Hello Stefano,
I experimented with a few crystals on LVB Trackers and got the best results
with the one closest to 4.00 MHz. A number of things are run off of timers
that are based on having a 4.0 MHz clock, so a 4.4 MHz clock will make 9600
bps communication difficult.

Thanks Allen,
my unit is not really a new unit that does not run, it is a homebrewed unit
on a what we call "1000 fori" board (a board with holes that you have to
wire).
Today I changed Xtal with a 4.433.... and tried the in circuit programming
(picprog procedure).
Finally, when I understood how the reset button must be used, I succeeded in
program the pic.
Rs232 communication seems to answer something to the command C+ENTER, but
what I receive are characters without sense.
At this point I think the only thing wrong is the not exact frequency of my
XTAL.
No LCD yet.
I add also Howard to email, in case he would be so kindly to comment even on
a homebrewed LVB board.
Ciao, Stefano.

Oggetto: RE: [amsat-bb] lvb tracker circuit -- xtal?
I don't know. I had a problem with mine not working after I upgraded it. I
had an earlier revision and I wanted to upgrade it to the latest and
greatest. I sent the PIC and the revised hex file from G6LVB on his web
page. to a friend. My friend has the capability to program PICs. He
reprogrammed it, but the circuit wouldn't work. It wouldn't oscillate. So I
wrote to G6LVB describing my problem and he sent back what I sent to you. In
my case I had a working unit, but I broke it with the new upgraded version
hex code. G6LVB sent me the additional code as I sent to you. My friend
added the code and the PIC worked. I think the main problem was that the
oscillator input to the PIC wasn't set. Apparently it must be done in the
first four bits sent to the PIC. This gets the PIC clock input receiving the
clocking signal and the PIC runs. The PIC can be configured to use an xtal,
RC, and one or two other clock inputs. With the xtal the PIC can be
configured to
provide an oscillator with the 4 MHZ xtal.
I could ask my friend what FPW=on is. I am not any kind of an expert here. I
have learned all of this by talking with smart people. I had to go to G6LVB.
Don't be afraid to email him and inquire. He seems to be a friendly guy and
willing to help. I take it that your unit is new and hasn't worked yet.
My friend is Harold Hallikainen, WA6FDN. He is at Hallikainen.org. He is
another nice guy. He is one of my resources for knowledge of these things.
Harold programmed my PIC externally. Howard expected these to be programmed
with his software, but I don't remember why I originally didn't program it
that way. Maybe I couldn't get it to work for me. Harold priginally
programmed my PIC. I believe we also had the configure problem then also. I
remember trying diffrent xtals and maybe capacitors. The prblem turned out
to be these first four configuration bits. If you take a look at the data
sheet for the PIC I think you will find something about these config bits.
I/m sorry that I could not have been more help here.
73,
Allen WB6RWU

Got mine today as well and then worked WA8MSE from his home QTH for a new grid
on AO27 today also! Satellite ops are the first group I have encounted who
will send out a direct QSL (at their expense for postage) just for an email
request. What an impressive group of ops.

Randy,
Do take a look at the AlphaSpid RAK-1 rotator. They are not cheap, but far
stronger than the Kenpro/Yaesu units, and can be controlled by the usual
computer programs. Recently MFJ has started importing them, though they are
hard to find on the web site except in the catalog.

