Hi!

I made a quick drive up the I-17 freeway yesterday to the Sunset
Point rest area, about 50 miles/80km north of Phoenix in grid
DM34we. I had intended on trying my hand in the ARRL VHF contest
that was in progress, using the all-mode gear I typically use on
VO-52. No luck there, but I did work two passes from the rest
area (one each, on AO-27 and SO-50) before a thunderstorm prevented
me from trying one more SO-50 pass around sunset. I only logged 17
QSOs between those two passes. This spot is close enough to the
Phoenix area where I can return to it for future satellite activity
on short notice.

I think most of you who worked me up there yesterday already have
grid DM34 confirmed from my past trips, where I've worked from
several different locations in this grid including a couple of grid
boundaries (DM34/DM35 and DM34/DM44) in the last couple of years.
If you would like to receive a QSL card confirming a QSO from
yesterday, please e-mail me directly. If you're in the log, I'll
send out a card.

I noticed yesterday while AO-7 was in mode B over the US there were several
stations who were working the VHF contest this weekend.? The downlinks sigs
were LSB and obviously oblivious they were uplinking to AO-7. ? I emailed some
of them, maybe we can create some accidental satellite aficianados.

Certainly word needed to local clubs, vhf clubs, contesting clubs about
this anamoly. Indeed they are oblivious to where their signal is going
and how. Too little attention is paid to band plans. Good snooping
Bob.

I heard this during the ARRL UHF contest back in August as well and found it
amusing. They are correct, though, and not violating the bandplan as the AO7
uplink is in the weak signal part of the band-that is what happends when your
satellites lives for 35 years-band plans change

It would be nice if some of these stations discovered that their terrestial
equipment will work fine on the satellites, that is how I became an
accidential satellite op.

Actually Larry that was the band plan back in 1974.? Who would think we would
still have it 35 years later.? The satellite is older than many the the ops.?
Looking foward the the "rebirth" of AO-40 (sobsob).

Hi Andrew,

AO-51 is essentially a "next generation" PACSAT. Each craft runs its own OS,
which are all similar. Google Harold Price NK6K and you'll find this link:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/sats/nk6k/msatmain.html It gives a few important
tidbits so you can see the general picture of satellites, OS, file systems,
etc.

The size of the upload depends on the satellite; usually there are multiple
files, and their sizes vary. In the end, it's something under 1MB in total.
Each piece of code adds more functions. So, it's a flying computer with CPU
and memory and the OS and applications have to be uploaded and started...not a
foreign concept for anybody that has installed an application!

Most satellites these days will probably use a the 9600 baud "standard" data
rate for uploading.

When you only get a few minutes to upload/test just a few times each day, it
takes a while to pull the whole thing off using a 9600 baud RF connection.

The good news is that Gould is really good at it :)

Mark N8MH

In addition to that link, the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine:

has copies of K5OE's former web site spanning several years. You can see

What are the implications of not getting the upload to work ?

Is there standby memory you check and then swap to the working program ?

Hi Andrew,

The satellite won't work ;) That's a broad question. If the satellite is
healthy hardware-wise, an upload would be re-attempted (multiple times you can
be sure).

If the uploads don't work--it's time to debug and determine why the uploads
aren't working, etc.

>Is there standby memory you check and then swap to the working program ?

In theory, if specific memory locations become useless, they might be
programmed around. But life is probably not so simple!

So with all the space on 70cm.....

The voice beacon is on the same frequency as AO-51. Is that right ?

Has any one had a problem like that.???

I put a spare control on it and indicator

Works fine and is accurate.

All,

A few months ago I corresponded with the AMSAT-SA webmaster about that.
I think it is a typo and the correct frequency is 435.350. As far as the
145.880 frequency being the same as the QRP uplink on AO-51, they are
correct in using it. AO-51 is not coordinated on 145.880, and they are.
If it causes problems, we'll just have to use a different uplink for the
QRP repeater. The 2m satellite subband is very crowded, and there are
frequencies in use for cubesats and such that most amateurs are not even
aware of.

Drew,

Interesting, and good to know. The flexibility of AO-51 gives us lots of
options if needed.

Hi, Drew!!

Lots of amateur satellite frequency information is available to
everyone. Suggest seeing:

http://www.amsat.org.uk/iaru/

http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/satellites/

We have the IARU coordination process to try to work out frequency
planning issues, most times before launch!!

I hope this helps.

What we can do is to live out our lives as best we can with purpose,
and with love, and with joy. We can use each day to show those who
are closest to us how much we care about them, and treat others with
the kindness and respect that we wish for ourselves. We can learn
from our mistakes and grow from our failures. And we can strive at
all costs to make a better world, so that someday, if we are blessed
with the chance to look back on our time here, we know that we spent
it well; that we made a difference; that our fleeting presence had a
lasting impact on the lives of others.
