Hi all,
FO-29 seems to be OFF ?
There are reports on http://oscar.dcarr.org
to indicate that.
During a pass with AOS at 1910 UTC here in Copenhagen
with a max. elevation of 30 degrees, I heard no signals
from FO-29.
There was some noise at 435.850 MHz (corrected for doppler shift)
in the start of the pass - but that was all ?
It may be something local.

I did check 435.910 MHz as well - and no signal.

Has anyone heard anything ?

During the recent week of V/S? I got caught changing my mobile station
configuration and had to make more changes for V/S This occurred during one of
our more nasty heat and humidity cycles.? Working outside, even in the shade
was difficult.? On the last possible day, I finally did hear a brief period of
S band.? Now I know what I have to do for next time.

As I recall it, one of the criteria for the AO-40 was to provide several
different modes to stretch? the experience and capabilities of Hams.? Many
Hams complained that they had to buy extra equipment, but many? found sources
of commercial equipment that could be modified and sold at reasonable prices.?
The current satellite building criteria seems to be that if you can not work
the satellite with an HT and a hand held antenna we do not attempt it.

As a compromise, how about one week a month AO-51 is in VS and another it is
in LS?? This is a technical hobby, let us prove we can handle the challenge.

Now?everything seems run.

Oggetto: RE: [amsat-bb] Re: lvb tracker circuit -- xtal?

Hi Stefano.

Yes, as others have stated, you need a 4MHz crystal for the serial port bit
rate to be correct.

Please also use the latest .HEX file (0.9) located here:
http://www.g6lvb.com/Articles/LVBTracker/LVBTrack.hex

When programming, you should use the PICPROG.EXE v0.2 program
http://www.g6lvb.com/Articles/LVBTracker/PicProg.exe with the PIC in situ on
the board using a hardware (not USB virtual) serial port.

If, for some reason, you choose not to use PICPROG.EXE, you can use MPLAB
instead with a compatible programmer. Configure->Select Device as 16F876 or
16F876A device as appropriate, File->Import the hex file, and set
Configure->Configuration bits like this:

??? // Default config bits...
??? // Osc=XT, WDT off, PUT on, BOD off, LVP off, FPW on, DBG off, data
EE prot off, CodeProt off
??? au16Data[0x2007]=0x3F31;

Check first with a 'scope that the crystal is oscillating. If it's not,
check the power on the chip. See if the reset button switches the the
oscillator off and on.

Also please check the 9 pin D type on the PCB itself is a socket, NOT a
plug! Even if you use a gender changer, it will not change the fact that if
you solder a plug and not a socket to the board, the pins 1,2,3,4,5 will end
up being 5,4,3,2,1 so your tracker will not work.

There is no echo from the LVB Tracker, emulating the exect function of a
real GS-232A. Hitting Enter (<CR> for us oldies) from a terminal emulator
should return a prompt though.

Regarding the LCD, do you get a top row of slightly dark blocks? Try
checking the contrast adjustment.

73, Howard G6LVB

Thanks to all for comments.

This evening I 'll try to re-flash PIC with the correct fuses, and try with
the 3,5...MHz XTAL I have, to obtain?at least LCD on.

The external flashing introduces another variable, right.

Ciao, Stefano.

Nope, for the second time that you have now tried to twist this
into your own self serving view of selfishness, I say again,
read my words.

I said BELIEVE in. That has nothing to do with selfish self
interest as you keep trying to twist it. You and I support the
boy scouts and volunteer there because we BELIEVE in the value
of the task.

Im finished with this thread. You're wasting everyone's time.

And (for those who know Wash.DC) please pass on my thanks to NW3DC for their
W3A certificate, celebrating the inauguration of the 44th US President, all

Bob. I am not twisting any words

If the people believed in the amateur radio satellite service, they would
build products that serve the interest of that group.

If they build something else, they are doing it for other reasons.

Jerry I dont think you stepped into anything.

Look two points

First it would be easy to deflect the questions I (and others) have raised
about suitsat or suitsat 2 by simply answering the questions. Someone must
know what the total cost on suitsat 1 were, someone must have (I assume) run a
failure analysis and figured otu what went wrong (or what the candidates
were)...

But when the answers turn out to be "well if you wanted to be productive you
wouldnt ask these questions" then sorry 3 decades of volunteering,
professional aviation/aerospace, and raising kids tell me that there are no
good answers.

