I had a wonderful time Tuesday and Wednesday (April 22 & 23)
operating two passes of AO-51 and one pass of SO-50 from the Alamo in
San Antonio, Texas. I was using my W32A HT and an AL800 telescoping
antenna. For one pass I was only 50 feet from the front door of the
Alamo, and for other passes I stayed across the street approximately
150 feet from the front door due to the presence of Department of
Public Safety (DPS) officers that looked like they might arrest
me. Both of these locations were within the walls of the fortified
Alamo at the battle.

Stations worked were W7JPI, W5VG, W4KI, XE2RV, KI5FIA, XE2BHL,
WB2VUN, WA8SME, W6ASL, K6YK, WA6DIR, W6ZQ, and XE2HWB and I have a
special QSL card made up for the operation. This was my third
satellite operation from EL09sk, the Alamo, and on future trips to
San Antonio I hope to operate again from the Alamo.

My memory says that someone wrote a very nice article on using an FT-817 with
satellites and used AO-51 as an example. However, I can not remember the
magazine that contained the article and can not find the note that mentioned
it. Hopefully there is someone whose brain has more working cells than
mine, can tell me where the article is located.

I think KO4MA wrote one which should be up on the site. I have a pair
of them I use for my operations and for satellite demos.

What questions do you have ?

Page 77-79 of the FT-817 Manual provides info on setting up for
tracking Leo's. Their example is for UO-14 but just subsitute AO-51
frequencies.

Well, AO7 is in and out of the sun, and powered only by the solar panels.

And he is something of a seer if he can predict the modes, and I
would like to see them listed here??

Dale and Pat, I'd like to add a few more comments. I know the passes are
short, but
I've observed a lot of time wasted by multiple stations transmitting at the
same time,
not letting a station finish their exchange, and the use of excessive power.
The handheld
stations don't have a chance when big guns blasting away with gobs of power.
The other night a K1...
station was obliterated and stomped on. How many "1" calls do you hear
these days?

Please folks, especially on the busy FM birds. A chaos is inevitable, but
we can minimize it if we...
1. Run the minimum power necessary to reach the satellite - 5 watts or less
if your radio allows.
2. Listen for the weak station operators.
3. Operate full duplex so you can hear the downlink while transmitting.
4. Be patient and let others complete their exchange. If we stomp on each
other nobody wins.
5. If you hear multiple stations (usually just a grunge sound) on the
downlink, stop transmitting.
Nobody makes a contact when everybody transmits at the same time.
6. If you can't hear the downlink, don't keep transmitting. Just because
you can't hear the bird
doesn't mean that the bird can't hear you and that you are not interfering
with others.
7. We all mess up from time to time, so be patient with us.
8. Oh, and did I say, "Use the minimum power necessary....?"

And yes, I'm probably preaching to the choir, but I guess we all need to be
reminded from time to time.

I have been diligently waiting and trying to work the XE stations. It is as
exciting for me
as I suppose it for them. The other night I had a call from XE2BRL I was
not sure on
his suffix so I asked him to repeat to be sure and when he came back he was
covered
up by QRM by other stations trying to get him that I never was able to
complete the
QSO or grid squares. I know the passes are short but for fringe area to
fringe are on
the foot print I sure wish folks would give some consideration. I try to
keep my
transmissions short and consider other folks needs over mine. I will keep
trying though.
I do have confirmation from Japan on the other hand... That was pretty
cool.

Try the Summer 2007 issue of CQ/VHF. The cover photo shows a set of Field
Day Satellite antennas. The article is not about 817's in patricular, but two
of them are used as the basis of a complete multimode satellite station. I do
use the FT-817 on all of the FM birds as well for demonstrations. It works
quite well and, as someone else pointed out, the setup instructions for this
are
in the back of the FT-817 manual.

I'm looking for assistance from anyone who is successfully using the LVB
Tracker with the UBS RS-232 simulator drivers, either SatPC32 or Nova tracking

I'm also using a G-5400 rotor.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Petersburgh a few days ago heading out of the Baltic then through the English
Channel out into the Atlantic and then to South AmericaRegards Robert G8ATE
