My thanks to the AO-51 control team for this week's schedule, which includes
activation of 145.880/435.150 for QRP operation. There is another week of
this "QRP Pair" coming up later in the month. I hope more of you will take
the time to see just how little power it takes for effective communication
on AO-51 or any of the FM satellites, for that matter.
On the AO-51 pass here from roughly 22:30 UTC to 22:45 UTC, KD8CAO and I
completed a contact using HTs with whip antennas. Doug was using?a Pryme
RD-98, and I was using the Diamond SRH-789 telescoping whip. Anyone who has
an HT with a general coverage receiver ought to check out the Diamond whip
because it brings the shortwave broadcast bands alive on the radios from
Yaesu (VX-3R and VX-7R) and Kenwood (TH-F6A)?I've tried it with. In
addition, it works extremely well on the satellites. I didn't?pick up?the
RD-98 for satellite use, but it is comparable in performance to Pryme's
satellite-popular AL-800 telescoping whip. Pryme, by the way, claims the
same gain numbers for the RD-98 as for the AL-800. I had an AL-800, and my
RD-98 performs at least as well as it did. I prefer the SRH-789, which has
an SMA connector,?because of its versatility - and it's more rigid than the
RD-98 in use. Diamond also makes a BNC version of the antenna, the RH-789.
On the next pass of AO-51, which hits me beginning at about 00:10 UTC, I'll
be back on the crappy ol' Elk dual-band log periodic - but I'll be running
50 milliwatts out instead of the 5 watts I just used with the whip. I intend
to run 50 mW and the Elk for the remainder of the weekend on AO-51.
Experience suggests that I need at least 8 degrees of elevation to make the
satellite on .05-watt, but I almost made it through the other day when AO-51
was below 7 degrees. A good contact at that low angle will represent a new
"miles per watt" record for me, and I hope to get there.

Another Saturday without work at the office, another quick road
trip to an unusual Arizona grid. I will head west toward grid
DM24 for the afternoon AO-27 passes, the late afternoon SO-50
pass around 0030 UTC, and the afternoon/evening AO-51 passes on
the normal 145.920/435.300 MHz transponder. I think I may have
located a spot that straddles the DM23/DM24 boundary in western
Arizona, with a good view of the sky for satellite work. If it
looks good when I get out there tomorrow, I will park on that
grid boundary. The area I'm looking to work from in DM24 or on
the DM23/DM24 boundary would probably be in La Paz County, a very
sparsely-populated western Arizona county - for anyone looking
to work counties via satellite.
I worked from DM23/DM24 last year, from a different location on
the California side of the Colorado River. In July 2008, I worked
from DM24/DM25 further north near Bullhead City AZ and Laughlin NV.
Both DM23 and DM24 are rarely heard via satellite, but DM24 appears
to be more rare than DM23 in recent years.

Standing behind the reflector connect first one reflector element Vertical
with the U bolt attachement to your left side Then mount a drive element
Vertical with the U bolt attachement to your left side.The driving element
must be mounted with the gamma match arm looking upword and the N
connector looking in your direction i.e. the back of the antenna.
The rest is automatic and straigforward because the Horizontal driving
element will be mounted after the Vertical one closer to the satellite with
the gamma match arm appearing on your right side with the N connector
looking on the back and the U bolt mounted in the lower part of the boom .
Since the driven element is 50 ohm as adjusted in the factory connect a 1/4
electrical wavelength of 75 ohm coax cable to each driven element and
connect it in parallel to a T connector to get an impedance transformation
of about 50 ohm
For RHCP connect to the Horizontal driven element a 1/4 electrical
wavelenght of 50 ohm coax delay line using a double female barrel.
If you add the delay line to the vertical harm then you get LHCP
The A432-20T is a very BAD antenna and because of too many connectors
(one T and one double female ) you will experience very high losses in 70 cm
In a separate email I have sent to you the schematic diagram for the phasing
harness and while it is for the A144-20T the concept is the same

Weather permitting I will be operating on the
EM88/EM98 grid boundary in West Virginia on Sunday,
September 20th. The current forecast is a 50% chance
of rain so it might not work out for all passes. I'll
try to operate on the following passes:

West Virginia is hilly and the hills are covered with trees.
Although Google Earth etc. can give you some idea of what to
expect, you just don't know until you get there and see for
yourself. For those in the West, AO-27 at 2022Z and SO-50
at 2319Z will offer the best chances to work me. It will be
sunset around the end of the last SO-50 pass. Operations on
AO-51 will be on the non-QRP pair, 435.300/145.92. If the
grid boundary doesn't work out, I'll focus on finding a spot
in EM88 first. If conditions permit, I might then operate from
EM98. Hopefully the grid boundary will work out.
My progress enroute can be monitored on aprs.fi or findu.com
using k8yse-8. There are no digi's near the grid boundary
location but you never know until you get there. I plan to
have another radio on 145.825 and could be digi'd through the
ISS during the 1911Z, 2047Z, 2224Z and 0000z passes. The ISS
radio will use k8yse-9. It's about a 4 hour trip each way.
There is no need to send or request a qsl card. I will send a
card to everyone that I have in my log. EM88 is fairly rare so
this should be a good one for grid chasers, especially for those
in the western states. Thanks to all of you who have operated from
grids away from your home QTH. Hopefully you will benefit from
this operation as I did from many of yours. EM97 may be a
possibility in October if you need that one.

This refers to original material from Kaluga anticpating a beacon frequency
of 435.353 which was not used last year. Obviously it's switchable.
I have not checked the keps for RS30 for some time but I remember they were
hard to find. Are we sure the mystery bird isn't RS-30?

hi, i am new to this and have heard alot of stuff that i know is data or
telemertry
but not sure what kind or mode is TX'ed in the 435-436 mhz area from

or know what decoder to use to see what it is, if not in CW?as you said some

I can't get any working keps for rs-30 into satpc32, it just crashes after
what looks like an iterative calculation that doesn't work.
This is true for the RS-30 keps today at:

and for the YUBILEINY keps (same satellite) just uploaded onto the bb.
I assume that either there is something fundamentally wrong with the keps
from whatever source, or that the orbit falls outside that scanned by satpc32.

Modify the celestrak.sqf file and add the line below
http://www.celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/tle-new.txt
Save it and go to 'update keps' and klick on that link and chose update.
That chose the tle-new.txt in the satelite menu and add the satellites you
want.

I'm travelling at the moment so can't check any frequencies but has anyone
listened around 29.3-29.5 MHz to see if anythings there ? - I live in hope !
I always wondered what they had on RS-27 - Baumanetz-175 - which was lost in
the DNEPR launch failure of July 2006.

Just for curiosity I would like to know why the AMSAT WSR-Weekly Satellite
Report in Part 3 (3) lists the frequencies of the Non Operational Satellites
including AO40 while long time ago the Keps for AO40 has been removed

All of that information is available to you, just in 2 separate locations.
The sat name, launch date, frequency/mode, and keps are all at the
amsat.orgwebsite, and the activity can be found at
oscar.dcarr.org. As far as getting the information updated on these sites
with the new satellite, you must remember that they are both volunteer run,
and the updates have to fit in the schedule of the volunteers who run the
sites.
