Congratulations to Omar, XE1AO, for achieving Satellite VUCC
#182 and to George, WA5KHB, for confirming 225 Grids for his
VUCC! Both are recognized in the October, 2009, issue of QST
on page 94.
Also Jerry, VE6AB, is shown with his "CJU" antenna on page 76.
Plans for this simple antenna were in February QST. This
antenna is also used by Rob, KD4ZGW/M, our over-the-road truck
driver, who has handed out many rare grids during his travels across
the United States.
If you are just getting into satellites and are not hearing the
birds very well, the CJU antenna may be just the ticket to making
your first contact.
73,
John K8YSE

Danny and the list,
The machine that hosts the oscar.dcarr.org website was recently
compromised by hackers. It has taken some effort to fully clean/restore
the machine. Please bear with us as we get everything happy again...

Just a thought coming from the North West.? There are lots of short VHF/UHF
sprint type contests.? They may only last a few hours.? Have "we" considered
a similar sprint type contest where the exchange would be your grid square
and your AMSAT member number.? No AMSAT number?? Maybe you should get one.?
Most of the exchanges on AO-51 are contest like already.? The winning prize
would be a attaboy.? Going back in my corner now.

Hi AMSATs,
I like to share with you some news about my succesfull experiments with my
tinny transponder. I managed it to work with 23cm as input frequency :)
The changes are minor,? just a few components to be changed and the input
filter needs to be changed. I have to do some more testing but all looks
very well for having an mode-LU linear transponder.
I just heared about another launch with several "beep"-sats on it.
When checking the Satellite Status List on the AMSAT-NA website, you need to
search very well to find any satellite which has an uplink frequency. As
active AMSAT operator I already deleted most of the kepler lines in the
kepler list, as these are all "beep" sats which I can not use.
Lucky thing is that I not have much time to be active on satellites, but
every once in a while when I check the satellite list my face gets more and
more :(
In the past we had a few satellites, but they were very usefull (to AMSAT
hams)...
Now we have many satellites, but only few are usefull (to AMSAT hams)...
Now up to my next project... a credit-card size Mode-B FM transponder :o)

Isn't this like going:
"My car was broken into."
"You need five point harness for seatbelts."
Without knowing what happened to David's machine, this is completely
useless. If the attack happened via another path PHP sessions would be
as about as useful as putting a toll booth in front of an open field.

Hello,
Very good copy of SwissCube over Brazil on orbit # 12.
Another signal was also loud but I did not identify.
Here the audios of these receptions and video of the PSLV-C14 launch:

I have a question regarding digital birds.
What space objects can I pick up with a TNC, and what birds do I need a
special modem for ?
Some that come to mind, that I can use a TNC for are
+ ISS 1200 Baud AFSK
+ PCSAT 1200 Baud AFSK
Is the aim to have birds launch that obey
+ AX25 encoded packets
+ 1200 or 9600

Hi all,
After being off the air for about a month, I recently made some changes to
the satellite setup. I upgraded from the TH-D7A(G) HT to the TM-D710A
mobile dual bander. Yes, a bit bulkier, but worth its weight. Anyhow, I
know many sat operators use the Arrow antenna setup, like what I've been
using the past 7 or so months with great results. However, I've always
known that the diplexer that comes with the unit is reather lossy. From
some reports I've read as much as 2.65dB of loss. That's almost half of
whats being received or transmitted being thrown away. When I layed out the
new portable setup I made it an issue to "lose" the diplexer and put one in
line that would perform better. I purchased the Comet CF-416. It's loss is
about .26dB. A considerably less amount by far and if needed in other
applications it can handle more power than the 10 watts alotted for the
Arrow's diplexer. I also bought some good quality RG-58 coax, only 6 feet
in length, for both 145 and 440, so there isn't much loss from this. About
.6dB according to the data sheet.
After the assembly and installation was complete, on air usage was next.
AO-27 had a fairly decent pass to the east of the QTH with a max elevation
of 24 degrees. I've remembered how the passes sounded previously at this
elevation so I could get a mental comparison. As the bird's timer turned
the digital transmission on I noticed one thing immediately, the signal was
clearer and no hiss. The analog timer swtiched on and the voices became
copiable. The signal appeared to be a bit stronger than the old setup with
the Arrow antenna but the most remarkable improvement was from the time I
started to receive the signal to near LOS, it never once dropped out! It
almost appeared as though I changed my linear antenna to a CP with a preamp.
I figured this is too good to be true. I then decided to test it with AO-51
and see how well that bodes. I noticed I was copying the signal closer to
the horizon than the previous set up and again the same results with no drop
outs, except for the one time the house blocked the signal for about 20
seconds.
So if anybody is considering improving their current Arrow antenna, please
do so by getting a better diplexer. They are not expensive, $40 to $60, and
of course some decent coax, short runs are better but give yourself enough
slack so you don't cut yourself short!
See you on the birds!

It's time for another College Satellite night! Expect to hear many Oscar
capable NA college club stations on the air Thursday evening Oct. 1st-2nd
(NA local times) from 22:00 UTC to 0500 UTC for this special event.
College clubs are getting priority on the QRP AO-51 repeater that night
(uplink: 145.880 MHz FM. downlink: 435.150 MHz FM). Please work each
college station but afford them the ability to take calls and make as many
QSOs as possible.
Club stations will also be on other birds so make as many contacts if you
can, on each bird. We have encouraged college stations to QSL all the
stations they work during the event as we (either through AMSAT or a college
group) are planning on creating an award for working college club stations
on satellite.
Make sure to e-mail or call as many hams that you know associated with
college ham radio clubs so that they will know about this special event and
get on the air.usage and NA-wide involvement is important. While we are
focusing on North American activity let me know of interest and
participation from other parts of the globe, e-mail me off-list at
<mailto:jgarlitz@xxx.xxx> jgarlitz@xxx.xxx.