I'll offer an explanation on why I ask for just an e-mail to get a
QSL from my road-trip operating...
As I started on the satellites in 2006 and 2007, John KD6PAG
from northern California would take long road trips across much
of the western USA. He wouldn't ask for QSLs or even SASEs
for his QSOs on the road. John's only request - if you worked
him during one of those trips, send him a QSL card if you work
him when he's close to home (grids CM87 or CM88 in northern
California). There are others that follow similar approaches, but
the way KD6PAG handled his road-trip QSLing works well for
me. Unfortunately, I have not heard KD6PAG on the air in over
a year. A shame. A good op, and certainly good for helping
increase activity on the birds and confirmed grids in many
operators' logbooks.
As you've seen from my recent road trips, and others have seen
in the past year or so, I'm following that theme. Sure, QSL card
printing and postage costs money, but I'm already spending for
fuel and other expenses to go to these places. Whether it is for
one day or part of a larger trip, I'm not going out there to get any
rewards that could ever come close to balancing my expenses.
I enjoy operating on the satellites, and I'm returning the favor that
operators like KD6PAG have done in the past. Some will send
me QSL cards with SASEs requesting my card(s), and I do
appreciate that. A few will even send along some postage stamps
to help with the postage for my QSLing after a road trip. I don't
solicit that, but it is appreciated. If I want QSL cards for any of
my QSOs, whether I'm on from some location in or near Phoenix
or on the road, I'll send out my QSL card with an SASE in the
hopes of getting the other station's QSL card.
Contrary to a recent comment here on the -BB, grid expeditions can
often be the most orderly of passes you can hear on the FM birds.
How else can stations in the unusual grid (or grids) work 20 or more
stations in a pass? I've worked as many as 28 on one 15-minute
AO-51 pass, answering calls from those interested in the grid(s) I
am in and calling other stations that happened to be on the pass
but didn't call me. More than a few of those stations I've worked
when on the road have been relatively new satellite operators. This
is in addition to other stations working each other as I listen on the
same passes. Yes, there are some passes with a rare grid on that
will be chaotic (i.e., K5D). There are other chaotic passes that do
not have anyone operating from a rare or unusual grid. That
happens from time to time on the radio, and that's not limited to the
FM satellites. You hear more of that on HF if there's a DXpedition
on from a rare place, or during a contest. It happens, we deal with
it, and try to have fun as we go along.
Hope to hear you on more in the near future, maybe as I travel to
other places. 73!

A trouble occurs on FO-29 CW and Transponder now.
The control station tries for restoration hard.
They say as follows.
We plan the next test use until Monday.
28 Aug, 12:03 UTC
28 Aug, 22:10 UTC
29 Aug, 21:15 UTC
30 Aug, 22:05 UTC
We may not turn on a transmitter by the influence such as buildings
depending on a direction of AOS at the time of the schedule.
The amateur station who wants to use the transponder please perform
uplink after hearing the CW telemetry of FO-29.
FO-29 doubles with a receiver for communication without being equipped
with the receiver for exclusive use of the command.
When many stations do uplink during command work, please understand it
because it takes many time when we turn on the transponder.

Is there a place where amateurs can have a look at what the status is of
the planned actions?
And maybe offer there help, the last year this has been done a couple of
times with for example COMPASS-1.

Hi guyz. In private e-mails a couple of folks have indicated that they need
grid EM94 in South Carolina. I'm going to get a very early start on
Saturday, 08/29/09, so as to be in EM94 to try to hit the AO-51 pass @ about
11:19Z. I think it'll work. (Yea, I know that's *really* early, but the
next pass I could hit won't be until mid-late afternoon -long after I need
to be at my destination.) I plan on being there absent unforeseen
circumstances, e.g., rain.
Pls QSL as per previous message.

If you have the money the?AlphaSpid is a very strong and?well engineered unit.
Probably last for many years.
The unit I got runs on AC or DC. I built a?dedicated 24V AC supply for mine,
nothing more complicated than?a big toriodal transformer in a box with switch,
fuses, and an "on" ?light. Better than running it off the?radio DC?supply.
If its available,?get the "mouse" control with it. They have used a?computer
mouse and connected to the up/down and left right controlls. Its very neat to
use on the operating desk.
As in WA4SCA's post mine works fine with automatic satellite tracking.

Randy,
Do take a look at the AlphaSpid RAK-1 rotator.? They are not cheap, but far
stronger than the Kenpro/Yaesu units, and can be controlled by the usual
computer programs.? Recently MFJ has started importing them, though they are
hard to find on the web site except in the catalog.
