgerators, etc but you
can have a seperate system to rely on if you suffer some calamity.
With the advent of the ?smart? grid, you dont want to be connected to
the grid. Remember, the wires are antennas as well as conducting
electricity. We owe our reliance on a large electrical system to
Nickolai Tesla who developed high voltage alternating current power
systems that won out over Thomas Edisons Direct Current system around
the turn of the last century. The idea was to minmize power loss over
long distances. Therefore we should all promote local or household Low
voltage DC solar or wind systems to reduce the use of grid power and
for much better reliability.
Through the years I have built a very economical system comprised of
several solar panels with a capacity of about 130 watts that
automatically charge 6 large deep cycle and regular batteries from
which I operate some radios , lights and in the event of loss of
utility power, a small refridgerator. I also have a couple of cheap
store bought DC to AC inverters if I need to operate an AC device,
Solar panels have come down in price dramatically and production
capabity is expanding, so start now. Think independant and start small
instead of suffering mega system price hesitance.
A world of 12 volt dc devices are available from hardware, marine,
automotive and internet sources. You just have to start.
Be the first on your block to confuse the lineman who show up during a
power failure. I did.

I posted the above text on the new york times "Green Inc" energy blog
back on september 23, 2009 as a comment to an article regarding solar
power in africa. The internal discharge in a deep cycle battery is only
about 50 milliamps which I consider insignificant.

I dont want to be connected to the grid which I consider "STUPID" and
you dont either. Dont follow, think for yourselves.

Think about this..... brain waves operate up to about 20 cycles per
second, imagine what 60 cycles is doing to you and the world.

Ok, I'm not *trying* to be dense here, but regardless of whether you tie
into the grid, use batteries, or have an off-grid system with no
batteries that only works during the day, what happens to the 30% waste
of generated electricity that is dissipated as heat? What am I missing?

Something you *all* must be aware of, those transformers on the pole
work both ways: 7200VAC down to 240VAC and 240VAC back to 7200VAC. If
you get a lineman out there working on a phase he thinks is not hot and
he gets seriously injured or killed, you will be liable. I'm *not*
saying this to discourage you, but to make sure you use a licensed
electrician to install a proper automatic disconnect switch. Alabama
Power requires an automatic disconnect.

How can you state that it is vulnerable without stating exactly the nature
of that which threatens it?

We have to stop always thinking
> about being connected to or relying on the utility grid.

You mean stop using an economical, well tested solution to power and spend
much more re-inventing the wheel and ending
up with a much less cost effective solution.

Think in terms
> of building an independant 12 volt DC system (low voltage)

although we know that distribution at a higher voltace is both cheaper and
more efficient.

Small systems can easily run lights, TV???s, radios,
> even a small refridgerator for essentials.

But not the SAME lights, TV etc, that we already have. More expense buying
two of everything, one for mains voltage and
one for 12 volts.

You would still need the
> grid power for large loads like heat, large refridgerators,

To run you life support systems. Freezers for food, heat, water pumps.......
You're only proposing "self generated" to run the small luxuries that nobody
NEEDS.

Remember, the wires are antennas

And the wires that distribute your 12V supply are somehow NOT antennas?

We owe our reliance on a large electrical system to
> Nickolai Tesla

Thanks Nikolai. You did a great job.

The idea was to minmize power loss over
> long distances. Therefore we should all promote local or household Low
> voltage DC solar or wind systems

So you reduce losses in the grid system by not using it.
That doesn't reduce losses, it just means that you are not affected by them.

> Through the years I have built a very economical system comprised of
> several solar panels with a capacity of about 130 watts

You'd have problems powering a good set of headphones with that.
My standby is going to be a 25KW generator and a tank of propane.

> I dont want to be connected to the grid which I consider "STUPID" and
> you dont either. Dont follow, think for yourselves.

The grid is not stupid, it is inanimate. The grids operators might, in your
opinion be stupid.
What gives you the authority to decide what I WANT? You might think you know
what's best for me but I don't want that.

So after all that, you're just some mickey mouse GREEN ENVIROMENTALIST on
your campaign trail.

Greetings to all,

I would like to let anyone who is interested in working Iceland know?that
from Sept.?28 through Oct. 5th 2009?I will be operating
every?daytime/evening FM satellite pass I can between 10:00 and 01:00 UTC
from Iceland.? Please keep in mind that the weather in Iceland can be pretty
extreme, and my primary reason for being here with my wife is to tour, so I
will not be on every pass, but most days I will work many passes.

Equipment on this end is a 3w TH-D7AG with Arrow?Antenna and headset for
full duplex work.? I am updating my satellite log daily on my QRZ page.? The
log includes both North America and Europe so far...

The volcanic ground along with the almost complete lack of trees?(and
buildings outside of Reykjavik) make working the low passes easy, so do not
be discouraged if you see a low pass listed for Iceland...you?just may work
me anyway.? I have made several?QSOs on passes under 4 degrees maximum
elevation.

If you are in an artic location or africa and think you have a shot at
working me, I would be specifically interested in working you and would ask
that you email me directly for a sked.? Everyone else, please just look for
me on the birds....I am on quite? abit.

Leaving EM70 this morning for EL79 territory around Panama City for possible
2 days before heading west. I will try on get on at least 1 of the 3 FM
birds during those 2 days . Looking at the Grid Map, seems EL79 has pretty
small land mass, so probably not alot of activity that way. Again, if you
want a QSL to confirm, just mail direct to homebase address in CA, or
eQSL.cc and I will confirm.

I have seen split screens on NASA TV, usually a day or two after
launch. A quick you-tube search revealed this.

Have you tried going to their site and see if it is available as a
sample? I do that a lot with them if I want to try a new unit or
experiment without buying a large number. I don't think I have actually
bought anything from them except where I needed quantities.

Well I suppose that's a start but it would be good to see it "live"; I
guess NASA is not as confident as the Russians that a launch will be
successful so they delay any inside shots!

Everything was proceeding marvelously last night at the Associated
Radio Amateurs of Long Beach (CA) meeting. A few folks showed up early
as we worked the 0053 GMT pass of AO-51 from outside the meeting room.
We then moved inside for my presentation.

Since my wife is in finishing a month-long trip to Tibet, I left my
phone "on" in buzz mode in case she called or sent text messages. In
the middle of my show, my phone buzzes. I calmly sneak a look at the
phone, and was pleasantly surprised to see a QSL from XE3DX David
Maciel - one of the contacts we made earlier!

Oh, the audience was properly impressed!

THANK YOU, David! And thanks to the others that made that demo a
success.

PocketSat freeware or PocketSat+ inexpensive registered and supposed to
calculate faster

On any old Palm that you can pick up for $5 at a flea market of get for free
by asking. Millions of these PDA's are sitting in drawers unused because
folks have graduated to smart phones, crack berries iphones etc.

I use a Palm IIIxe black and white. Color would be nicer.

You need Palm One Quick Install and a serial or IR port to update KEPS on
the Palm from a PC.

The little Win XP netbooks are hard to beat. I've seen them as cheap as
199, they will run SatPC32, and even do email and websurfing via wifi or
a tethered phone. Standard USB ports make life nice too.