Amsat is declining as an organization, some of it is how times change and
other parts of it is that the BOD and others are not adapting to the changing
times (or are in it to serve themselves).

second and just as an aside. I really dont care much for "the silent
majority". It was J. Bartlett delegate from NH who when signing the DOI said
"Decisions are made by those who show up". The silent majority is generally
the most useless group of people ie they wont make their voices heard and are
just like cows.

It was "the silent majority" who allowed Columbia to go up in a ball of flame,
people who would, in the halls voice a lot of concern but when it came time to
tell the powers that be, who had already said "things were fine"...well they
were the silent majority.

One of the proudest moments in my life was when my father in law, a retired
Navy Four star stood up and said going to Iraq was the dumbest thing he had
ever heard of. That was pre boots on the ground. He was pilloried but in the
end, he was correct.

Take care and thanks for your thoughts

Robert WB5MZO

Robert, please, keep in mind that everyone working on building
spacecraft is a volunteer. Nobody is paid to build a particular
project, nor can they be expected to do so. Therefore, to some
extent, he who does the work makes the rules.

At the same time, planners and buildings know full well that, without
substantial Member support, projects won't be funded.

In the end, the best current interests of the Members and creative
visions are weighed carefully by our elected Directors. The outcome,
of necessity, includes many reasonable possibilities, with which
reasonable people will agree and disagree. (I've seen the process
first hand.)

Rather than engage in further dialog on BB, I suggest joining in the
process by voting for your choice of Directors, coming to Board
meetings, writing articles for the Journal with specific ideas, and
following whatever other constructive paths come to mind to help the
AMSAT mission succeed.

Don't criticize. PARTICIPATE!

I hope this helps.

Tonight I turned on the SQRX receiver and the 1268.700 BBS uplink, and
lowered the power on the 435.300 transmitter to compensate for the extra
power the receiver uses. Currently 435.150 is at 400mw, and 435.300 is at
700mw. Together the transmitters are drawing 1.06 amps continuously.

I've seen the comments about running the S downlink for a week every month.
Thanks for the input, and please remember to send those suggestions to the
ao51-modes@xxxxx.xxx address as well. In the past we have tried to run at
least a week per month of S downlink, except when circumstances demanded
otherwise. Over the next 9 months we will be trying several new things,
sometimes on short notice. Please keep an eye on the AO-51 webpage at
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/echo/CTNews.php, ANS news bulletins, posts to
AMSAT-BB, and AMSAT on Twitter for updates and information.

I suspect in the end that this is the main problem with AMSAT and probably the
organization will continue a decline until it is fixed.

I've been on a number of volunteer efforts which I define as ones you dont get
paid for...including being President of the largest community association in
Texas and being President of the School board of the premier school district
(or at least one of them) in Houston Texas (it includes the NASA facility in
Houston)...those last two I had to work to get elected to and in both cases
was responsible for a budget several times larger then Amsat which was all
"taxpayer money" and in the case of the later, had far more consequences then
Amsat board members can even pretend to imagine.

So I have a pretty good idea of what "volunterism" on a corporate level means.
And it doesn't mean that the person who does the work makes the rules. It
means that the person who does the work out of a volunteer spirit, as long as
they are spending "member" dollars and doing things in the name of the
organization do those things solely for the benefit of the organization.

It means being responsible, even if you dont like some of them, the membership
of the organization. The BOD has no real comprehension of that concept and
that is the foundation of the reason that the numbers in AMSAT are not growing
and the amateur satellite "community" isnt all that much either. The
questions about Suitsat that I asked were legitimate ones and I got not a
single legitimate answer from any member of the BOD... I would imagine that
they cannot answer the questions because it explains why the odds are very
high that Suitsat 2 or whatever it is now called, is a wild goose chase.

As my late wife use to tell me when people would come up to us at the
cafeteria on a sunday or even when we were "out on a date" at the movies and
ask me some question about how the school district was running "if you didnt
want to answer the questions you should not have worked so darn hard to get
elected".

I know the answer is "vote the bums out" and I certainly try every chance I
get. Before election time I was curious and that is why I raised the issues I
did... Dont worry, except for getting myself (and to some extent the
current congressman from District 22) elected most of the people who I vote
for dont....as an example the last three guys I voted for President for are
doing something else...

but as we use to say in my last "assignment", "I love the work"

take care and thanks for your words
