Hello Bob and group:
I must say that the TH-F6 is the best handheld for satellite use I?ve owned.
Although it isn't full duplex it is possible to work the FM birds pretty
well. The big plus regarding this radio is the SSB RX mode. It is the only
HT I know usable to work the AO-16 in voice mode VHF-FM uplink / UHF SSB
downlink. Additionally I have used the TH-F6 as the RX part to work the
linear birds from my mobile station.
You can see the TH-F6 in action working the FO-29 from mobile here:
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_EB4DKA%20via%20FO29%20d
esde%20movil.html
(note that I am using the handheld with the CJU antenna)
Some years ago I've used it with success in the AO-40. Here is a video of
the F6 receiving the AO-40 with a DB6NT downconverter attached to a 60 cm
dish:
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_Kenwood%20THF7%20recibi
endo%20el%20AO40.html
And another great thing is the looong lasting battery.
Best 73,
Pedro EB4DKA

If you have not called me for reservations for the AMSAT/TAPR Banquet,
please do so as soon as possible. Just sending an email is not enough. I

Hello Nate et al....
As I read through your website I see that you are responsible for the ground
station. If so, then performing your "ridgeline" tests should be followed by
attempts to track already existing satellites that utilize frequencies close
to your downlink.
After you have "found" your "ridge" transmitter, and gotten a feeling as to
the sensitivity of your ground receiver, if it seems close to reasonable,
let us know and we will provide help finding existing orbiting targets you
can test your system with.
It sounds like the satellite antenna is out of your control at this time...

This is not an uncommon problem. Cable channel 18 (I think) is right in
the middle of the 2 meter band. If the cable system has a leak or the
customer has a leak in the house, they will pick you up on cable. Unless
running a kilowatt, it is not likely your problem. I do know that the
coax cable connectors that people can buy from Radio Shack or others
that slip on instead of screw on have caused all types of problems. Try
working with your neighbor and check his coax cables throughout the home
usage and insure that are tight and not the slip-on type. If all seems
well, then it is likely that the cable company has a leak at one of
their cable junctions or amplifiers.
Also tune around for any unknown weak signals on two meters that do not
appear to go away. If you hear any, you might wander around with a
handi-talkie and see if you can isolate the problem. Remember, you are
operating two-meters and are licensed to do so. The cable companies must
protect the two meter frequencies from being interfered with and for
them not to interfere. The key here is to be civil and work with them to
show them the error of their ways.

I think 145.250 is right where you will find the carreir of that
cable TV channel. If you hear QRM there, then trace it down and
that is the leakage point that is letting it out, and your
signal in...
Good luck. It is not easy..

Need to find out if they are amplified speakers. I find the best way to
get rid of this problem is one or all of the following:
1. Run shielded cables from sound board to speakers.
2. Put ferrite beads or toroid cores on the speaker wires.
3. See if problem occurs if something is plugged into the line-in
4. Find out if the speakers pick you up without being plugged
into the sound board.
5. If only in sound board, check on mixer settings to see if
you are coming into the
wave, line-in, cd, etc. This might help you to isolate.
6. Be sure your equipment and shack grounds are good.
Hope this helps are gives you some ideas.

Channel 18 analogue cable tv is smack dab in the amateur 2m band.
Ask them if it is on all channels or a specific channel. I bet you it is
channel 18.
As far as rectifying this problem, I have no idea, but if it is what
I think it is, it's really up to the cable provider I would think.

Just a quick suggestion/question:
Do you interfere with your own TV? If you also use cable with your
TV with no problem, then that supports your suspicion that they have
cable leakage. How good is there cable reception? If it is noisy
(snowy or distorted) when you are not transmitting it may point to
bad connections for your neighbor's TV.
If you are on good enough terms with your neighbor ask to see the
problem (have someone key your radio)? Getting a look at his setup
can often reveal where his problem lies. Offer free help.

Get some ferrite donuts and wind the speaker leads thru them a couple
times. You may have to use ferrite chokes on the power lead to the
speaker, also. The real expensive solution is to buy RFI immune
computer speakers from MFJ. On your wife's computer speakers solder
a disc ceramic capacitor across the leads menioned, above (probably
.001 mfd, rated for 500v or 1kv). For HF RFI one could use .01 mfd.
I think Radio Shack is carrying some clamp-on ferrite beads that
might go on easy. If you notice these are now standard on the VGA
leads to computer monitors! The Computer folks are beginning to learn.
This works for stereo RFI as well.

Very common problem. You didn't give us many details, so I'm gonna
guess this is the old channel 18 problem.
You also didn't say whether the neighbor tunes to this channel using
the TV or a cable box or what.
Cable TV channel 18 is at 145.25 MHz. Loose connections in the cable
system (probably on or in your neighbor's house) are the most likely
cause. The technical name of this problem is "cable ingress".
Cable company near me used to have disney channel on 18, and ingress
from ham signals caused lots of complaints. They changed the lineup
to put something less widely viewed on 18 to fix the problem.
Call the cable TV company and ask for help with a cable ingress
problem. Its their problem.

This coming Sunday, April 27th, AMSAT will have its premiere at a major
sports car race -- The Bosch Engineering 250 at the Virginia
International Raceway (VIR) Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series; VIR is
located near Danville, VA on the VA/NC border.
Brad Jaeger (see http://www.bradjaeger.com) is the son of AMSAT member
Jim Jaeger (K8RQ) and is piloting the bright yellow #77 Doran Racing
Kodak Ford machine (which you can see at
http://www.bradjaeger.com/?q=node/110 and at
http://www.grand-am.com/rolex/drivers/driver.cfm?did=1110).
K8RQ has arranged for AMSAT to display its colors on Brad's car on a
"space available" basis. If you can make it to Danville for the weekend,
the detailed schedule of events can be found at
http://www.grand-am.com/assets/08VIROfficialSched2.pdf. But if you can't

Hi to the BB,
I was able to locally test the Delfi-C3 RASCAL software using the 5MB
telemetry sound file from the Delfi-C3 website using my computer with the
following method.
Set your computer Sound Recording Device Properties using the following
path. I am using Windows XP Home Edition.
Control Panel ---- Sounds and Audio Devices ---- Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties ---- Click on Audio tab ---- Click on Sound Recording Volume
tab ---- Select Mono Mix on Sound Recorder Properties ---- Set the
recording volume level to half way on the scale. Now make sure you have a
check mark in the Sound Recorder select box.
Download the 5MB WAV file onto your desktop from the following link in the
Delfi-C3 website:
http://www.delfic3.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=115
Open the computer Sound Recorder program ( All Programs ----
Accessories ---- Entertainment ---- Sound Recorder ) or use the Windows
Media Player. Play back the telemetry sound file you downloaded.
Open the Delfi-C3 RASCAL software. Now you should see the software screen
decoding the playback telemetry sound file. You can set the audio level by
adjusting the computer Sound Recorder Volume level setting.
